NATURAL CHINESE HERBAL COMPOSITION FIELD OF INVENTION
The invention relates to a natural composition for external use on face and body to rejuvenate the skin. In particular, the composition contains a mixture of herbs that can be used for skin whitening, skin tightening, pore refining and alleviating skin problems such as acne, pigmentation and wrinkles for all types of skin.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Chinese herbs are basically plant elements that can be used as major ingredients in a composition for external or internal use owing to their healing properties. Some of the commonly used herbs are Ginseng, wolfberry, Angelica Sinensis, astragalus, atractylodes, bupleurum, licorice, peonym, rhubarb and salvia. There are some prior arts related to the composition of herbs in skin improvement. China Patent No. CN102188358(A) discloses a Chinese medicine cosmetic containing egg white and a preparation method thereof. It is characterized in that the egg white is essentially mixed with Chinese medicine extracts comprising Radix Angelicae, Bletilla Striata and other Chinese medicine extracts as a main ingredient. The Chinese medicine extracts are supercritically extracted and mixed with a certain amount of egg white, followed by homogenisation and centrifugation to obtain an aqueous layer. Nevertheless, the technique imparts chemical into the composition that may essentially cause skin irritation to users. Another China Patent No. CN101590197(A) discloses a pure Chinese medicinal whitening anti-freckle agent comprises Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Tribulus terrestris, Radix Angelicae, Rhizoma Atractylodis and Bighead Atractylodes rhizome. However, the ingredients are soaked in ethanol and extracted prior to usage. Similarly, it involves chemicals in preparation of the composition. Furthermore, it does not possess anti-inflammatory effect that is able to sooth acne problem.
Another China Patent No. CN101756876(A) discloses a freckle removing facial mask comprising Angelica Sinensis, Angelicae Dahuricae, Bletilla Striata and Glycyrrhiza uralensis. However, the facial mask is lack of specific active ingredients which are effective in reducing redness which is caused by acne or eczema.
Another China Patent No. CN102188562(A) discloses a formula of Chinese medicine for removing scars of acnes and the preparation method thereof. The formula comprising Poria Cocos, pearl powder and Angelica Dahurica. Nevertheless, this formula is only limited to lightening of scars caused by acne.
The mask compositions in the market generally comprising mixtures of plant extracts with additives such as emulsifiers and preservatives. These additives may not be suitable for users with sensitive skin. Hence, it is desirable for the industry to invent a mask composition containing only natural ingredients that is suitable for all skin types. On top of skin whitening and. pore refining, a mask composition to alleviate skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation and wrinkles for all types of skin is highly desirable. SUMMARY OF INVENTION
The invention aims to provide a natural composition that is able to rejuvenate the skin.
The invention aims to provide a natural composition for whitening and pore refining.
The invention aims to provide a natural composition that is able to alleviate skin problems such as acne, pigmentation and wrinkles.
The invention also aims to provide a natural composition containing herbs. There is substantially no added chemicals in the composition.
The invention also aims to provide a natural composition that is able to lighten skin pigmentation without causing skin irritation. Another object of the invention is to provide a natural composition for all types of skin.
Another object of the invention is to provide a natural composition for external use. It is essentially used on face and body.
At least one of the preceding objects is met, in whole or in part, by the present invention, in which one of the embodiment of the invention describes a composition to revitalize the skin comprising a mixture of herbs derived from Angelicae sp., Paeoniae sp. , Atractylodis sp. , Bletilla sp. and Wolfiporia sp..
Preferably, the herbs derived/ from Angelicae sp. are Angelicae sinensis, Angelica dahurica or a combination thereof.
In the preferred embodiment, the Angelicae sinensis is present in an amount of 7 to 23 wt% of the composition.
Further in the preferred embodiment, the Angelicae dahurica is present in an amount of 3 to 14 wt% of the composition. In another preferred embodiment, the herbs derived from the Paeoniae sp. are present in an amount of 3 to 13 wt% of the composition.
Preferably, the Atractylodis sp. is present in an amount of 17 to 33 wt% of the composition.
In the preferred embodiment, the herbs derived from the Bletilla sp. are present in an amount of 3 to 20 wt% of the composition.
Further in the preferred embodiment, the herbs derived from the Wolfiporia sp. are present in an amount of 3 to 15 wt% of the composition.
Pursuant to the preferred embodiment, the herbs derived from the Paeoniae sp. is Paeonia lactiflora, Paeonia suffruticosa, Paeonia veitchii or Paeonia obovata. Preferably, the Atractylodis sp. is Atractylodes carlinoides, Atractylodes chinensis, Atractylodes comosa, Atractylodes cuneata, Atractylodes erosodentata, Atractylodes japonica, Atractylodes koreana, Atractylodes ovata, Atractylodes macrocephalae or Atractylodes lancea in the preferred embodiment. Also in the preferred embodiment, the Bletilla sp. is Bletilla striata, Bletilla sinensis or Bletilla ochracae.
