Definitions
- the invention relates to an airbag arrangement in a dashboard body of a motor vehicle, said cushion being positioned, for example, to frontally protect an occupant of the vehicle installed next to the driver of the vehicle.
- the dashboard body is provided with a window which is closed at its upper face by a flap, and a firing channel fixed on the underside of the board body while surrounding the window.
- the firing channel has an upper face that matches the domed shape of the dashboard body, and a generally flat underside to which is attached a standardized type of cushioning module.
- the air bag When the air bag inflates, it crosses the firing channel to bear against the underside of the flap, causing the opening of the flap. The cushion then passes through the window of the dashboard body to deploy in the passenger compartment of the vehicle to protect the occupants.
- the window has a rectangular outline, and the flap is hinged around the transverse edge of this window which is furthest forward with respect to the direction of travel of the vehicle, that is to say which is closest to the windshield.
- the forces appearing during the opening are important because of the speed of deployment that is desired for the safety cushion, so that the mechanical strength of the restraining links is generally insufficient.
- the links tend to tear away from the body of the dashboard, which causes the degradation of the flap, and thereby presents a risk of debris projection to the occupants of the vehicle.
- the object of the invention is to propose a solution to overcome these disadvantages.
- the subject of the invention is a motor vehicle dashboard airbag arrangement, comprising a dashboard body having a window for the passage of an airbag, a shutter closing this window. being articulated on a transverse articulation edge of this window, a firing channel fixed on the lower face of the dashboard body and forming a frame surrounding the window, this firing channel having a flat lower face intended to receive a module of an airbag, characterized in that it comprises at least one link secured to the flap and the firing channel to constitute at least four portions of each retaining portion being secured to the flap and to the fire channel in zones distinct from the other portions to limit the opening of the flap, the four distinct retaining portions extending substantially parallel to each other.
- the firing channel has openings oriented radially relative to the window for communicating an inner face and an outer face of an edge of the firing channel, and in that said at least one link radially crosses at least one opening to be firmly retained at an outer face of the firing channel when opening the flap intervening subsequent to inflation of the safety cushion.
- the invention also relates to an arrangement as defined above, wherein the firing channel comprises at its lateral edges openings in the form of indentations, each having a neck opening into the upper face of the firing channel. and an opening body connected to the neck and having dimensions greater than those of the neck, the opening body being offset relative to the neck towards the hinge edge of the flap, and wherein said at least one link secured to the flap has a portion which passes radially at least one notch to be retained firmly at the outer face of the firing channel.
- the openings in the form of a notch or indentation opening into an upper or lower face of the firing channel facilitate the establishment of the link and allow in particular the use of a link forming a closed loop.
- the invention also relates to an arrangement as defined above, in which the firing channel comprises a lateral edge provided with two openings in the form of indentations and in which the link constitutes locally a loop traversing radially the firing channel. at the level of these two indentations being retained by the outer face portion of the firing channel located between the two indentations.
- the invention also relates to an arrangement as defined above, wherein the firing channel comprises an edge along the flap hinge edge, this edge being further provided with one or more openings in the form of notches opening into the lower face of the firing channel, and comprising at least one link secured to the flap and radially crossing the notch being retained at the outer face of the firing channel to form an articulation of the flap on the body of plank on board.
- the invention also relates to an arrangement as defined above, wherein the edge of the firing channel along the hinge edge of the flap comprises at least two notches, and a link forming locally a loop passing radially from the firing channel at two notches, being retained by the outer face portion of the firing channel located between these two notches to form an articulation of the flap on the dashboard body.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the arrangement according to the invention when the flap is open;
- Figure 2 is a side view of the arrangement according to the invention when the flap is open;
- Figure 3 is a detail view showing the indentations of the arrangement according to the invention devoid of links;
- Figure 4 is a detailed view showing the notches of the arrangement according to the invention when traversed by portions of links energized by the opening of the flap.
- the idea underlying the invention is to provide four portions of separate restraint links each attached to the flap and the body of the board to limit the opening of the flap in areas distinct from the other portions, while taking advantage of the channel firing to form solid anchors of these portions of restraining links in the dashboard body.
