Description

Device for sealing a door opening against intrusion of water
The present invention refers to a device for sealing a door opening against intrusion of water, for example during thunderstorms or flood.
Pursuant to the International Patent Classification, such invention belongs to fixed constructions, namely to closures for openings in buildings and more exactly to screening or protective devices for doors, in particular for protecting against intrusion of water.
The purpose of the invention is to create an universal device, by means of which a door opening, which comprises at least approximately flat bottom horizontal surface as well as at least approximately flat outer vertical surfaces, could be when needed efficiently sealed against the intrusion of water up to a pre-determined level thereof, upon which at least emergency passing through the door opening should still be possible, wherein the door opening as such should not need to be furnished with any additional elements.
A device for sealing a door opening against intrusion of water is described in FR 2 853 685. Such device comprises a rectangular sealing panel, which is on the inner side, which is faced towards the doors, on the one longer edge and on both shorter edges furnished with sealing members. The sealing member on the longer edge is adapted for resting on the outer surface of the door-step, and sealing members on both shorter edges are adapted for resting on both outer sides of corresponding vertical walls of the door opening. Moreover, two pairs of arresting means are foreseen on said outer surfaces, or in the area of plaster, and are arranged at different distances apart from the ground level. Each pair of said arresting means is adapted to cooperate with a single ledge, which is inserted into each pair of arresting means, which are located at approximately the same distance apart from the ground level. Thanks to said ledges, the panel with corresponding sealing members is then pressed towards the door-step and also towards the outer walls adjacent to the door opening, by which the last should be prevented from intrusion of water. In order to assure functioning of such device, said arresting means need to be integrated into each building, and in addition to that, the door-step area in both planes of the door opening and the plaster must be quite precisely made. Besides, the sealing may still be pretty questionable, since the arresting means is capable to press the panel towards the outer surface of the building only in a limited extent, by which said outer surfaces are usually not absolutely even.
A still further device is described in FR 2 823 525, where a door opening or a window opening is furnished with an inner frame together with a wing, which is furnished with an inflatable sealing member, which extends along the circumference thereof. Whenever there is a danger of intrusion of the water, the air is blown into said sealing member, the pressure of which is upon that maintained at each reliable level. Such a device is specially designed for each particular door or window wing. Whenever the flood occurs, the pressure must be established and maintained within the sealing member, which is feasible by means of the air compressor. However, during the flood the electricity supply is usually problematic, so that establishing and maintaining the pressure within the sealing members may then lead to serious problems. A still further device is described in WO 2006/061520. In fact, it is a sealing frame, which is furnished with appropriate sealing members and can be inserted into each door opening, where it is then maintained in position by means of a post and also supported by means of appropriate supporting elements. Said frame is essentially formed in the shape of the letter U, and consists of a horizontal arm and two vertical arms, which extend essentially parallel to each other and rectangular with respect to the firstly mentioned arm. A sealing panel is inserted within said arms, by means of which the majority of the door opening is filled. A vertically extending telescopic post is placed adjacent to said frame and panel, wherein said post consists of sections, which are inserted into each other and interconnected by means of a thread, and can be inserted between the door-step i.e. the bottom horizontal surface of the door opening and the door lintel i.e. the top horizontal surface of the door opening. Appropriate supporting members are laterally linked to said post, and each supporting member is on the opposite end portion linked to each corresponding area of the sealing frame. Each supporting member consists of two coaxially extending stick-shaped compressing elements, which are each per se furnished with an internal thread, the first one with a left thread and the second one with a right thread. Said elements are interconnected by means of a connecting member, which is also furnished with right and left threaded coaxially apart from each other protruding end portions. Such device is mounted into a door opening in such a way that in the first step said frame together with the sealing members, which are then rest onto the door-step and both vertical surfaces of the door opening. Upon that, said post is placed into the central region of the door opening, and is fixed between the door-step and the lintel by means of rotating the coaxial sections relatively with regard to each other. Upon that, the supporting members are connected on the one hand to the post and on the other hand to the sealing frame. Due to rotation of relevant connecting members, each supporting member is then pressed towards the post and simultaneously also towards the sealing frame, which is then pressed towards the door opening, by which the sealing member is tightly rest onto each corresponding surface of the door opening for the purposes of sealing thereof. Introducing more supporting members leads to more uniform resting of the frame and the sealing members onto surfaces of the door opening. It is clear for those skilled in the art that such device is applicable in a door opening of pre-determined dimensions and is generally not the universal one. Moreover, the device consists of numerous generally separate components, the assembling of which requires some practice and is not very simple for an average user, in particular not in extraordinary circumstances and under the time pressure. It is also obvious that the sealing frame and the panel are maintained in position by means of the pressure which is generated by the supporting members, which are linked on the one hand to the post and on the other hand to said frame, wherein said pressure is acting in the plane which is perpendicular with respect to the direction, in which the hydrostatic pressure is acting during the sealing in the case of flood. In order to ensure a required functionality in such inappropriate loading conditions, the supporting members are extremely compressed, which might lead even to damages in the area of the door opening as such. Quite analogous problem occurs in the post, which is compressed between the door-step and the lintel. Stability of the lintel depends on building construction as such, and using such sealing device e.g. in buildings which are made of bricks can easily result in cracks and/or displacements of the lintel. Moreover, the presence of the post and the supporting members in the area within the door opening makes each logistic throughout the door opening practically impossible. This means that also in a relatively low water level around the building, which may e.g. not exceed 30 cm and above the bottom level of the door opening in the area of the door-step, when walking around is still possible, the door opening is practically completely closed, which makes entering the building or leaving it through the door opening quite impossible. When considering all practical aspects, even by establishing reliable sealing of the door opening the building must be completely evacuated, since each further residing within the building without any possibility to exit may lead to serious risk in the sense of arising problems, in particularly when the water lever is still increasing and the situation might get worse.