Also in the preferred embodiment, the Wolfiporia sp. is Wolfiporia cocos, Wolfiporia extensa or Wolfiporia cartilaginea.
In the preferred embodiment, the composition further comprising herbs derived from Tribulus sp. , Glyzyrrhizae sp. or a combination thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a composition in powder, granule or pellets.
One skilled in the art will readily appreciate that the present invention is well adapted to carry out the objects and obtain the ends and advantages mentioned, as well as those inherent therein. The embodiments described herein are not intended as limitations on the scope of the invention as well as not limited to what are described
herein.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
It is to be understood that the present invention may be embodied in other specific forms and is not limited to the sole embodiment described herein. However modification and equivalents of the disclosed concepts such as those which readily occur to one skilled in the art are intended to be included within the scope of the claims which are appended thereto. The present invention relates to a composition to revitalize the skin comprising a mixture of herbs derived from Angelicae sp., Paeoniae sp., Atractylodis sp., Bletilla sp. and Wolfiporia sp.
The Angelica sp. used is particularly preferred to possess antioxidative, anti- inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities. The herbs derived from Angelicae sp. are Angelicae sinensis, Angelica dahuricae or a combination thereof. Preferably, the Angelicae sinensis is present in an amount of 7 to 23 wt% of the composition. Further, the Angelicae dahurica is present in an amount of 3 to 14 wt% of the composition. In particular, the Angelicae sp. employed can be derived from roots of Angelicae sp. plant.
In the preferred embodiment, the Angelicae sp. employed is able to reduce skin problems caused by pigmentation. Spots and freckles can be lighten through topical application of the composition in the present invention. The Angelica sp. employed are known in the prior arts to be able to attenuate melanin synthesis. There is prior art that discloses the use of ethanol extracts from Angelicae Dahuricae to inhibit melanogenesis that forms pigment on the skin. Besides, another prior art has disclosed the use of hexane and dichloromethane extracts of the Angelicae sinensis to treat hyperpigmentation which causes melanogenesis. Nevertheless, the composition in the present invention is substantially free of chemical in contrast to the prior arts.
Further, the inventor of the present invention found that Angelica sinensis in the composition of the present invention is able to lighten pigmentation or spots without causing toxicity and skin irritation. Common chemical treatment to remove pigments utilises bleaching agents which contains hydroquinone and kojic acid. Improper usage of such bleaching agents may cause abnormal lightening on specific areas of the skin. Moreover, skin irritations including mild itching and stinging may occur during the chemical treatment. The Angelica dahurica employed can also be used in the composition to impart healthy glow on the skin. In the preferred embodiment, the Angelica dahurica in the composition is able to relax tired and irritated skin. Further, it is able to tone all types of skin to achieve a pore refining effect. Another major herbs employed in the composition are derived from roots of Paeoniae sp. plant. The Paeonia sp. is commonly called white peony that refers to the colour of the processed root. Though less common, the herbs derived from flowers and seeds of Paeoniae sp. can also be used. In the preferred embodiment, the herbs derived from the Paeoniae sp. are present in an amount of 3 to 13 wt% of the composition.
Pursuant to the preferred embodiment, the Paeoniae sp. is Paeonia lactiflora, Paeonia suffruticosa, Paeonia veitchii or Paeonia obovata. Preferably, Paeonia lactiflora is employed. In the preferred embodiment, glycosides, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, tannins, terpenoids, triterpenoids and complex polysaccharides can be found in the Paeoniae sp.. Hence, the Paeoniae sp. contains anti- microbial, anti- inflammatory and astringent properties. Paeoniae sp. is preferably used in the composition to reduce redness on the skin caused by acne or eczema. Further, the astringent properties of the Paeoniae sp. can be essentially used for mild coagulation of skin proteins to protect or
strengthen the skin from external stimutii.
Further, minor skin irritations such as those resulting from superficial cuts, allergies, insect bites or f ngal infections can be soothen by topical application of the composition comprising the Paeoniae sp.. In the preferred embodiment, the Paeoniae sp. can be employed for oil balancing on the skin. This renders the composition to be suitable even for oily skin. Further, it also functions in the composition to sooth cracked or chapped skin. Moreover, the composition comprising the Paeoniae sp. can be used for pore refining.