- the four portions of retaining links are arranged to extend approximately parallel to each other when they are under tension, that is to say when the flap is open, so as to ensure an even distribution of the forces tension in these different portions, when the flap is open.
- the portions of links as visible in Figures 1 and 2, are distinct from each other when they are energized. The anchors of these portions of restraint are thus distant from each other.
- the arrangement according to the invention generally identified by 1 is integrated in an instrument panel comprising a plank body generally marked by 2 having a rectangular window 3 for passing through a not shown safety cushion.
- a firing channel generally identified by 4 also having a generally rectangular internal contour is fixed on the lower face of the dashboard body 2 so as to surround the window 3.
- the firing channel also has an upper face which conforms to the shape curved body dashboard, and a generally flat bottom face on which is fixed a cushion module.
- the firing channel is therefore a separate part of the cushion module, of generally rectangular shape.
- the window 3 and the firing channel 4 define a rectangular outline with a front transverse edge 6 with respect to the direction of advance A of the vehicle, as well as a rear transverse edge 7 opposite the front edge 6.
- the two edges sides of this contour which are marked by 8 and 9 extend approximately parallel to the direction A.
- the window 3 is closed by a flap 10, also rectangular, having a front transverse edge 11, a rear transverse edge 12, and two lateral edges 13 and 14.
- the transverse front edge 11 of the flap is hinged to the front transverse edge 6 from the window, to open when the air bag inflates.
- the flap 10 comprises a wall 16 which extends in the extension of the plank body 2 when the flap is closed, and a plate 17 fixed to the lower face of this wall 16.
- the plate 17 has a substantially flat bottom face, and instead has a series of transverse ribs and longitudinal protruding from its upper face.
- the plate 17 is fixed to the wall 16 for example by vibration welding or the like, so that it is the protruding ridges of the ribs which are secured to the underside of the wall 16.
- a linear link generally identified by 18 is fixed to the flap 10 and to the dashboard body 2.
- This link comprises two lateral retaining portions 21 and 22 which connect the lateral edges 9 to 13, and two other side portions 23 and 24 which connect the side edges and 8 to 14 to limit the opening of the flap 10.
- the retaining link portions 21 and 23 are those that are closest to the front transverse edges, or hinge edges marked by 6 and 11.
- the retaining portions 22 and 24 are those that are closest to the rear transverse edges 7 and 12 constituting the opening edges of the flap.
- Each retaining portion has an end attached to the flap, and its other end fixed or secured to the firing channel that equips the dashboard body.
- this link 18 also includes a hinge portion 26 which passes through the transverse edges 6 and 11 of the window 3 and the flap 10 to constitute or strengthen the articulation of the flap 10 on the rest of the dashboard.
- the link 18 is fixed to the flap 10 being engaged between the transverse ribs of the plate 17, so that it is thus trapped between the body of the plate 17 and the wall 16 while being retained by the ribs separating these two elements.
- these ribs advantageously having appropriate shapes and dimensions to ensure firm restraint of this link.
- the link 18 extends from the lateral portion 22 to the lateral portion 24 while being engaged in a groove delimited by two transverse ribs of the plate 17.
- the two lateral portions 21 and 23 are also engaged between consecutive ribs of the plate 17, and they follow between the plate 17 and the wall 16 of the paths leading them to the hinge edge 11 of the flap to form hinge portions 26 of this link 18.
- the lateral edge 8 of the firing channel 4 comprises two openings 28 and 29 crossing this edge 8 radially with respect to an axis AX normal to the window 3 and centered thereon.
- Each opening 28, 29 is a notch which radially crosses the edge 8 of the firing channel 4 to put in communication an internal face with an external face of this edge 8 of the firing channel 4, and which also opens into the upper face. the firing channel, that is to say the face through which this firing channel is attached to the underside of the board body 2.
- the retaining portions 21 and 22 of the link 18 are fixed to the lateral edge 8 of the firing channel 4 by being respectively engaged in the indentation 29 and in the indentation 28, locally constituting a loop which passes through the edge 8. The portion this loop which joins the portions 21 and 22 is thus supported on the portion of the outer face of the edge 8 of the channel 4 which is located between the two notches 28 and 29.
