Description
本発明は液晶表示装置に関し、特に、1つの画素内に複数のドメインが形成された液晶表示装置に関する。
従来から各種の液晶表示装置が提案されており、特に近年は、視野角の向上、ディスクリネーションの抑制、および焼きつきの低減などに着目した各種の液晶表示装置が提案されている。
たとえば、特開2007-249243号公報には、1つの画素内に複数のドメインが形成されたRTN(Reverse Twisted Nematic)型液晶表示装置が記載されている。
このRTN方式の液晶表示装置は、一対の基板と、1つの画素内に複数形成されたドメインと、各ドメインにおける液晶分子の倒れる方向を規制するドメイン規制手段とを備える。
この特開2007-249243号公報には、ドメイン規制手段として、フィッシュボーン形状の電極が挙げられている。
このようなドメイン規制手段を設けることで、電圧印加時における各ドメインでの液晶分子の傾斜方向を各々異ならせている。このように、各ドメインにおける液晶分子の傾斜方向を異ならせることで、視野角の向上が図られている。
特開2008-197691号公報に記載された液晶表示装置は、1つの画素内に形成されたドメインと、液晶層に接する部分に設けられた垂直配向膜とを備えている。
垂直配向膜には、斜め方向から紫外線(UV:Ultra Violet光)を照射す
ることで配向処理が施されている。そして、紫外線の照射方向を位置によって異ならせることで複数のドメインを形成している。そして、この液晶表示装置は、電圧印加時に、各ドメインの配向規制方位に向けて液晶分子が配向するように突起状の土手を備える。

特開2009-80197号公報に記載された液晶表示装置は、互いに対向する第1基板および第2基板と、第1基板および第2基板の間に設けられた液晶層と、第1基板に設けられた第1電極と、第2基板に設けられた第2電極とを備える。
そして、この液晶表示装置においても、1つの画素内に複数のドメインが形成されており、各ドメインにおいて、第1電極と第2電極との少なくとも一方にスリットが形成されている。このスリットは、液晶分子の配向方位に対して垂直となるように形成されている。
上記のように、電圧の印加時に液晶分子が配向方位が異なる複数のドメインを備えた液晶表示装置においては、各ドメインの境界領域に暗線が生じる。
本発明は、上記のような課題に鑑みてなされたものであって、その目的は、複数のドメインを備えた液晶表示装置において、ドメインの境界領域に生じる暗線の発生が抑制された液晶表示装置を提供することである。
本発明に係る液晶表示装置は、複数の液晶分子を含む液晶層と、液晶層と隣り合うように配置された第1配向膜と、第1配向膜に設けられ、液晶分子を配向する第1配向領域と、第1配向膜に設けられると共に第1配向領域と隣り合うように配置され、液晶分子を配向する第2配向領域とを備える。液晶表示装置は、第1配向膜に対して液晶層と反対側に配置された電極と、電極に設けられ、第1配向領域および第2配向領域の境界線と隣り合う部分と対向すると共に、境界線の延在方向に延びるスリット形成領域とを備える。液晶表示装置は、電極に設けられると共にスリット形成領域と隣り合うように配置され、第1配向領域と対向する平坦面状の第1平坦領域と、電極に設けられると共にスリット形成領域と隣り合うように配置され、第2配向領域と対向する平坦面状の第2平坦領域と、スリット形成領域のうち、第1配向領域と対向する部分に形成され、境界線側から第1平坦領域に向けて延びる複数の第1スリットと、スリット形成領域のうち、第2配向領域と対向する部分に形成され、境界線側から第2平坦領域に向けて延びる複数の第2スリットとを備える。液晶表示装置は、液晶層を挟んで第1配向領域と対向する第3配向領域と、液晶層を挟んで第2配向領域と対向する第4配向領域とを含む第2配向膜とを備える。
上記第1配向領域と第3配向領域とは、液晶分子のうち第1配向領域と第3配向領域との間の中央部に位置する液晶分子を第1ディレクタ方位に向けて配向するように形成される。上記第2配向領域と第4配向領域とは、液晶分子のうち第2配向領域と第4配向領域との間の中央部に位置する液晶分子を、第1ディレクタ方位より方位角度の大きい第2ディレクタ方位に向けて配向するように形成される。上記記第1スリットの延在方向のうち、第1平坦領域側から境界線に向かう方向を第1スリット方位とし、第2スリットの延在方向のうち、境界線から離れる方向を第2スリット方位とする。上記第1スリット方位の方位角度は、第1ディレクタ方位の方位角度以下とされ、第2スリット方位の方位角度は第2ディレクタ方位の方位角度以上とされる。
好ましくは、上記第1スリット方位と第1ディレクタ方位との交差角度は、0°以上であって45°より小さい。好ましくは、上記第2スリット方位と第2ディレクタ方位との交差角度は、0°以上であって45°より小さい。
好ましくは、上記第1スリット方位と第1ディレクタ方位との交差角度は、0°以上30°以下とされ、上記第2スリット方位と第2ディレクタ方位との交差角度は、0°以上30°以下とされる。
好ましくは、上記第1スリットと第2スリットとは、境界線をはさんで互いに間隔をあけて形成される。
好ましくは、上記電極は、画素電極である。好ましくは、上記電極は、対向電極である。好ましくは、上記第1配向領域の配向規制方位と、第3配向領域の配向規制方位とは互い交差する。上記第2配向領域の配向規制方位と、第4配向領域の配向規制方位とが互いに交差する。
本発明に係る液晶表示装置によれば、ドメインの境界領域に生じる暗線の低減を図ることができる。