Another herb derived from Atractylodis sp. is employed in the composition. The herbs derived from Atractylodis sp. is present in an amount of 17 to 33 wt% of the composition. The Atractylodes sp. used can be Atractylodes carlinoides, Atractylodes chinensis, Atractylodes comosa, Atractylodes cuneata, Atractylodes erosodentata, Atractylodes japonica, Atractylodes koreana, Atractylodes ovata, Atractylodes macrocephalae or Atractylodes lancea. Preferably, Atractylodes macrocephalae can be utilised. The rhizomes or roots of ' Atractylodis sp. plant can be used. Preferably, the rhizomes are employed. The Atractylodes sp. employed essentially contains essential oil, glucoside and inulin. The Atractylodes sp. can be used to increase significant anti-inflammatory effect in the composition. Further, it can also impart detoxifying or deep cleansing function to the composition. Hence, toxins trapped in the skin that substantially causes pimples, acnes and whiteheads can be removed. Consequently, skin problems associated with acne or eczema can be soothen.
Another herb derived from Bletilla sp. is present in an amount of 3 to 20 wt% of the composition. In particular, the herbs from Bletilla sp. can be derived from tubers of Bletilla sp. plant. The Bletilla sp. can be Bletilla striata, Bletilla sinensis or Bletilla ochracae. Preferably, Bletilla striata is employed.
Bletilla Striata is preferably used in the composition to reduce redness and sooth agitated skin. It is able to facilitate closure of wound on the skin owing to its haemostatic characteristic. Hence, wounds or scars that are caused by outbreak of acnes can be gradually lightened. Nevertheless, cracked or chapped skin caused by dehydration or physical trauma can also be reduced with the presence of Bletilla Striata in the composition.
Another herb derived from Wolfiporia sp. is present in an amount of 3 to 15 wt% of the composition. The Wolfiporia sp. can be Wolfiporia cocos, Wolfiporia extensa, or Wolfiporia cartilaginea. Preferably, Wolfiporia cocos is employed. It is also commonly known as White Poria Cocos. Further, the herb is preferably derived from underground sclerotium of Wolfiporia cocos. The Wolfiporia sp. substantially contains polysaccharides in the sclerotium that can be used in the composition as an antioxidant to delay skin aging. Hence, wrinkles formation can be prevented. Further, the Wolfiporia sp. can also be used in the composition to sooth acne problems owing to its anti-inflammatory properties. The composition further comprising herbs derived from Tribulus sp. , Glyzyrrhizae sp. or a combination thereof.
In the preferred embodiment, the composition comprises 12 to 28 wt% of Tribulus sp.. The Tribulus sp. used in the present invention can be Tribulus cistoides, Tribulus longipetalus, Tribulus terrestris or Tribulus zeyheri. Preferably, Tribulus terrestris is employed. Fruits, leaves or roots of Tribulus sp. can be used in the composition. Preferably, the fruits of Tribulus sp. plant are used.
Acne are essentially caused by blockage of follicles by excessive sebum that promotes growth of bacteria in skin pores. The Tribulus sp. used possesses anti- bacterial, anti-
viral and anti-fungal activity due to the presence of steroid saponins. Hence, the composition comprises Tribulus sp. can be used to alleviate acne problem upon topical application. In the preferred embodiment, the composition comprises 1 to 8 wt% of Glyzyrrhizae sp.. The Glyzyrrhizae sp. used can be dried peeled roots of Glycyrrhiza sp. plants. Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Glycyrrhiza acanthocarpa, Glyzyrrhizae echinata or Glyzyrrhizae lepidota can be used in the preferred embodiment. However, Glycyrrhiza uralensis is particularly employed.
The Glyzyrrhizae sp. used comprises bioactive compounds such as glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid and other derivatives. In the preferred embodiment, the Glycyrrhiza uralensis used comprises 5 to 11 wt% of glycyrrhizin and 3 to 7 wt% of glycyrrhetinic acid. The bioactive compounds can provide anti- inflammatory, anti- bacterial and anti-fungal effects to the skin. Hence, the composition containing the Glyzyrrhizae sp. is able to alleviate acne problems when it is topically applied on the skin. Further, the composition containing the herb is able to inhibit bacterial or fungal activity that essentially stimulates emerges of acne on the skin. Pearl powder is preferably added into the composition for skin whitening purpose. Pearl powder can be obtained by crushing of pearls. In the preferred embodiment, the pearl can be garnered from pearl oysters or freshwater mussels. Chemically, the pearl powders contain layers of aragonite held together by protein conchiolin. In the preferred embodiment, conchiolin in the pearl employed is able to convert into human collagen and combines with skin lipids to form a natural moisture barrier that maintains moisture level of the skin cells. Hence, the pearl powder is able to impart hydration function into skin cells. Further, the pearl powder is able to impart brightness to the skin after topical application of the composition in the preferred embodiment.
