- a drive element which is designed for example as a joint bell.
- About the wheel bearing of the axle pin is still connected to the wheel of the chassis.
- the axle journal itself and its connection to the wheel carrier are directly exposed to the loads introduced via the wheel during driving. Therefore, it is necessary that the journal is designed reliably and manufactured with a high quality.
- steel, such as Cf 53 used as a material for the journal, which is made in particular by hot forming (drop forging) over several forming stages and then post-machined.
- Axles which are also referred to as wheel hub or Radlagerflansch are known in various designs.
- a self-centering serration is provided in a joint between the drive element and the journal.
- This toothing can be introduced into the housing of the drive element and a front side of the axle journal by means of various production methods, such as gear cutting, gear cutting or toothing embossing. These methods are introduced in an uncured or a soft tissue, with a subsequent hardening can lead to distortion. In contrast, a hard fine machining of the Hirth toothing causes high costs. If the serration is already introduced into the axle journal blank during forging, then the clamping tools must be disadvantageously tensioned in the toothing in all further machining steps, in order to ensure a running for toothing.

- a method for producing the journal which involves an exciting machining of a hardened or soft blank provides for the creation of the axle journal.
- all quality-relevant dimensions for the wheel flange, the bearing seat for the wheel bearing on the shaft section and a central opening in the shaft section can be produced by means of clamping by machining at the end of the production chain.
- the machining according to the invention also extends to the central opening of the shaft section, which is formed as a plane cone polygon.
- the invention advantageously provides a process-reliable, simplified time-optimized and thus cost-effective method.
- the inner plane cone polygon replaces a Hirth toothing hitherto mounted on the end face of the shaft section of the axle journal, which in the installed state of the axle journal positively engages in a corresponding toothing on a drive element.
- the plane cone polygon advantageously allows self-alignment and centering due to a low inclination at the junction. Furthermore, a desired freedom of play arises between the inner cone polygon of the axle journal and an outer plane cone polygon connected to the drive element after completed assembly.