図1から図25を用いて、本実施の形態1に係る液晶表示装置について説明する。

テレビジョン受信機1は、液晶表示装置2と、液晶表示装置2を収容する筐体3と、液晶表示装置2の駆動を制御する制御部4とを備える。
筐体3は、液晶表示装置2の前面側に配置される前面パネル5と、液晶表示装置2の背面側に配置される背面ケース6と、背面ケース6を支持する台7とを含む。前面パネル5には、液晶表示装置2の画面を外部に露出させる窓部8が形成されており、前面パネル5は枠状に形成されている。
図2は、液晶表示装置2を模式的に示す斜視図である。この図2に示すように、液晶表示装置2は、板状に形成された液晶表示パネル10と、液晶表示パネル10の一方の主表面に設けられた偏光板11と、液晶表示パネル10の他方の主表面に設けられた偏光板12と、液晶表示パネル10に向けて光を照射するバックライトユニット13とを含む。
偏光板11が通過する光の振動方向と偏光板12が通過する光の振動方向とが互いに直交するように、偏光板11および偏光板12が配置されている。バックライトユニット13は、たとえば、複数のLEDを有する光源などを備える。
液晶表示パネル10は、バックライトユニット13側に配置されたアクティブマトリクス基板20と、アクティブマトリクス基板20上に配置された対向基板21とを含む。
図3は、アクティブマトリクス基板20に形成された回路を模式的に示す平面図である。この図3に示すように、アクティブマトリクス基板20は、透明基板22と、この透明基板22の主表面上にアレイ状に形成された複数のスイッチング素子23と、スイッチング素子23のゲート電極に接続されたゲート配線24と、スイッチング素子23のソース電極に接続されたソース配線25と、スイッチング素子23のドレイン電極に接続された画素電極26とを備える。なお、本実施の形態1では、本願発明を液晶表示装置に適用した例について説明しているため、透明基板22は、ガラス基板などの透明基板が採用されている。
スイッチング素子23は、ゲート電極30と、ソース電極31と、ドレイン電極32とを備え、スイッチング素子23としては、たとえば、MIM(metal-insulator-metal)ダイオードや薄膜トランジスタ(TFT)などのスイッチング素子が採用される。
ゲート配線24は、第1方向に長尺に形成され、第1方向と直交する第2方向に間隔をあけて複数形成されている。ゲート配線24の一方の端部には、ゲート端子部27が設けられている。
ソース配線25は、第2方向に長尺に形成されており、第1方向に間隔をあけて複数形成されている。ソース配線25の一方の端部にはソース端子部28が設けられている。
ゲート端子部27は、透明基板22の一側辺部に沿って配列しており、ソース端子部28は、透明基板22の一長辺部に沿って配列している。
図4は、スイッチング素子23を含む液晶表示パネル10の断面図である。この図4に示すように、液晶表示パネル10は、アクティブマトリクス基板20と、アクティブマトリクス基板20から間隔をあけて設けられた対向基板21と、アクティブマトリクス基板20および対向基板21の間に設けられ、表示媒体層としての液晶層29と、アクティブマトリクス基板20の上面に設けられた配向膜39と、対向基板21の主表面のうち、アクティブマトリクス基板20と対向する主表面に設けられた配向膜38と、透明基板22に設けられた偏光板14と、透明基板33に設けられた偏光板15とを備える。なお、バックライトユニット13は、アクティブマトリクス基板20に向けて光を照射する。
対向基板21は、ガラス基板などの透明基板33と、透明基板33の主表面に設けられたカラーフィルタ34と、カラーフィルタ34よりもアクティブマトリクス基板20側に設けられた共有電極35と、共有電極35よりも、アクティブマトリクス基板20側に配置された配向膜38とを備える。
配向膜38は、液晶層29と接触しており、共有電極35は、配向膜38に対して液晶層29と反対側に位置している。配向膜38は、光感光基を有する有機材料から形成されている。配向膜38には、紫外線による光配向処理が施されており、配向膜38の液晶層29側の表面には、ピコオーダの微細突起が複数形成されている。具体的には、配向膜を形成する配向膜高分子の主鎖が基板表面に配置され、側鎖が略垂直方向に立つように形成されている。
アクティブマトリクス基板20は、透明基板22の主表面上に設けられたスイッチング素子23と、このスイッチング素子23を覆うように設けられた層間絶縁膜50と、層間絶縁膜50の上面上に形成された画素電極26と、この画素電極26上に形成された配向膜39とを備える。層間絶縁膜50は、パッシベーション膜51と、パッシベーション膜51上に形成された平坦化膜52とを含む。パッシベーション膜51は、たとえば、シリコン窒化膜などの無機絶縁膜から形成されており、平坦化膜52は、たとえば、アクリル樹脂などの有機絶縁膜などから形成されている。
スイッチング素子23は、透明基板22の主表面上に形成されたゲート電極30と、このゲート電極30を覆うように透明基板22の主表面上に形成されたゲート絶縁膜36と、ゲート電極30の上方に位置するゲート絶縁膜36の上面に形成された半導体層37とを含む。スイッチング素子23は、半導体層37上に形成されたソース電極31と、ソース電極31と間隔をあけて設けられたドレイン電極32とを含む。
