Description

SELF-PROPELLED BAGGAGE WITH CONTROL OF POSITION, WEIGHT AND
POSSIBLE TAMPERING
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a baggage, like a suitcase or similar, provided with advanced technical characteristics, which is of a substantially "intelligent" type with respect to movement and communication thereof. PRIOR ART AND PURPOSE OF THE INVENTION
Over time, suitcases and bags have been developed which adopt solutions that make them more comfortable for the user.
For some years now, kinds of baggage are known which are equipped with one or two couples of wheels, enabling them to be pulled rather than lifted, with considerable advantages to travellers who do not use baggage transportation services, which are rarer and rarer nowadays.
Moreover, it should be noted that, actually, the most important airports and railway stations have become larger and larger, thus becoming so complex that travellers are forced to long transits throughout such structures, from the entrance to the boarding gate or departure platform.
Finally, the security of stations and of public areas has become of primary importance, and temporarily leaving a baggage aside, without any indication, is regarded with comprehensible suspicion. For the same reasons, it is necessary to be sure that one's own baggage has not been tampered, both for a possible theft or the insertion of hazardous or anyway forbidden materials.
At last, a closer attention to energy consumption made provisions on baggage weight more stringent, thus causing considerable discomfort and higher costs to travellers who could not control the weight of their baggage.
Therefore, the need of moving, weighing and localizing one's own baggage, namely of having an almost total control over it, is felt more and more.
Hence, the purpose of this invention consists in providing a baggage which, besides the function of containing in the best possible conditions things necessary for the travel, may take advantage of the following peculiarities:
• autonomous movement, preferably controlled by a possibly wireless remote control, which may be operated by the user;
• a self-weighing function, with relevant means for displaying the weight and/or an alarm in the case the preset limit is exceeded, in order to respect the more and more stringent limits imposed by the airline companies;
• a self-localization function, by means of satellite-based position control system, such as GPS, or cellular-phone ones, by way of example based on presently existing GSM GPRS or HTMS networks, or on specific cellular network based, for example, on Bluetooth® repeaters, this function is made available to the owner from a remote location, for example by means of a simple call (or an SMS message) by a cellular phone or a palm device;
• a security and alarm function, which is activated in case of tampering or unauthorized opening, and which may preferably warn the baggage owner on a realtime basis.
The technical problem on which this invention is based is to realize a baggage able to implement the functions described above, in view of a use functionality clearly improved with respect to the prior state of the art.
Such a problem is solved by a self-propelled baggage with control of position, weight and possible tampering, as described and claimed below. DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention will be described below with reference to one preferred embodiment of the same, which is provided by way of example and without limitation, with reference to annexed drawings in which:
• figure 1 is an overall perspective view of the baggage according to this embodiment; and
• figure 2 is a perspective view of the bottom plate of the baggage of the previous figure.
With reference to figure 1, the baggage, which may be of any shape and size, according to the present embodiment, is of a suitcase type and is referred to as a whole by 1. It has a base and a top equipped with a handle 2.
At its base, baggage 1 comprises two couples of support wheels 3, respectively positioned in the proximity of the corners of its base.
The couples of wheels are identified as pertaining to the same short side, if present as in this case, or by the fact that they are mutually adjacent.
According to the embodiment described herein, a couple of wheels operate as driving wheels, connected with one or two electric motors 4 which are operated by a control system arranged in the base itself.
So, drive wheels and motors are motion means for the present baggage.
The other couple of wheels may operate as steering wheels, being connected with an appropriate actuator 5, which is also connected to the said control system.
It is clear that different arrangements may be anyway possible: one of the two couples may operate as driving and steering wheels, or such functions may be fulfilled by all four wheels. Arrangements with three functionally independent wheels are also possible.
With reference to figure 2, said base includes a plate 6, on which the bottom 7 of the suitcase rests. Plate 6 is rigid and provides support for installation of said motor 4 and said actuator 5.
Moreover, it comprises an electronic board 8 implementing the said control system, which is provided with means for wireless connection to a remote control unit.