In addition, pearl powder is preferably employed to inhibit production of lipofuscin that increases with age. The prefered pearl powder also contains essential antioxidants to counteract with free radicals in the skin. Hence, the composition containing pearl powder is able to reduce epidermal aging and deterioration of skin cells. Preferably, the pearl powder is present in a composition of 1 to 8 wt% of the composition.
All the herbs as described in the preceding description are mixed and pulverized into fine particles. In the preferred embodiment, the composition is prepared in the form of powder, granule or pellets. Preferably, the composition is prepared in powder form.
The composition can be mixed with water to obtain a mixture paste. In another preferred embodiment, the mixture paste can be used to obtain beads, gels or concentrates for easy storage. The mixture paste can be applied over desired part of the skin for an absorption period of 20 to 30 minutes. The mixture paste applied will gradually dried off during the absorption period. A tightening sensation can be perceived during the absorption period. Hence, the composition can be used to minimize pores, to reduce fine lines and to firm the skin.
The composition is suitable for all skin types. In the preferred embodiment, the composition is suitable for normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, sensitive skin and damaged skin. As there are no preservatives added into the composition, the composition is preferably stored in cool and dry place to avoid exposure to moisture. Further, the composition essentially contains no fragrance and colourings. Moreover, the herbs derived from the species described in the preceding description is essentially free of sulphur.
EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE 1
An evaluation process is conducted on the preferred composition to validate its safety for the use by human. The tested composition can be a mask composition comprising 7 to 23 wt% of Angelicae sinensis, 3 to 14 wt% of Angelicae dahuricae, 3 to 13 wt% of Paeoniae Lactiflora, 17 to 33 wt% Atractylodis macrocephalae, 3 to 20 wt% of Bletilla Striata, 12 to 28 wt% of Tribulus terrestris, 3 to 15 wt% of Wolfiporia cocos, 1 to 8 wt% of Glyzyrrhizae uralensis and 1 to 8 wt% of pearl powder of the composition.
The experiment result shows that the composition has a mercury level of less than 0.01 mg/kg according to test method AO AC 971.21, a lead level of less than 0.1 mg/kg according to test method AO AC 972.25, an arsenic level of less than 0.1 mg/kg according to test method 986.15, a cadmium level of less than 0.1 mg/kg according to test method AOAC 973.34, an antimony level of less than 0.1 mg/kg according to test method AOAC 964.16 and a tin level of less than lmg/kg according to test method AOAC 985.16. Hence^ the composition is safe to be used by human. Further, the experimental result shows that the composition essentially contains no preservatives, fragrance and colourings. Therefore, the composition in the present invention is suitable for all skin types.
Claims
1. A composition for revitalizing the skin comprising a mixture of herbs derived bom Angelicae sp., Paeoniae sp., Atractylodis sp., Bletilla sp. and Wolfiporia sp.
2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the herbs derived from Angelicae sp. are Angelicae sinensis, Angelica dahurica or a combination thereof.
3. A composition according to claim 2, wherein the Angelicae sinensis is present in an amount of 7 to 23 wt% of the composition.
4. A composition according to claim 2, wherein the Angelicae dahurica is present in an amount of 3 to 14 wt% of the composition.
5. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the herb derived from the Paeoniae sp. is present in an amount of 3 to 13 wt% of the composition.
6. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the herb derived from Atractylodis sp. is present in an amount of 17 to 33 wt% of the composition.
7. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the herb derived from Bletilla sp. is present in an amount of 3 to 20 wt% of the composition.
8. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the herb derived from Wolfiporia sp. is present in an amount of 3 to 15 wt% of the composition.
9. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the Paeoniae sp. is Paeonia lactifiora, Paeonia suffruticosa, Paeonia veitchii or Paeonia obovata.
10. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the Atractylodis sp. is Atractylodes carlinoides, Atractylodes chinensis, Atractylodes comosa, Atractylodes cuneata, Atractylodes erosodentata, Atractylodes japonica, Atractylodes koreana, Atractylodes ovata, Atractylodes macrocephalae or Atractylodes lancea.
11. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the Bletilla sp. is Bletilla striata, Bletilla sinensis or Bletilla ochracae.
12. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the Wolfiporia sp. is Wolfiporia cocos, Wolfiporia extensa or Wolfiporia cartilaginea.
13. A composition according to claim 1 further comprising herbs derived from Tribulus sp., Glyzyrrhizae sp. or a combination thereof.
14. A composition according to claim 1 which is prepared in the form of powder, granules or pellets.