ゲート電極30は、下層金属膜43と、この下層金属膜43の上面上に形成された上層金属膜44とを含む積層金属膜から形成されている。同様に、ソース電極31およびドレイン電極32も、ゲート電極30と同じ下層金属膜43および上層金属膜44を含む積層金属膜から形成されている。
上層金属膜44と下層金属膜43としては、たとえば、上層金属膜44としてCu(銅)を採用し、下層金属膜43としてTi(チタン)を採用することができる。
半導体層37は、アモルファスシリコン膜45と、このアモルファスシリコン膜45上に形成されたn+アモルファスシリコン膜46とを含む。
ソース電極31は、下層金属膜43と、下層金属膜43上に形成された上層金属膜44とを含む。ドレイン電極32は、下層金属膜43と、この下層金属膜43上に形成された上層金属膜44とを含む。
層間絶縁膜50には、ドレイン電極32の上面に達するように形成されたコンタクトホール53と、このコンタクトホール53を通って画素電極26がドレイン電極32に接続されている。画素電極26は、たとえば、ITO膜やIZO膜のような透明導電膜から形成されている。なお、この画素電極26にはスリットが形成されているが、その詳細については後述する。配向膜39は、画素電極26を覆うように、層間絶縁膜50上に形成されている。
偏光板14は、透明基板22の2つ主表面のうち、スイッチング素子23が設けられた主表面と反対側に位置する主表面に設けられている。
偏光板15は、透明基板33の2つ主表面のうち、カラーフィルタ34が形成された主表面と反対側に配置されている。偏光板14の吸収軸と偏光板15の吸収軸とは、互いに直交するように配置されている。
配向膜39は、液晶層29と隣り合うように配置されており、画素電極26は、配向膜39に対して液晶層29と反対側に配置されている。
配向膜39は、光感光基を有する有機材料から形成されている。配向膜39には、紫外線によって光配向処理が施されており、液晶層29と接触する配向膜39の表面には、ピコオーダの微細突起が複数形成されている。具体的には、配向膜を形成する配向膜高分子の主鎖が基板表面に配置され、側鎖が略垂直方向に立つように形成されている。液晶層29は複数の液晶分子を含む。
図5は、画素電極26と、配向膜38の一部および配向膜39の一部を示す斜視図である。この図5において、Z軸方向は、観察者が画面を垂直に観察したときの観察方向である。
配向膜38は、複数の配向領域60~63を含む。配向領域60と配向領域61とは、X軸線方向に隣り合い、配向領域63と配向領域62とはX軸線方向に隣り合うように配置されている。なお、配向領域60と配向領域63とは、Y軸線方向に隣り合うように配置され、配向領域61と配向領域62とは、Y軸線方向に隣り合うように配置されている。
なお、配向領域60~63には、液晶層29内の液晶分子を所定の方向に配向するように光配向処理が施されており、配向領域60,61,62,63の配向方位は、各々配向方位(配向規制方位)D0,D1,D2,D3とされている。ここで、各配向方位D0,D1,D2,D3は、配向領域60,61,62,63に形成から突出する側鎖によって規定されている。具体的には、配向領域60から突出する側鎖は、配向領域60から配向領域64に向うにつれて、配向方位D0に向うように傾斜している。同様に、配向領域61に形成された側鎖は、配向領域61から配向領域65に向うにつれて、配向方位D1に向うように傾斜している。さらに、配向領域62,63に形成された側鎖は、配向領域62,63から配向領域66,67に向うにつれて、配向方位D2、D3に向うように傾斜している。
各配向方位D0,D1,D2,D3の方位角度は、基準方位DBを基準として設定される。具体的には、観察者が画面を真正面から観察している状態において、時計の3時の方位を基準方位DBとする。そして、基準方位DBに対して反時計回りの角度を、各配向方位D0,D1,D2,D3の方位角度とする。この図5に示す例においては、配向方位D0,D1の方位角度は、180°である。さらに、配向方位D2,D3の方位角度は、0°である。配向方位D0と、配向方位D1とは同じ方位であり、配向方位D2と配向方位D3とは同じ方位である。
配向膜39は、配向領域64~67を含む。配向領域64は、配向領域60と対向し、配向領域65は配向領域61と対向する。配向領域66は、配向領域62と対向し、配向領域67は、配向領域63と対向する。
配向領域64~67には、液晶層29内の液晶分子を所定の方向に配向するように光配向処理が施されている。
配向領域64,65,66,67の配向方位は、配向方位D4,D5,D6,D7とされている。なお、配向領域64,67に形成された側鎖は、配向領域64,67から配向領域60,63に向うにつれて、配向方位D4,D7に向うように傾斜している。同様に、配向領域65,66に形成された側鎖は、配向領域65,66から配向領域61,62に向うにつれて、配向方位D5,D6に向うように傾斜している。配向方位D4および配向方位D7の方位角度は、270°であり、配向方位D5および配向方位D6の方位角度は、90°である。
そして、配向領域60と配向領域64とによってドメイン70が形成され、配向領域61と配向領域65とによってドメイン71が形成されている。同様に、配向領域62と、配向領域66とによってドメイン72が形成され、配向領域63と配向領域67とによってドメイン73が形成されている。
図6および図7は、図5に示す配向膜38および配向膜39を配向膜38の上方から見たときの平面図である。
