Description
DESCRIPTION
Wheel Fender Support
This invention relates to a wheel fender support. More specifically the invention relates to a rear wheel fender support on an agricultural vehicle.
Modern day wheel fenders on agricultural vehicles, such as agricultural tractors are made of a plastics material. The fenders are generally attached to the cab or chassis of the vehicle by a number of bolts on the underside (wheel side) of the fenders. Given the width of agricultural tractor tyres, the distance of the inner contour of the fender (that is the fender contour in contact with the chassis/cab) to the outer contour of the fender is sizeable. To save manufacturing and assembly costs, it is usual to manufacture a main fender part of a fixed width which is directly attached to the cab as described above.. Additional fender extensions can then be attached to the fenders to cater for a variety of tyre sizes. The disadvantage of using plastics material for fenders is that a plastics material lacks stiffness and therefore the fender requires a complex construction on its underside to give it the necessary stiffness. Additionally the fenders mainly extend rearwards from the cab which means the rear part of the fender must be additionally supported. This can be expensive. Additionally, the fender must be mounted a certain height above the wheel which is determined by the maximum recommended tyre size for the vehicle and the suspension of the driver's cab.. The height of the fender may obstruct the driver's view from the cab towards the rear and sides of the tractor. The more supporting structure that is provided under the fender, the higher the fender must be mounted to allow for suspension clearance.
Often lights and/ or warning signs are mounted to the rear wheel fenders which adds to the weight of the fender and impacts on the design and support structure of the fender. In addition, these lights and/ or warning signs can obstruct the driver's view from the cab.
It is an aim of the present invention to overcome, or at least alleviate the problems set out above.
According to the invention, there is provided a wheel fender support for an agricultural vehicle, said fender support comprising a mounting element for connecting an outer surface of a wheel fender to a driver's cab, said mounting element providing a mounting surface for mounting a light and/or warning sign thereto.
Preferable features of the invention are set out in the dependent claims.
The invention has the advantage that a complex support construction under the fender is not required and therefore the fender can be fitted to the vehicle in a lower position than was previously possible. This reduces the time taken and money involved in mounting the fender to the vehicle.
The present invention also provides a mounting surface for mounting a warning sign and light thereto thus reducing the weight carried by the fender. Further, the fender support can be positioned behind a post or C -pillar of the cab, in an area that the driver cannot normally view from the cab. Any warning sign and/or light attached to the fender support in this position does not further obstruct the driver's view from the cab. This has the advantage that the driver has a better view toward the rear and sides of the vehicle.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only with reference to the following drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a typical agricultural tractor,
Figures 2 and 3 are perspective views of the fender support in accordance with the invention,
Figures 4 is a plan view of the fender support in accordance with the invention, and
Figures 5a and 5b show two alternative arrangements for attaching the fender support to a fender.
Figure 1 shows a side view of an agricultural tractor 1 known in the art having a driver's cab la and rear wheel fenders 2 mounted above rear wheels 2a. A warning sign 3 and light 4 are attached to and carried by rear wheel fenders 2. As can be clearly seen in figure 1 warning sign 3 and light 4 are positioned in an area which reduces the driver's view towards the sides and rear from the cab. Rear wheel fenders 2 are attached to the driver's cab la by bolts on the underside of the fender. Additionally, support structures (not shown) under the fenders 2 are provided to stiffen the fender and support the weight of the warning signs and lights carried by the fenders 2.
Figures 2 and 3 are front and rear perspective views respectively of a fender support in accordance with the invention. Both figures show a rear wheel fender 2 and fender support 5 for attachment to an agricultural vehicle, such as an agricultural tractor.
Only the rear, or C-pillar 6a of the driver's cab is shown in figures 2 and 3.
Fender support 5 comprises two elements, a mounting element 5a and a support element 5b. Both elements are made out of polyurethane foam with an inner reinforced core also made of polyurethane. Alternatively, the fender support may comprise an alloy, or any other cast material, or fibre-reinforced plastics. Mounting element 5a is a curved element having two ends. One end is attachable to the C-pillar 6a of the driver's cab. The other end is attachable to a part of the outer, upper surface of rear wheel fender 2. Both ends are attachable to the Capillar 6a and fender 2 by fixing means such as screws. Figures 5a and 5b show the attachment of the fender support to the fender in greater detail.
Mounting element 5a provides a mounting surface for the attachment of a light 4 and/or warning sign 3. Warning sign 3 is provided with a mounting bracket 7 which is attached by screw means to mounting element 5a.
Supporting element 5b is positioned under mounting element 5a and extends from a central part of mounting element 5a to C-pillar 6a. It is attached to C-pillar 6a by fixing means such as nuts and bolts. The supporting element 5b may be an integral part of the mounting element 5a. Alternatively, the supporting element 5b may be a separate part which is attached to the mounting part 5a by screw or bolt means.
Use of the fender support 5 assists in the support and rigidity of the rear wheel fender 2. This negates the need for a complex support structure under the fender which in turn means the fender can be fitted closer to the rear wheel. This improves the driver's view to the rear and sides of the tractor. The fender support 5 also provides a mounting base for the attachment of lights, or warning signs. Since the light and/or warning sign is attached to the support 5 and not the fender directly, the weight of the light and/or warning sign is not entirely borne by the fender 2, but also by the C-pillar 6a. This means the fender support 5 provides the fender 2 with adequate rigidity.
Figure 4 shows an area Z towards the rear of the cab which is usually obstructed from the driver's view 8 by C-pillar 6a.
Fender support 5 is positioned within obscured area Z. The positioning of the fender support and any attached warning signs/lights in area Z means the driver's view from the cab is not
further impaired by positioning of the support outside of area Z. If warning sign 3 which is pivotably attached to fender support 5 is positioned outside of area Z in operating position, it may be pivoted into a park position within area Z as shown by dotted lines 3" to optimise the driver's view.
Figures 5 a and 5b show end views of the fender support 5 of figure 3 when facing in the direction of the driver's cab. In figure 5a one end of mounting element 5a is attached to fender 2 by screw means 8. In figures 5a and 5b only one screw means 8 is shown (whereas in figure 3 two screw means are shown). One or more apertures are made in fender 2 and screw means 8 are inserted directly through the underside of fender 2 to secure the fender support 5 to the fender 2.
In figure 5b, a support plate 9 is secured on the underside of the fender 2 by screw means 8. The support plate 9 increases the rigidity of the fender and increases the load bearing capacity of the fender 2.