The invention however optionally provides also the inner barrier 2, which is (Fig. 2) arranged at certain distance apart from the outer barrier 1 , so that a gap is available between both aforementioned barriers 1 , 2, into which a pump (not shown) can be placed, which is preferably a submersible pump.
The device in mounted state is shown in Fig. 2. The door opening 3, into which a desired embodiment of the device according to the invention can be mounted, comprises a bottom horizontal surface 30, at least two vertical outer surfaces 3 , 31 ", which are spaced apart from each other and extend at least approximately in the same plane, two vertical inner surfaces 32', 32" which are also spaced apart from each other and extend at least approximately parallel with respect to previously mentioned vertical outer surfaces 3 , 31 ", and two vertical lateral surfaces 33', 33", which are faced to each other and usually extend parallel to each other and at least approximately perpendicularly with respect to previously mentioned inner surfaces 32', 32" and outer surfaces 31 ', 31 ".
Said bottom horizontal surface 30 extends essentially in the horizontal plane in front of the outer vertical surfaces 3 , 31 " and at least approximately perpendicularly with respect to the lastly mentioned ones. Moreover, the door opening 3 comprises a top horizontal surface, which however generally has no impact to functioning of the invention and is therefore neither shown nor marked on the drawing.
The outer barrier 1 of the device according to the invention comprises a sealing frame 1 1 and a mounting mechanism 12. In this particular embodiment, the sealing frame 1 is formed by a front sealing panel 11 1, which is adapted for resting on the bottom horizontal surface 30 of the door opening 3, and two lateral sealing arms 110', 110", which each per se protrude apart from said front sealing panel 110 towards each mounting location in the area of the door opening 3 and which are also adapted for resting on the bottom horizontal surface 30 of the door opening 3 and moreover also on outer vertical surfaces 3 , 31 ". Thanks to said sealing arms 110', 110", the front sealing panel 111, when mounted, is maintained at appropriate distance apart from the door opening 3. Said sealing arms 110', 110" are mutually interconnected either in a detachable or in a non-detachable manner, in each case tightly and capable of preventing intrusion of water in the area of each junction between the panel 1 1 1 and each corresponding arm 1 10', 110".
Said front sealing panel 111 is furnished with a beam 11 11 which is arranged in approximately central region thereof and comprises a plurality of preferably equidistantly spaced passages 1112, as well as with two connecting members 113', 113" which are located adjacent to said sealing arms 1 10', 110" and similarly like said beam 1 1 1 1 serve for the purposes of establishing each required interconnection between the sealing panel 1 11 and the mounting mechanism 2. Besides, said front sealing panel 1 1 1 is furnished with a U-profile 11 15, which is located at the bottom region thereof and is in profile deflected away from the bottom horizontal surface 30 of the door opening 3. Each sealing arm 110', 110" of the outer barrier 1 1 comprises at least one at least approximately horizontally extending U-profile 1105', 1105", as well as at least one at least approximately horizontally extending U-profile 1106', 1106".
Vertical U-profiles 1 106', 1 106" are adapted to receive appropriate seals 117', 1 17" which are adapted for resting on outer vertical surfaces 3 Γ, 31" of the door opening 3.
Each of horizontal U-profiles 1 105', 1105" is similarly like the U-profile 11 15 of the front sealing panel 1 11 adapted to receive a vertically movable sealing ledge 118 together with a corresponding sealing member which is not separately shown in the drawing (Fig. 5) but is simultaneously with each corresponding sealing ledge 1 18 adapted for resting on the bottom horizontal surface 30 of the door opening 3. Said sealing ledge 1 18 is an uniform piece which is tightly inserted within said profiles 11 15, 1 105', 1 105" of the front sealing panel 11 1 and both sealing arms 1 10', 1 10". Moreover, said ledge 118 is displaceable in the vertical direction relatively with to said sealing arms 110', 110" and the front sealing panel 111 by means of spindles 1 19' which are adapted to cooperate with corresponding nuts 119" or threaded bushes which are firmly connected at least with U-profiles 1 105', 1 105" of the sealing arms 110', 110" and optionally also with the U- profile 1 115 of the front sealing panel 1 11.