ここで、図6および図7において、ドメイン70のディレクタ方位は、配向方位D1および配向方位D5とによって定められており、図7に示すように、ドメイン70のディレクタ方位D10の方位角度α0は、225°とされている。
ドメイン71のディレクタ方位D11は、配向方位D2と配向方位D6とによって規定されており、ディレクタ方位D11の方位角度α1は、135°である。
ドメイン72のディレクタ方位D12は、配向方位D3と配向方位D7とによって規定されており、ディレクタ方位D12の方位角度α2は45°である。
ドメイン73のディレクタ方位D13は、配向方位D4と配向方位D8とによって規定されておりディレクタ方位D13の方位角度α3は、315°である。
ドメイン72、ドメイン71、ドメイン70およびドメイン73の順でディレクタ方位の方位角度が大きくなるように設定されている。なお、各ディレクタ方位の方位角度は、各ディレクタ方位が基準方位DBを基準として、反時計回りの回転角度とされている。
図5に示すように、1つの画素電極26の上方には、複数のドメイン70~73が形成されている。なお、この図5に示す例では、ドメインが4つ設けられた4ドメイン方式とされている。
そこで、ドメイン73に着目して、画素電極と共有電極との間に電圧が印加されていない無印加の状態のときと、電圧を印加した状態とにおいてドメイン73における液晶分子の振る舞いについて説明する。
図8は、配向領域63および配向領域67を示す斜視図であって、共有電極および画素電極に電圧が印加されていないときの状態を示す。
図8において、配向領域67の近傍に位置する液晶分子80は、配向領域67に形成された側鎖によって配向方位D7に配向している。そして、配向領域67上に位置する液晶分子80のチルト角は、プレチルト角θ1とされており、約88.2°となっている。
そして、上方に位置する液晶分80も配向領域67上に位置する液晶分子80にならって配列している。
液晶分子80Aは、配向領域63および配向領域67の間に位置する液晶分子80のうち、配向領域63および配向領域67の間の中央部に位置している。
この液晶分子80Aと配向領域67とのなすチルト角度は、たとえば、88.2°程度となるように設定されている。
この図8に示すように、共有電極と画素電極とに電圧が印加されていない状態においては、液晶分子80Aは、略直立した状態となっている。
図4において、バックライトユニット13からの光は、偏光板14をとおり、液晶層29、カラーフィルタ34および偏光板15をとおり外部に照射される。
この際、図8に示すように液晶分子80が直立した状態においては、偏光板14から入射した光が、液晶層29で偏光されずに、偏光板15で遮光される。すなわち、本実施の形態に係る液晶表示装置では、ノーマリーブラック型の液晶表示装置である。
図9は、配向領域63および配向領域67を示す斜視図であって、共有電極と画素電極とに電圧が印加された状態における斜視図である。この図9に示すように、液晶分子80は、配向領域63および配向領域67から離れるにつれて、上記図7に示すディレクタ方位D13に傾斜する。そして、配向領域63と、配向領域67との間に位置する液晶分子80のうち、配向領域63および配向領域67の間の中央部に位置する液晶分子80Aはディレクタ方位D13に向けて配向する。なお、下記表1は、電圧が印可された状態における各液晶分子の「チルト角(°)」と、「方位角(°)」とを示す。なお、「セル断面位置」とは、配置向領域67からの距離を示す。「チルト角」は、配向領域67と液晶分子とのなす角度である。
このように液晶分子80の配列が捩れた状態においては、バックライトユニット13からの光は、配向領域67から配向領域63に向かう間に光の振動方向が捩れる。その結果、配向領域63から外部に向かう光は、図4に示す偏光板15を通過する。このように、図7において、配向領域67および配向領域63によって形成されるドメイン73においては、電圧が印可されることで、厚さ方向の中央部に位置するディレクタ方位D13に向けて配向する。
同様に、図7において、ドメイン71においては、配向領域61と配向領域65との間の中央部に位置する液晶分子は、ディレクタ方位D11に向けて傾斜する。
ドメイン70においては、厚さ方向の中央部に位置する液晶分子は、ディレクタ方位D10に向けて傾斜する。さらに、ドメイン72においては、厚さ方向の中央部に位置する液晶分子は、ディレクタ方位D12に向けて傾斜する。
このように、各ドメインにおいて、液晶分子の傾斜方向が異なるので、観察者が多方向から画面をみたとしても、色合いが変化することを抑制することができる。
図10は、図5に示す画素電極26と、配向膜39とを配向膜39の上方から平面視したときの平面図である。図10において、配向領域64と、配向領域65との境界部分を境界線86とし、配向領域65と配向領域66との境界部分を境界線87とする。さらに、配向領域66と配向領域67との境界部分を境界線88とする。また配向領域67と配向領域64との境界部分を境界線89とする。
画素電極26は、配向領域64,65,66,67のうち、境界線86,87,88,89と隣り合う部分と対向すると共に、境界線86,87,88,89の延在方向に延びるスリット形成領域81と、このスリット形成領域81と隣り合うように配置された平坦面領域82,83,84,85とを含む。
図11は、画素電極26の平面図である。この図11に示すように、スリット形成領域81には、複数のスリット90,91,92,93が形成されている。
