Definitions
- the present invention relates to methods for testing the hermetic sealing of packages and more particularly to a method for testing the hermetic sealing of packaging by subjecting the package to two or more cycles of moderate depressurization to cause stress on the packaging and a final step of depressurization at a high negative pressure to reveal possible failures and leaks in the gaskets.
- Mexican patent No. 9708328 describes a method and apparatus for evaluating the hermetic sealing of various packages, which combines a negative (empty) pressure which seeks to leave the package with a positive (weights) which accelerates the operation.
- the packages to be evaluated are placed in an apparatus comprising a vacuum chamber with a base on which evaluation poles are mounted under which the packages are placed, which are subjected to a negative pressure (vacuum) and inflated by lifting the posts that have weights on top that exert another pressure on the packages to accelerate the exit of the air through any leak.
- the main disadvantage of the method described in Mexican Patent No. 9708328 and of the aforementioned methods comprises that airtight gaskets are tested against leaks when they are in optimal conditions, that is, freshly sealed and before being subjected to any type of condition. of stress, such as during transport, constant atmospheric pressure changes when packing between cities of different altitude, frictions against other packages or elements, etc. are transported. and it is during these stress conditions when they arise Material and sealing seams failures that could not be detected during tightness tests and may cause the gasket to lose its tightness.
- the applicant developed a method to test the tightness of packages, which subjects them to one or more cycles of moderate depressurization, to cause stress, and to a final depressurization step at a high negative pressure to release the stresses or deformations in the material or seams or seams and discover failures in the material and / or seams that would not be possible to discover with traditional test methods.
- the method includes one or more initial moderate pressurization cycles, it is possible to perform a simulation of behavior during the transit or transport of the package (s), verifying their tightness by generating various vacuum pressures within of a sealed chamber, during predetermined periods of time for each change of vacuum pressure, thus simulating the actual behavior of the product in its transit at different heights above sea level to verify in this way that there are no air leaks in the packages for each vacuum pressure and to observe the behavior of the package or several packages in the variation of heights with respect to the sea level, and its physical accommodations in a certain area, (inside the chamber); which allows to see the behavior of several packages within containers in their transit to final destination by varying the vacuum pressure with durations of different times in the cycles.
- It is therefore a main objective of the present invention to provide a method for testing the hermetic sealing of packages comprising subjecting the package to two or more cycles of moderate depressurization to cause stress in the package and a final depressurization step at a high negative pressure to reveal possible failures and leaks in the gaskets.
- the method for testing the hermetic sealing of packages of the present invention comprises, in a preferred preferred stage thereof, the steps of:
- a) provide a sealed chamber having means to generate a negative pressure (vacuum pressure) within the chamber;
- the package (s) inside the sealed chamber b) fix the package (s) inside the sealed chamber; c) subjecting one or more sealed gaskets to one or more depressurization-pressurization cycles comprising subjecting the gasket (s) to a vacuum pressure and returning to atmospheric pressure, within said sealed chamber, and recording the maximum and minimum height reference values obtained during the one or more cycles, where preferably the vacuum pressure for each cycle can be from 50 mmhg to 220 mmhg.
- the number of cycles is preferably within a range of 1 to 50, and the time
- the duration of each cycle, at vacuum pressure can vary preferably from a time of 1 second to a maximum of 30 seconds, although any expert in the field can suggest any number of cycles depending on the characteristics of the package (s) test, or that each cycle has a longer duration depending on the characteristics of the sealed package (s) to be tested;
- the height measurement of the packages in stages c) and d) can be carried out by any suitable means, such as electronic, mechanical or optical measurement means, such as visual observation, measurement by means of ruler, measurement by means of laser, among others.
- Stage c) may have one or more depressurization-pressurization cycles, each of which may have different vacuum pressures less than atmospheric and different duration times, thus being able to exist multiple combinations of numbers of cycles, pressures and times depending on The packaging test needs.
- step c) although it was mentioned that the vacuum pressure is in a range of preferably 80 to 150 mmhg, an expert in the field could suggest any other range of vacuum pressures, provided that when the vacuum pressure used in stage c) is less than or equal to the minimum pressure reached during the one or more depressurization-pressurization cycles reached during stage c).
- the duration of the depressurization-pressurization cycle in stage d) is between 1 to 30 seconds, an expert in the field could suggest an even longer duration depending on the test needs.
- step c) a single height measurement of the ambient pressure package (s) is performed at the end of the depressurization-pressurization cycle (s) and a single height measurement of the package (s) in the stage d) at the end of the depressurization-pressurization cycle at ambient pressure in order to assess the condition of the package.
- Said second mode is useful, for example, to simulate the behavior of one or more packages during the transit or transport of the package (s), during predetermined periods of time for each vacuum pressure change, thus simulating the actual behavior of the product in its transit to different heights above sea level to verify in this way that there are no air leaks in the packages for each vacuum pressure and to observe the behavior of the package or several packages in the variation of heights with respect to sea level, and their accommodations physicists in a certain area, (inside the chamber), which allows you to see the behavior of several packages within containers in their transit to final destination by varying the vacuum pressure with different duration times in the cycles.
- the vacuum chamber that can be used with the method of the present invention can be any suitable vacuum chamber that allows the measurement of the height of one or more packages inside, by any suitable means, such as measuring means mechanical or optical electronics, such as visual observation, ruler measurement, laser measurement, among others.
- the vacuum chamber may have one or more internal compartments that can simulate package storage containers in order to simulate their behavior with respect to packaging at various pressures.
