Definitions
- the invention relates to a mug. Background of the invention
- a separate mixing means is used, such as a teaspoon or, in the case of disposable cups, sometimes also e.g. a wooden stick.
- a drawback in this conventional way of stirring the beverage is that both hands are always needed for doing it when the mug is held in hand. How- ever, there are situations in which one hand is needed for something else than holding the mug or stirring the beverage in it simultaneously when drinking from the mug or holding the mug in hand.
- a need for keeping one hand free during drinking the beverage in the mug or holding the mug in hand occurs, for example, when driving a car or when holding another object or piece relating to drinking the beverage, such as another dish (e.g. a saucer) or a foodstuff (e.g. a slice of bread, bun, cookie, etc.).
- mugs and other drinking cups are also known, which are equipped with some kind of a stirring means which can be used simultane- ously with the same hand in which the mug or beverage cup is held.
- a mug, in which the beverage can be stirred simultaneously by the same hand, in which the mug is held, is disclosed in e.g. US 6,471 ,390 B1 .
- the mug is equipped with a handle with a pump operable by a finger to produce pressurized air which is introduced in the mug. This causes currents in the liquid contained in the mug, stirring the beverage.
- the device is relatively complex, and its implementation requires that the mug or at least the handle connected to it is made of a sufficiently rigid material. Therefore, such a device would be difficult to implement in e.g. a disposable cup that is normally made of a thin and soft material.
- the aim of the invention is to introduce a novel mug which is simpler than before and in which the beverage can be simultaneously stirred by the same hand, in which the mug is held.
- the mug according to the invention is provided with a stirring wing for stirring the liquid (beverage) contained in the mug, the stirring motion being generated by pressing the wall of the mug or a pressing point in the wall, configured to be flexible or otherwise movable, so that the wall or said flexible/movable point of the mug is placed in such a way with respect to the stirring wing inside the mug that the insertion of the wall or the pressing point in the direction of the inside of the mug and back outwards again will cause the necessary movement of the stirring wing.
- the mug according to the invention is characterized by what will be presented in the independent claim 1 .
- Dependent claims 2 to 7 will present some advantageous embodiments of the mug according to the invention.
- the advantage of the mug according to the invention is that the mug, which can be held and stirred simultaneously by one and the same hand, can have a very simple structure and be made at low manufacturing costs.
- the mug according to the invention also has e.g. the advantage that the mug can well be made of paper, paperboard or thin plastic; in other words, the mug according to the invention can also be easily implemented as a disposable mug.
- the stirring means can consist of more than one stirring wing, each moving simultaneously when the pressing point placed in the side wall of the mug is pressed.
- the stirring wings can be placed at any point inside the cup, between its bottom and opening. With several stirring wings, the beverage in the mug can be stirred more thoroughly in a shorter time, because the stirring is more efficient when stirring wings can be placed in different points in the inner space of the mug.
- the mug can also comprise a separate lid equipped with the stirring means. In such a solution, the bottom and the side wall of the mug can be implemented in a conventional way, because the stirring means is placed in the separate lid.
- the mug according to the invention is provided with a patterned inner surface which enhances the stirring of the beverage by the stirring means.
- Fig. 1 shows a mug according to the invention seen in a slanted view from above
- Fig. 2 shows the inside of the mug according to Fig. 1 seen directly from above
- Fig. 3 shows the mug according to the preceding figures seen in a side view from the direction of the pressing point
- Fig. 4 shows the mug directly from above when pressing the pressing point in the side wall of the mug.
- FIGS 1 to 4 show a mug 1 according to the invention.
- the mug 1 has a circular cross-section; in other words, it comprises a cylindrical side wall 2 and a bottom 3 connected to the lower edge of the side wall.
- the mug 1 is a disposable mug whose side wall 2 and bottom 3 are made of waterproofed paper or paperboard and connected to each other so that the joint between the side wall 2 and the bottom 3 is also liquidproof.
- the surfacing of the materials e.g. wax or plastic film
- the beverage to be held in the mug can be hot, i.e. its temperature can be close to the boiling point of water at normal pressure (100°C).
- the mug 1 can be used as e.g. a coffee or tea cup, or for example as a vessel for drinking hot fruit drinks or soup.
- a stirring means is provided inside the side wall 2, being e.g.
- this stirring wing 4 is a rectangular, sheet-like piece of paper, paperboard or plastic, having a curvature that approximately corresponds to the radius of curvature of the mug 1 .
- a pressing point 5 is marked on the outer surface of the mug, spaced from the fastening point in the direction of the free end of the stirring wing 4.