The mounting mechanism 12 essentially consists of at least two supporting beams 120', 120", which are each per se pivotally connected to outer barrier 1 in the area of the beam 1 11 1 on the front sealing panel 1 11 and each of them is furnished with a vertical resting edge 12Γ, 121", preferably in the form of U-profile with a sufficiently hard rubber inserted therein, as well as of tensioning assemblies 130, by means of which said beams 120', 120" are each per se connected with each corresponding connecting member 1113', 1 1 13" on the front sealing panel 111.
Each of said tensioning assemblies 130 comprises a usual tensioning member 131 which is furnished with coaxially extending left and right threaded bores and is adapted to cooperate with appropriately rigid arms 132, 133 of which the one is furnished with the left thread and the other with the right thread, and one of them is pivotally connected to said connecting member 1 113', 1 1 13", and the other with the free end of each corresponding supporting beam 120', 120".
As soon ad the sealing frame 1 1 is placed into the area of each corresponding door opening 3, the sealing ledge 1 18 is rest on the bottom horizontal surface 30 of the door opening 3 and the vertical U-profiles 1 106', 1 106" of the arms 1 10', 110" are located adjacent to the outer vertical surfaces 3 , 31 " of the door opening 3. Both supporting beams 120', 120" are connected with the sealing frame 11 by means of a pin 14 or any other similar elements in the area of passages 1 112 on the beam 11 11, so that the resting edges 121 ', 121 " are placed adjacent to the lateral surfaces 33', 33" of the door opening 3. The supporting beams 120', 120" are moreover by means of tensioning assemblies 130 connected to the connecting members 1 1 13', 1 113" on the sealing frame 1 1. By turning and tensioning the tensioning members 131, the supporting beams 120', 120" are pivoted apart from each other, by which the sealing frame 1 1 approaches to the door opening 3 and by which the sealing edges 121 ', 121 " of the beams 120', 120" become tightly rest on vertical lateral surfaces 33', 33" of the door opening 3. By this, the sealing frame 1 1 is already fixed in the area of the door opening 3, and vertical sealing members 1 17', 1 17 of the U-profiles 1 106', 1 106" of the arms 1 10', 1 10" of the sealing frame 1 1 are tightly rest on outer vertical surfaces 3 , 31 " of the door opening 3. By subsequently displacing the sealing ledge 1 18 due to rotating spindles 119', said sealing ledge 118 is tightly rest on the bottom horizontal surface 30 of the door opening 3, by which said door opening 3 is sealed both in the area of the bottom horizontal surface 30 and also in the area of the outer vertical surfaces 31 ', 31 " along the complete height of the sealing frame 1 1.
When desired, the sealing reliability may be further improved by introducing the inner barrier 2, which is adapted for resting on the bottom horizontal surface 30 and the inner vertical surfaces 32', 32" of the door opening 3, and which is then assisting to seal in addition to the outer barrier 1 which is formed by the sealing frame 11 and the belonging mounting mechanism 12.
The inner barrier 2 generally consists of a rigid water-tight plate 20 which is furnished with a circumferential sealing edge 21 formed e.g. of an U-profile filled with rubber sealing member, as well as of tensioning members 22 which are adapted to connect said plate 20 with the sealing frame 1 1 of the outer barrier 1. In the shown embodiment (Figs. 6 - 9), said plate 20 is via the tensioning members 22 connected to the beam 1 1 11 on the front panel 1 11 of the sealing frame 11 of the outer barrier 1.
When the outer barrier 1 is mounted in the area of the door opening 3 in a previously described manner, then also the plate 20 of the inner barrier 2 can be mounted in the area of said door opening in such a manner that said plate 20 is rest on the bottom horizontal surface 30 and at the same time also on the inner vertical surfaces 32', 32" of the door opening 3. Appropriately tight contact between the inner vertical surfaces 32', 32" of the door opening 3 and the sealing edge 21 of the inner barrier 2 is achieved by means of tensioning members 22, wherein such obtained tensioning forces within the tensioning members 22 between the inner barrier 2 and the outer barrier 1 may still further improve the sealing capability of the outer barrier 1 as such.
Besides, a pump for pumping leakage water can be placed into a gap between the outer barrier 1 and the inner barrier 2, which may be preferred in particular in situations, when sealing capability of the outer barrier 1 is questionable for example due to irregularities or damages on the outer surfaces 30, 31 ', 31 " of the door opening 3, which would normally have to be essentially flat, or also in such cases, when upon mounting the device according the invention there is still a probability that the water level could still raise above the height of the sealing frame 1 1 of the outer barrier 1.