- the retaining portions 23 and 24 of the link 18, which connect the lateral edges 13 and 9 are fixed to the dashboard by being engaged in two other notches 32 and 31 which pass radially through the edge 9 of the firing channel for place the inner face in communication with the outer face of this edge while opening on the upper face of the firing channel 4.
- each notch 28, 29 comprises on the one hand an opening body 33 of dimensions greater than the diameter of the link 18 and a collar 34 of dimensions very close to the diameter of the link 18, and by which the indentation 28 opens into the upper face 36 of the firing channel 4.
- each of the indentations 28, 29, the main opening 33 is offset towards the front of the vehicle, that is towards the hinge edge 6, with respect to the neck 34. offset allows to define in the upper part of each notch a spur or hook projection 38, oriented in the opposite direction to the transverse edge 6, that is to say the opposite of the direction 1.
- Each advance 38 is formed in the rigid material of the firing channel 4, and the link 18 bears against each advance when the flap 10 opens, this situation being represented in FIG. 4.
- the inner and outer edges of the indentations 28 and 29 are softened.
- Each of these edges 37 which corresponds to the connection of the internal surface delimited by an indentation and the inner or outer surface of the edge 8 of the firing channel 4 is softened to present a radius of curvature of the order of the radius or the diameter of the link instead of having a sharp edge profile.
- the indentations 31 and 32 of the edge 9 of the firing channel 4, which receive the lateral portions of the retaining links 23 and 24 have the same shapes and arrangements as the indentations 28 and 29, and they present the same benefits.
- the notches in which are engaged the retaining portions of the link 18 are made in the material of the firing channel 4 which has a greater mechanical strength than the dashboard body 2, so that they ensure a firm hold of the link 18 when opening the flap 10 without risk of tearing.
- the link 18 further comprises a hinge portion 26 constituted by a series of loops protruding from the hinge edge 11 of the flap 10 being regularly spaced from each other.
- each notch 42 is formed in the front edge 6 of the firing channel 4. and it has a generally straight shape oriented vertically and opening into the flat lower face of the firing channel 4.
- each loop of the hinge portion 26 of the link 18 surrounds a portion of the front edge 6 of the firing channel so as to bear on the portion of the face external of this channel which separates two consecutive notches.
- the notches ensure a firm hold of the link 18 through which the opening of the flap proceeds without risk of tearing or destruction of this component.
- the notches 42 opening into the lower face of the firing channel are generally straight. These notches may also have shapes of the same type as the indentations 28 and 29, having an opening body of large dimensions connected to a neck of dimensions close to or substantially less than the diameter of the link, this collar opening into the lower face the fire channel.
- the openings 42 ensure the maintenance of each strand 41 which is then retained vertically by the neck, which prevents it from falling down. under the effect of its own weight and that it leaves the opening.
- the installation of the flap 10 with the portions of lateral links and the hinge portions is advantageously performed prior to the attachment of the firing channel to the dashboard body 2.
- the link 18 is for example set up at the level of the upper face of the plate 17, between the ribs provided for this purpose, so as to form on the one hand the loops protruding from the side edges to form the link portions ensuring the retention of the flap, and secondly the loops exceeding the flange hinge edge to form the hinge of this flap.
- the ribs of the upper face of the plate 17 provide are sufficiently close to each other to maintain the link temporarily, simply by interlocking between the ribs.
- the plate 17 is then presented by the lower face of the firing channel to engage the loops of the link 18 forming the hinge portion 26 of this link, in the corresponding notches of the front edge 6 of the firing channel 4.
- the flap can be held in the open position above the opening 3 to pass the lateral loops of the link in the indentations of the lateral edges of the firing channel.
- the lateral loops can then be pulled outward so as to recover the additional length of these loops to place it outside the firing channel so that it does not risk disrupting the opening of the flap.
- the shutter is placed spontaneously in its closed position.
- the firing channel with the plate 17 can then be applied to the lower face of the dashboard body 2 to be fixed thereto, for example by a method of welding by vibration, or by any other suitable method.
- a link 18 which generally constitutes a single closed loop, constituting by its arrangement two lateral loops constituting the bases of the four retaining links 21-24, and several loops at the hinge edge.
- the invention applies equally well to a solution in which the link used is not necessarily a closed loop, and in the case where several links are used, so as to define the different portions of restraint and / or of joint.