- the stirring wing 4 inside the side wall is turned from the side wall of the mug 1 in the direction of the vertical central line X of the mug 1 , as shown in Fig. 4. Because the stirring wing 4 is fas- tened to the side wall 2 to be parallel with it, and the material of the stirring wing is suitably rigid but also sufficiently flexible, it will return to its position substantially against the side surface of the side wall 2 of the mug when the pressing of the pressing point is discontinued. In this way, the stirring wing 4 inside the mug 1 can be moved back and forth like a pendulum by pressing the pressing point 5 in the side wall 2 of the mug (i.e. by pressing and discontinuing the pressing).
- the fastening of the stirring wing 4 is implemented and the properties of the material are selected so that the stirring wing 4 also maintains its reversibility when there is cold or hot liquid in the mug.
- the mug 1 holds a beverage to be drunk from the mug 1
- the horizontal pen- dulum motion of the stirring wing 4 generated in said way will stir the beverage in the mug 1 , because the motion of the stirring wing 4 will cause currents and turbulence in the beverage inside the mug.
- the mug shown in Fig. 1 enables the simultaneous stirring of the beverage contained in the mug by the same hand in which the mug is held.
- the pressing point 5 is normally placed relatively close to the fastening point 6 of the stirring wing 4.
- the stirring wing 4 can extend several times the distance between the fastening point 7 of the stirring wing 4 and the pressing point beyond the pressing point 5, down to the free end 8 of the stirring wing.
- a relatively small pressing of the pressing point can generate a relatively large movement of the free end of the stirring wing and thereby also efficient stirring of the beverage.
- the length of the stirring wing 4 can be advantageously at least three times the distance between the centre of the pressing point 5 and the centre of the fastening point 7 of the stirring wing.
- the fastening point 7 can be, for example, an area of a given size in the stirring wing 4, at which the stirring wing is glued by a suitable heat and moisture resistant adhesive or, for example, a heat sealable plastic layer, to the inner surface of the side wall 2.
- the edge (terminal point) of the fastening point in this embodiment is marked by a broken line in Figs. 2 and 4.
- the stirring wing 4 is rigid in its cross-direction, that is, in the height direction of the mug 1 , because the curvature makes it a profiled piece. Owing to this, the lower and upper edges of the stirring wing 4 are not easily bent even if the pressing point 5 were only in the centre of the stirring wing, or even at its upper or lower edge.
- the curved shape of the stirring wing 4 also enhances the turbulence of the liquid contained in the mug 1 and makes the stirring wing 4 unnoticeable when it is not used, because it is always placed against the side wall 2 of the mug, conforming to its shape when the pressing point 5 is not being pressed.
- the mug according to the invention can be implemented in a variety of ways deviating from the example embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4.
- the mug according to the invention can have the shape of a typical (conical) coffee mug, that is, having a diameter slightly smaller at the bottom than at the upper edge, or comprising a side wall having a straight cylindrical, curved or another shape changing in the vertical direction.
- the mug does not necessarily have to have a circular horizontal cross-section, but it can have e.g. an oval, square, rectan- gular, or other polygonal shape.
- the material of the mug can be plastic, metal, ceramics, porcellaine, glass, or the above-mentioned materials for disposable cups.
- the pressing point is formed of a suitable soft material (e.g. rubber, silicon rubber, neoprene rubber, soft and flexible plastic, or the like), or it is made of a separate rigid piece tightly and movably fitted to the wall of the mug.
- the wall of the mug with the rigid wall can be provided with an opening, to which a separate piece forming the pressing point is fastened or fitted by a liquidproof joint.
- the pressing point of the mug with a rigid wall can be provided by reducing the thickness of the wall and/or by locally modifying the flexibility properties of the material.
- the number, the shape and the material of the stirring wings, as well as the way of fastening them to a wall of the mug can vary in different embodiments of the mug according to the invention.
- the stirring wing could also be integrated in the mug or its wall.
- the stirring wing can have e.g. a spoon-like shape so that only a thin but sufficiently stiff arm is placed at the pressing point, and the end of the arm is a "blade" with a circular or other shape and may be placed in a slanted position with respect to the arm, to enhance the generation of a current and turbulence, and for directing them in a desired direction.
- the mug can be provided with intermediate means between the stirring wing(s) and the pressing point so that when the same pressing point is pressed, all the stirring wings inside the mug will move simultaneously.
- two or more pressing points can be provided as well, each moving at least one stirring wing.
- one or more stirring wings can be placed or formed in e.g. a separate lid to be fastened to the mug, instead of the side wall of the mug.
- the stirring wing can be a straight or curved sheet piece implemented in the same way as the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 4, or e.g.
- the mug according to the invention can comprise other structural solutions affecting the stirring of the beverage in the mug.
- the side wall and/or the bottom of the mug is provided with a cor- rugation or a pattern which enhances the stirring of the liquid contained in the mug when one or more stirring means provided in the mug are being applied.
- the mug according to the invention is not limited to the above presented example embodiment but it can be implemented in a number of different ways within the scope of the appended claims.