具体的には、画素電極26のスリット形成領域81のうち、図10に示す配向領域64と対向する部分には、複数のスリット90が形成されている。スリット形成領域81のうち、図10に示す配向領域65と対向する部分には複数のスリット91が形成されている。
スリット形成領域81のうち、図10に示す配向領域66と対向する部分には、複数のスリット92が形成されている。スリット形成領域81のうち、図10に示す配向領域67と対向する部分には、複数のスリット93が形成されている。
スリット90は、境界線86および境界線89に沿って間隔をあけて形成されており、スリット91は、境界線86および境界線87に沿って間隔をあけて複数形成されている。スリット92は、境界線87および境界線88に沿って間隔をあけて複数形成されている。スリット93は、境界線88および境界線89に沿って間隔をあけて複数形成されている。
平坦面領域82,83,84,85には、スリットが形成されておらず、平坦面状に形成されている。
平坦面領域82は、スリット形成領域81のうち、スリット90が位置する部分と隣り合うように配置されており、平坦面領域83は、スリット形成領域81のうち、スリット91が位置する部分と隣り合うように配置されている。平坦面領域84は、スリット形成領域81のうち、スリット92が位置する部分と隣り合うように配置されている。平坦面領域85は、スリット形成領域81のうち、スリット93が位置する部分と隣り合うように配置されている。
図12は、上記図11のうち、スリット90,91およびその周囲に位置する部分を示す平面図である。なお、この図12においては、液晶分子80は押しピン形状に模式的に示している。そして、液晶分子80の端部80aは、観察者が画面を観察した際に観察者側に位置する端部を示す。液晶分子80の軸部80bは、長円形形状の液晶分子80の胴体部分を示す。
図12に示すように、画素電極26は、スリット90およびスリット91の間に位置する部分に位置する幹部95と、この幹部95に接続され、スリット90の間に位置する枝部96と、幹部95に接続され、スリット91の間に位置する枝部97とを含む。
スリット形成領域81の幅W1は、たとえば、20μm程度とされている。スリット90およびスリット91は境界線86を挟んで間隔をあけて配置されている。スリット90およびスリット91間の距離L1は、たとえば、4μm程度とされている。
スリット90の幅W2は、たとえば、3μm程度とされ、スリット90同士の間隔は、たとえば、4μm程度とされている。同様に、スリット91のW3も、たとえば、3μm程度とされており、スリット91同士の間隔も、4μm程度とされている。
ここで、スリット90は、境界線86側から平坦面領域82に向けて延びており、スリット91も、境界線86側から平坦面領域83に向けて延びている。
そして、スリット90の延在方向のうち、境界線86側から平坦面領域82側に向けて延びる方向をスリット90の延在方位D90とする。
スリット91の延在方向のうち、平坦面領域83側から境界線86に向けて延びる方向をスリット91の延在方位D91とする。
この図12および上記図7において、平坦面領域82上に位置するドメイン70のディレクタ方位D10は、225°であり、平坦面領域83上に位置するドメイン71のディレクタ方位D11は、135°である。
スリット90の延在方位D90の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D10の方位角度以上であり、図12に示す例においては、ディレクタ方位D10と同じ225°とされている。
スリット91の延在方位D91の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D11の方位角度以下である。そして、スリット91の延在方位D91は、ディレクタ方位D11と等しく135°とされている。
なお、図11に示すスリット92の延在方向のうち、境界線88側から平坦面領域84側に向かう方向をスリット92の延在方位とすると、スリット92の延在方位は、スリット90の延在方位と同じ方位である。
スリット93の延在方向のうち、平坦面領域85側から境界線88に向かう方位をスリット93の延在方位とすると、スリット93の延在方位は、スリット91の延在方位と同じ方位である。
図12に示された液晶分子80は、画素電極および共有電極に所定電位を印加したときの液晶分子80であり、液晶層の厚さ方向の中央部に位置する液晶分子80を示す。
ここで、平坦面領域82上に位置する液晶分子80は、ドメイン70のディレクタ方位D10に向けて傾斜している。平坦面領域83上に位置する液晶分子80は、ドメイン71のディレクタ方位D11に向けて傾斜している。
ここで、図13は、スリット90,91が形成されていない場合における比較例を示す平面図である。なお、この図13に示す例においても、画素電極26と共有電極とに所定電位が印加されており、この図13に示す液晶分子80も、液晶層の厚さ方向の中央部に位置する。
この図13において、画素電極26にスリット90,91が形成されていない場合には、液晶分子80は、ドメイン70側からドメイン71側に向かうにつれて、液晶分子80の方位角度がディレクタ方位D10からディレクタ方位D11となるように変化する。ドメイン70とドメイン71との境界領域上に位置する液晶分子80のうち、ドメイン70側に位置する液晶分子80の配向方位の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D10の方位角度よりも小さくなっている。これは、ドメイン71のディレクタ方位D11の方位角度の方が、ドメイン70のディレクタ方位D10の方位角度よりも小さいためである。
