- link management protocols manage the status of data links independently for each layer. For example, in a multilayer network in which the Ethernet L2 layer and the optical layer are connected, the conventional link management protocol manages the states of the Ethernet link and the optical link (optical cable) separately. The problem with this conventional approach is that in the case of a multi-layer network, failures occurring at the physical connection points between the upper and lower layers cannot be detected.

- the data link management block 1070 may detect a link state of the converters 1020 and 1050 which are connection points between the packet transport layer and the optical transport layer.
- the data link management block 1070 may detect a failure of the connection point by using the link state, and notify a neighbor node of the change of the data link state at the detected connection point.

- the data link management block 1070 notifies the neighbor node of the link failure by using the channel status message to change the data link status of each layer. If a failure occurs in the converters 1020 and 1050 between the two layers, the data link management block 1070 detects the failure of the inter-layer connection point, and then checks the status of the data link of the lower layer assigned to the inter-layer connection point.
도 1을 참조하면, RSVP-TE(Resource Reservation Protocol-Traffic Engineering, 120)는 경로를 설정하는 시그널링 프로토콜이다. CSPF/RTM(130)에서 네트워크 토폴로지를 생성할 때 필요한 정보는 OSPF(Open Shortest Path First, 140)에서 제공하는 TE 링크의 트래픽 엔지니어링 정보이다.
(2)evSumAck: LinkSummary
(3)evSumNack: LinkSummary
(4)evRcvAck: LinkSummaryAck
(5)evRcvNack: LinkSummaryNack
(7)evCCUp: 제어 채널이 Up됨
(8)evCCDown: 제어 채널이 Down됨
<LinkSummary Message> :: = <Common Header> <MESSAGE_ID> <TE_LINK> <DATA_LINK> [<DATA_LINK> ...] <Higher_TE_LINK> <Lower_TE_LINK>
<LinkSummaryAck Message> :: = <Common Header> <MESSAGE_ID_ACK>
<LinkSummaryNack Message> :: = <Common Header> <MESSAGE_ID_ACK> <ERROR_CODE> [<DAYA_LINK> ...] <Lower_TE_LINK>
