Definitions
- the invention relates to elongated fastening elements that are substantially flexible in at least the transverse direction, and in particular to locking elements of such fastening elements.
- Fastening means such as the so-called cable ties, which are substantially flexible in at least the transverse direction are commonly used to tie various kind of structural elements together. They are most commonly used to tie different kind of wire, conductor wire, hose, and cable bundles in various types of installation work, in electrical installations, in particular.
- cable ties By means of cable ties, it is possible to form a loop which is of exactly the appropriate size and which can be tightened around a bundle to be tied as tightly as needed.
- the elongated fastening part at the free end of a cable tie comprises, at least on a section of its length, a toothing into which a protrusion at the locking end is pushed so that the tightened loop is no longer able to open or to become loose, but only allows tightening.
- pin-like or rivet-like fastening means which possibly also comprise toothing or similar structures to lock a fastening.
- the disadvantage of these solutions is the weakness of their tensile strength and/or difficulty to affect the degree of the compression force at the joint.
- to use them usually requires making a hole in the parts to be joined, which requires extremely precise tolerances and alignments, which is not necessarily always possible in the case of, for example, electric cables and line hoses or linepipes.
- the object of the solution is therefore to develop a new kind of locking element for fastening elements.
- the object of the invention is achieved by a locking element which is characterized by what is stated in the independent claim.
- Preferred embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the dependent claims.
- the invention is based on that the locking element comprises a locking part and a wedge part to lock the fastening element in place in relation to the locking element.
- the locking part comprises, when pressed against the toothing of the fastening element, a counter-toothing that forms a form lock, the counter-toothing preventing the fastening element from sliding in its substantially longitudinal direction in relation to the locking element.

- Figure 5 is a schematic cross sectional view of yet another locking element and its detail in a position where the body parts of the locking element are coupled against each other.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a locking element in perspective.
- This kind of a locking element may be used to lock such a fastening element 7 that comprises an elongated fastening part, substantially flexible in at least the lateral direction, in which toothing has been formed.
- a fastening element 7 may be a cable tie, for example.
- Toothing and counter-toothing in this description refer to any surface structure of a fastening element and/or locking element, which when pressed together form a form lock, which pre- vents the longitudinal moving of the fastening element in at least one direction in relation to the locking element, and which may be re-disconnected and connected without breaking the material by removing the pressing and guiding the toothing and counter-toothing apart.
- the moving of the fastening element is advantageously prevented in relation to the locking element in the direction that substantially corresponds to the longitudinal direction of the fastening element and is opposed to the tightening direction of the fastening element.
- the locking element 1 may in such a case comprise a first body part 2 and a second body part 3.
- the first body part 2 may then comprise, arranged in it, a locking part 4, which may comprise a counter-toothing 6, which may comprise one or more protrusions that are arranged to engage mechanically with the toothing in the lockable fastening element.
- a locking part 4 which may comprise a counter-toothing 6, which may comprise one or more protrusions that are arranged to engage mechanically with the toothing in the lockable fastening element.
- the mechanical engagement of the counter-toothing with the toothing 8 in the fastening element 7 prevents the fastening element 7 from sliding in relation to the locking element in at least one direction, opposite the tightening direction of the fastening element.
- FIG. 3 An embodiment of a counter-toothing and the associated essential toothing surfaces of the toothing in the fastening element, and the mating surfaces of the counter-toothing in the locking element are shown in closed detail in Figure 3 and the description relating to it.
- the locking part 4 is advantageously arranged fixedly in the first body part 2.
- the first body part 2 and the second body part 3 may further comprise means to arrange, such as couple, the first body part and the second body part mechanically against each other in a manner known per se.
- Various kind of mechanisms and joint structures to arrange two parts against each other are known per se and are therefore not described here in any more detail.
- Components or parts to be coupled may comprise mating surfaces, for example, such as engaging bevels that, when pressed together, are locked into each other, as in the embodiment of Figure 2.
- the second body part 3 may comprise, arranged in it, at least one wedge part 5.
- the wedge part When the first and second body parts 2, 3 are coupled against each other, the wedge part may them be arranged to affect the locking part 4 so that the counter-toothing 6 in the locking part 4 is pressed towards a hole 9 and the toothing 8 of the lockable fastening element 7 to be arranged in the hole, allowing the toothings to be locked against each other and the prevention of the moving of the fastening element 7 in relation to the locking element in at least one direction.
- the moving of the fastening element is advan- tageously prevented in relation to the locking element in the direction that substantially corresponds to the longitudinal direction of the fastening element and is opposed to the tightening direction of the fastening element.
- the wedge part 5 may affect the locking part 4 by pushing it in the direction of arrow A shown in Figure 3.
- the direction that substantially corresponds with the direction in which the moving of the fastening element 7 in relation to the locking element 1 is in such a case at least prevented is illustrated by arrow B.
- the wedge part 5 and the locking part 4 advantageously prevent the moving of the fastening element 7 in relation to the locking element 1 also substantially in the tightening direction of the fastening element 7, in other words, in the opposite direction in relation to arrow B in Figure 3, when the first body part 2 and the second body part 3 are coupled against each other.
- the fastening element 7 is locked substantially in place in relation to the locking element 1 as regards all the degrees of freedom when the first body part 2 and the second body part 3 are coupled against each other.

- the wedge part 5 advantageously comprises at least one effective surface 23 affecting the locking part 4 and pushing the locking part 4 towards the fastening element 7 as the body parts 2, 3 of the locking element 1 are moving towards each other as they are being coupled against each other.
- this effective surface 23 may be, for example, inclined or at least arched as to its cross section, and/or the receiving body part may be formed on its inside to push the wedge part 5 towards the fastening element 7 as the body parts 2, 3 of the locking element are approaching each other.
- the locking part 4 is arranged in the first body part 2 substantially in a self-restoring manner so that the locking part 4 substantially restores its initial position as the body parts 2, 3 are released from the position of being coupled against each other.
- the locking element 1 may comprise means to release the fastening element 7 from the locking part 4.
- Such means may comprise, arranged in the locking part 4, for example, a releasing part 24 which, when it is affected, allows the locking part 4 to be moved away from the hole 9 and therefore the fastening element 7 brought through it.
- the fastening element 7 is advantageously available again for a new fastening.
- the releasing part 24 may be positioned so in relation to the hole 9 that it is possible to affect it without dedicated tools, such as with a finger by pushing a nail between the releasing part 24 and the fastening element 7 and pushing the releasing part away from the fastening element.