そして、ドメイン70とドメイン71との境界領域上に位置する液晶分子80のうち、ドメイン71側に位置する液晶分子80の配向方位の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D11の方位角度より大きくなっている。
その結果、ドメイン70およびドメイン71の境界領域では、液晶分子80が所定の方位に向かず、暗線が生じる原因となる。
その一方で、本実施の形態に係る液晶表示装置においては、スリット90,91が形成されているため、ドメイン70およびドメイン71の境界部分に位置する領域においても、液晶分子80の方位が乱れることを抑制することができる。その原理について、図14を用いて説明する。
図14は、スリット90および液晶分子80を示す平面図である。この図14に示すように、画素電極26に所定の電位が印加されると、スリット90および枝部96の間で電界Eが発生する。
電界Eの方向は、スリット90の周縁部に垂直であり、スリット90および枝部96の縁部に沿って分布する。これにより、スリット90上およびスリット91上に位置する液晶分子80の姿勢が矯正される。
ここで、スリット90が形成されていない場合には、スリット形成領域81のうち、平坦面領域82側に位置する液晶分子80は、配向方位がディレクタ方位D10よりも、小さくなる。その一方で、本実施の形態に係る液晶表示装置2においては、スリット90の延在方位D90の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D10の方位角度以上とされている。このため、スリット90および枝部96上に位置する液晶分子80は、配向方位が大きくなるように矯正される。
この結果、スリット90および枝部96上に位置する液晶分子80の配向方位が、ディレクタ方位D10またはディレクタ方位D10に近似する。
ここで、図12において、画素電極26に電位が印加されることで、スリット91および枝部97の間においても、電界が発生する。
その結果、スリット91および枝部97上に位置する液晶分子80も、当該電界によって姿勢が矯正される。
スリット91の延在方位D91の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D11の方位角度以下とされている。
なお、スリット91が形成されていない場合には、スリット形成領域81のうちドメイン71側に位置する液晶分子80の方位角度はディレクタ方位D11の方位角度よりも大きくなる。
その一方で、スリット91の延在方位D91の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D11の方位角度以下とされているため、スリット91および枝部97上に位置する液晶分子80は、方位角度が小さくなるように矯正される。
その結果、スリット91および枝部97上に位置する液晶分子80の方位が、ディレクタ方位D11またはディレクタ方位D11に近似する。
なお、本実施の形態においては、スリット90の延在方位D90の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D10の方位角度以上であり、延在方位D90とディレクタ方位D10とのなす角度は、0°以上であり、45°よりも小さい。また、スリット91の延在方位D91の方位角度は、ディレクタ方位D11の方位角度以下であり、延在方位D91とディレクタ方位D11との交差角度も、0°以上であり、45°よりも小さい。
延在方位D90,D91と、ディレクタ方位D10,D11との交差角度のより好ましい範囲としては、延在方位D90とディレクタ方位D10とのなす角度が0°以上30°以下であり、延在方位D91とディレクタ方位D10とのなす角度が0°以上30°以下の範囲である。
さらに、各交差角度の好ましい範囲とは、延在方位D90とディレクタ方位D10とのなす角度が0°以上15°以下であり、延在方位D91とディレクタ方位D10とのなす角度が0°以上15°以下の範囲である。
すなわち、スリット90は、ドメイン70のディレクタ方位D10と一致またはディレクタ方位D10に沿うように形成するのが好ましく、スリット91は、ドメイン71のディレクタ方位D11と一致またはディレクタ方位D11に沿うように形成するのが好ましい。
スリット90およびスリット91とについて詳細に説明したが、スリット91およびスリット92と、スリット92およびスリット93と、スリット93およびスリット90とにおいても、スリット90およびスリット91と同様に形成されている。
ここで、図12などに示されるように、スリット90,91は、延在方位D90,91に長尺な形状とされている。具体的には、スリット90、91は、延在方位D90,D91に延びる長辺部と、延在方位D90,D91に配列する短辺部とを含む方形形状とされている。
図15は、スリット90、スリット91および幹部95を示す平面図である。この図15において、スリット90の周辺部は、短辺部101と、長辺部102とを含み、短辺部101および長辺部102によって頂点部103が形成されている。
同様に、スリット91の周辺部も、短辺部104と、長辺部105とを含み、短辺部104および長辺部105によって頂点部106が形成されている。
そして、図15において、高電界領域HBは、スリット90およびスリット91の周囲に形成される電界のうち、強度の高い領域を示す。