Said remote control unit may have a single-hand joystick-type instruments, possibly implemented in a virtual way on a touch screen, through which it would be possible to send forward, backward, rightward and leftward motion commands and brake command, or it may have a grip-inclination sensitive gyroscopic-type instruments, by which it would be possible to give the same commands.
In particular, the desired motion characteristics are as follows:
a) reach a speed of 1.5 m/sec (approximately 6 km/h)
b) steer to right and left;
c) overcome slopes not exceeding 10%;
d) sense the presence of obstacles on its path, and brake to avoid impact on them.
The function described in (d) may be achieved by appropriate front and/or rear sensors 9, in order to prevent the baggage from hitting people and fixed obstacles.
The remote control unit could be constituted of a remote control that may be housed in the handle 2 of baggage 1, and extracted by means of a release button 10. Otherwise, a front pocket could be provided, with a rigid wicket.
Alternatively, the control system could be implemented by an appropriate software or application, which may be installed in a smart-type cellular phone, or a palm device, equipped with a wireless digital communication system, based for example on the Bluetooth® protocol, having an operating range of some tens of meters. Furthermore, easier remote control units could be provided:
• a first version of "go in front of me" type could be realized with a hand-held transmitter with dimensions smaller than a small cell phone, sensitive to the position of the hand and provided with inclination sensitive sensors; thus the transmitter may be inclined forward to make the baggage move forward, and inclined backward to make it brake and inclined rightward or leftward to make it steer to right or left;
• a second version of "follow-me" type could be realized with a pocket transmitter (of the same size as a lighter), which will be followed at a preset distance by the motorized baggage, that will stop in case the owner stops.
At the position of wheels 3 (or of the lifting handle 2), the baggage includes sensors apt to detect its weight; a small display near the handle may warn the user when present weight values are exceeded; the weight could also be transmitted to the remote control unit's display.
Furthermore, the baggage 1 may be equipped with a localizer 11 , in particular a satellite- based GPS-type unit (or the other ones above indicated), which may detect the coordinates of its position with an accuracy of about ten meters.
Such data may be transmitted to the remote control unit in terms of coordinates or distance.
Alternatively, the baggage 1 may be equipped with a cellular communication device, possibly provided with its own SIM card, to transmit the data relative to the baggage position to a preset phone number: i.e. the owner's phone number.
In this way, the owner may be informed about the baggage position and determine whether it could be the case of a theft, of a loss, or a delayed delivery, having a real-time information.
For example, during baggage claim operations in airport, the owner would be informed, on a real-time basis, of his/her baggage approaching the claim area.
In order to fulfil international air transport regulations, the cellular communication system is provided with proper sensors and relative managing software to turn off before taking off and autonomously turn on again after landing.
Moreover, the baggage 1 is provided with a security system against unauthorized opening: an acoustic alarm will be activated in the event of tampering (without entering the lock combination), and a tampering warning message will be sent to the owner's cellular phone and/or the remote control unit, together with baggage position coordinates.
As far as motors are concerned, they may be two 12V direct current electric motors, of approximately 50W power each.
Power will be supplied by two 12V lithium-ions batteries 12, arranged on said plate 6, each having approximately a 10 Ah capacity. Direction actuator 5 may be constituted of a pin-and-gear steering box, for solidity reasons, but it may be also removed and replaced by freely rotating front wheels, and an independent rotation control in rear drive motors. In the possible version with three wheels, the actuator 5 may be realized by a single wheel direction control.
Control boards, remote control unit and GPS localizer, and respective radio and GPS antennas, shall be housed and wired within the plate 6, which constitutes baggage's double bottom.
For final construction, high-strength mechanical materials (such as carbon fibres) will be used, for providing high mechanical strength, and advanced technology electric materials (motors and batteries), for providing high power and reduced weight.
In particular, lithium-ions batteries will comply with the restrictions imposed by international standards on the transportation of such batteries contained within electric and electronic apparatuses.
In order to meet additional and contingent requirements, an expert in the field may apply further changes and variations to the baggage described above, which are anyway all included in the scope of protection of this invention, as defined by the attached claims.