この図15に示すように、頂点部103および頂点部106の周囲には広い高電界領域HBが形成される。このため高電界領域HBが境界線86の近傍にまで達するように形成されており、多くの液晶分子80の姿勢を矯正することができ、広い範囲に亘って液晶分子80を矯正することができる。
図17から図24を用いて、本発明の実施例について説明する。なお、図17から図24に示す構成のうち、上記図1から図16に示す構成と同一または相当する構成については、同一の符号を付してその説明を省略する場合がある。
なお、図17~図24は、画素電極が異なる各種の液晶表示装置2を準備して、画素電極26および共有電極35に所定の電圧を印加した状態で、対向基板21側から画素やドメインを観察したときの様子を示している。
なお、本実施例においても、ドメイン70のディレクタ方位D10の方位角度は、225°とされている。ドメイン71のディレクタ方位D11の方位角度は、135°である。ドメイン72のディレクタ方位D12の方位角度は45°である。ドメイン73のディレクタ方位D13の方位角度は、315°である。
図16は、スリットが形成されていない画素電極を用いたときのドメイン70、71を示す平面図である。この図17に示す例においては、境界線86上およびその周囲に太い暗線が形成されていることがわかる。なお、図17は、上記図16のように画素電極にスリットが形成されていない画素電極を用いたときのドメイン70~73を示す平面図である。
この図17に示すように、暗線は、ドメイン70とドメイン71との境界部分と、ドメイン71とドメイン72との境界部分と、ドメイン72とドメイン73との境界部分と、ドメイン73とドメイン70との境界部分にも形成されていることがわかる。
図18は、スリット90,91が形成された画素電極を用いたときのドメイン70,71を観察したときの平面図であり、図19は、図18を模式的に示す平面図である。
この図18および図19に示す例においては、スリット90,91の延在方向と、境界線86とのなす角度θ3は、15°とされている。換言すれば、ディレクタ方位D10と延在方位D90との交差角度は、30°であり、ディレクタ方位D11と延在方位D91との交差角度も、30°である。
このようなスリット90,91を形成した場合には、図18からも明らかなように、図16に示される暗線よりも形成される暗線の太さが細くなっていることがわかる。
図20は、スリット90,91が形成された画素電極を用いたときのドメイン70,71を観察したときの平面図であり、図21は、図20を模式的に示す平面図である。
この図20および図21に示す例においては、スリット90,91の延在方向と、境界線86とのなす角度θ4は、30°とされている。換言すれば、ディレクタ方位D10と延在方位D90との交差角度は、15°であり、ディレクタ方位D11と延在方位D91との交差角度も、15°である。
図20からも明らかなように、図20に示される暗線は、図18に示された暗線よりも細くなっていることがわかる。
図22は、スリット90,91が形成された画素電極を用いたときのドメイン70,71を観察したときの平面図であり、図23は、図22を模式的に示す平面図である。
この図22および図23に示す例においては、スリット90,91の延在方向と、境界線86とのなす角度θ5は、45°とされている。換言すれば、ディレクタ方位D10と延在方位D90との交差角度は、0°であり、ディレクタ方位D11と延在方位D91との交差角度も、0°である。
図22からも明らかなように、図22に示す暗線は、図16に示された暗線よりも細くなっている。
図24は、図16から図23に示す各液晶表示装置2の輝度を比較したグラフである。この図22の横軸は、スリット90,91の角度θ(θ3、θ4、θ5)を示す。縦軸は、スリット90,91が形成されていない図16に示す液晶表示装置2の輝度を100%としたときに、図18、図20および図21に示す液晶表示装置2の輝度を示す。
この図24からも明らかなように、角度θが0度より大きいスリット90,91が形成されることで液晶表示装置2の輝度が向上していることがわかる。
さらに、角度θが15度以上45度以下の場合には、高い輝度を得ることができることがわかる。さらに、角度θが30度以上45度以下の場合には、さらに、高い輝度を得ることできることがわかる。
ここで、上記のように画素電極26にスリットを形成した例について説明したが、共有電極35にスリットを形成してもよく、さらに、画素電極26および共有電極35のいずれにもスリットを形成してもよい。
図25は、共有電極35にスリットを形成した例を示す平面図である。なお、この図25に示す例においては、画面側から共有電極35を平面視したときの平面図である。
この図25に示す例においても、共有電極35は、配向領域60~63のうち、各配向領域60~63の境界線の周囲に位置する部分と対向するスリット形成領域181と、このスリット形成領域181と隣り合うように配置され、平坦面状の平坦面領域182~185とを含む。このスリット形成領域181には、複数のスリット190~193が形成されている。
スリット形成領域181のうち、配向領域60と対向する部分には、複数のスリット190が形成されている。スリット形成領域181のうち、配向領域61と対向する部分には、スリット191が形成されている。スリット形成領域181のうち、配向領域62と対向する部分には、複数のスリット192がけいせいされている。スリット形成領域181のうち、配向領域163と対向する部分には、複数のスリット193が形成されている。なお、各スリット191,192,193,193の延在方位は、図11に示すスリット91,92,93,94の延在方位と同じ方位とされている。
以上のように本発明の実施の形態および実施例について説明を行ったが、今回開示された実施の形態および実施例はすべての点で例示であって制限的なものではないと考えられるべきである。本発明の範囲は請求の範囲によって示され、請求の範囲と均等の意味および範囲内でのすべての変更が含まれることが意図される。さらに、上記数値などは、例示であり、上記数値および範囲にかぎられない。
本発明は、液晶表示装置に適用することができ、特に、複数のドメインを有する液晶表示装置に好適である。

Claims (7)
- 複数の液晶分子(80)を含む液晶層(29)と、
前記液晶層(29)と隣り合うように配置された第1配向膜(39)と、
前記第1配向膜(39)に設けられ、前記液晶分子(80)を配向する第1配向領域(65)と、
前記第1配向膜(39)に設けられると共に前記第1配向領域(65)と隣り合うように配置され、前記液晶分子(80)を配向する第2配向領域(64)と、
前記第1配向膜(39)に対して前記液晶層(29)と反対側に配置された電極(26,35)と、
前記電極(26,35)に設けられ、前記第1配向領域(65)および前記第2配向領域(64)の境界線(86)と隣り合う部分と対向すると共に、前記境界線(86)の延在方向に延びるスリット形成領域(81)と、
前記電極(26,35)に設けられると共に前記スリット形成領域(81)と隣り合うように配置され、前記第1配向領域(65)と対向する平坦面状の第1平坦領域(83)と、
前記電極(26,35)に設けられると共に前記スリット形成領域(81)と隣り合うように配置され、前記第2配向領域(64)と対向する平坦面状の第2平坦領域(82)と、
前記スリット形成領域(81)のうち、前記第1配向領域(65)と対向する部分に形成され、前記境界線(86)側から前記第1平坦領域(83)に向けて延びる複数の第1スリット(91)と、
前記スリット形成領域(81)のうち、前記第2配向領域(64)と対向する部分に形成され、前記境界線(86)側から前記第2平坦領域(82)に向けて延びる複数の第2スリット(90)と、
前記液晶層(29)を挟んで前記第1配向領域(65)と対向する第3配向領域(61)と、前記液晶層(29)を挟んで前記第2配向領域(64)と対向する第4配向領域(60)とを含む第2配向膜と、
を備え、
前記第1配向領域(65)と前記第3配向領域(61)とは、前記液晶分子(80)のうち前記第1配向領域(65)と第3配向領域(61)との間の中央部に位置する液晶分子(80)を第1ディレクタ方位(D11)に向けて配向するように形成され、
前記第2配向領域(64)と前記第4配向領域(60)とは、前記液晶分子(80)のうち前記第2配向領域(64)と第4配向領域(60)との間の中央部に位置する液晶分子(80)を、前記第1ディレクタ方位(D11)より方位角度の大きい第2ディレクタ方位(D10)に向けて配向するように形成され、
前記第1スリット(91)の延在方向のうち、前記第1平坦領域(83)側から前記境界線(86)に向かう方向を第1スリット方位とし、前記第2スリット(90)の延在方向のうち、前記境界線(86)から離れる方向を第2スリット方位とすると、
前記第1スリット方位の方位角度は、前記第1ディレクタ方位(D11)の方位角度以下とされ、
前記第2スリット方位の方位角度は前記第2ディレクタ方位(D10)の方位角度以上とされた、液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1スリット方位と前記第1ディレクタ方位(D11)との交差角度は、0°以上であって45°より小さく、
前記第2スリット方位と前記第2ディレクタ方位(D10)との交差角度は、0°以上であって45°より小さい、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1スリット方位と前記第1ディレクタ方位(D11)との交差角度は、0°以上30°以下とされ、
前記第2スリット方位と前記第2ディレクタ方位(D10)との交差角度は、0°以上30°以下とされた、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1スリットと前記第2スリット(90)とは、前記境界線(86)をはさんで互いに間隔をあけて形成された、請求項1から請求項3のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記電極(26,35)は、画素電極(26)である、請求項1から請求項4のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記電極(26,35)は、対向電極(35)である、請求項1から請求項4のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1配向領域(65)の配向規制方位(D5)と、前記第3配向領域(61)の配向方位(D1)とは互い交差し、
前記第2配向領域(64)の配向規制方位(D4)と、前記第4配向領域(60)の配向方位(D0)とが互いに交差する、請求項1から請求項6のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
