Abstract

 液晶表示パネル39に含まれる多層型光学部材ユニットUTは、出射側Tから受光側Nに向かって、第1屈折層11、集光層23、および反射偏光層22、を含む。

Description

表示パネルおよび表示装置
 本発明は、例えば液晶表示パネルのような表示パネル、および、その表示パネルを搭載する表示装置(液晶表示装置等)に関する。
 非発光型の液晶表示パネルを搭載する液晶表示装置では、通常、その液晶表示パネルに対して、光を供給するバックライトユニット(照明装置)も搭載される。バックライトユニットにおける光源には、種々の種類が存在する。例えば、LED(Light Emitting Diode)および蛍光管といった光源が一例として挙げられる。
 そして、光源からの光は、液晶表示パネルに適した面状光になるように、種々の光学部材を透過する。例えば、特許文献1の液晶表示装置の場合、光源の光は、スペーサーを介して積層された光学部材を透過して液晶表示パネルに到達する。

 しかしながら、これら複数の光学部材(この光学部材の集合体を光学部材ユニットと称する)では、スペーサーを介して、積層するため、空気層が介在する。その上、空気層を挟み込む層(光学部材)は、層全体で密着していないため、撓みやすい。そのため、この光学部材の撓みに起因して、液晶表示パネルに入射する面状光の品質が劣化しやすい(要は、面状光に光量ムラ等が含まれやすい)。
 本発明は、上記問題点を鑑み、撓みにくい光学部材を複数搭載することで、高品質な面状光を出射可能な表示パネル、およびその表示パネルを搭載した表示装置を提供することを目的とする。
 表示パネルは、受けた光を透過させて外部に出射させることで、画像を表示する。ここで、表示パネルにおいて、光を受ける側を受光側、受光側の反対側を出射側とする。この表示パネルでは、受光側には、外部に向かって進行する光の進行を変化させる多層型光学部材ユニットが含まれており、その多層型光学部材ユニットは、各層全体を密着させて積層させており、かつ、出射側から受光側に向かって、光を屈折させる第1屈折層、光を集光させる集光層、および光を反射させつつ偏光させる反射偏光層、を少なくとも含む。
 このようになっていると、表示パネルが光を受けた場合、その光は、出射するまでの間に、反射偏光層、集光層、第1屈折層の順で、各層を透過する。この透過の過程で、光は光量ムラを解消すると同時に輝度向上を図る。さらに、多層型光学部材ユニットは、各層全体を密着させて積層させているので、層間に空気層は介在せず、全体としての強度が増し、各層が撓まない。そのため、各層の撓みに起因した光量ムラ等は抑えられる。つまり、表示パネルに入射した光は、画像表示に適した光へと変えられている。
 なお、第1屈折層は、集光層の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有すると望ましい。
 また、多層型光学部材ユニットでは、集光層と反射偏光層との間に、光を屈折させる第2屈折層が介在してもよい。なお、第2屈折層は、集光層の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有すると望ましい。
 また、多層型光学部材ユニットは、反射偏光層よりも受光側に、光を拡散させる拡散層を含むと望ましい。さらに、多層型光学部材ユニットでは、反射偏光層と拡散層との間に、光を屈折させる第3屈折層が介在すると望ましく、特に、この第3屈折層は、拡散層の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有すると望ましい。
 なお、以上の表示パネルと、その表示パネルに対して、光を供給する照明装置と、を含む表示装置も本発明といえる。また、このような表示装置を含むテレビ受像装置も本発明といえる。
 本発明によると、表示パネルに含まれる多層型光学部材ユニットが、空気層を含まない上に撓みにくいので、空気や各層の撓みに起因して、多層型光学部材ユニットからの出射光に、劣化が起きにくい。

 [実施の形態1]
 実施の一形態について、図面に基づいて説明すれば、以下の通りである。なお、便宜上、ハッチングや部材符号等を省略する場合もあるが、かかる場合、他の図面を参照するものとする。
 図6は、液晶表示装置(表示装置)69を搭載する液晶テレビ89である。なお、このような液晶テレビ89は、テレビ放送信号を受信して画像を映すことから、テレビ受像装置といえる。図5は、液晶表示装置を示す分解斜視図である。この図に示すように、液晶表示装置69は、液晶表示パネル39と、この液晶表示パネル39に対して光を供給するバックライトユニット(照明装置)49と、これらを挟み込むハウジングHG(表ハウジングHG1・裏ハウジングHG2)と、を含む。
 液晶表示パネル39は、TFT(Thin Film Transistor)等のスイッチング素子を含むアクティブマトリックス基板31と、このアクティブマトリックス基板31に対向する対向基板32とをシール材(不図示)で貼り合わせる。そして、両基板31・32の隙間に液晶33が注入される(後述の図1参照)。そして、この液晶表示パネル39は、液晶分子33の傾きに起因する透過率の変化を利用して、画像を表示する。
 なお、液晶表示パネル39は、バックライトユニット49からの光を受ける側(受光側N)であるアクティブマトリックス基板31の表面、および、画像表示のために光を出射する側(出射側T)である対向基板32の表面に、種々の光学部材を取り付けている。それらについての詳細は後述する。
 次に、液晶表示パネル39の直下に位置するバックライトユニット49について説明する。バックライトユニット49は、LEDモジュール(発光モジュール)MJ、バックライトシャーシ45、大判反射シート46、を含む。
 LEDモジュールMJは、図5の分解斜視図に示すように、実装基板41、LED(Light Emitting Diode)42、レンズ43、および内蔵反射シート44を含む。
 実装基板41は、板状かつ矩形状の基板であり、実装面41U上に、複数の電極(不図示)を並べる。そして、これらの電極上に、発光素子であるLED42が取り付けられる。なお、実装基板41における実装面41Uには、保護膜となるレジスト膜(不図示)が成膜される。このレジスト膜は、特に限定されるものではないが、反射性を有する白色であると望ましい。なぜなら、レジスト膜に光が入射したとしても、その光はレジスト膜で反射して外部に向かおうとするので、実装基板41による光の吸収という光量ムラの原因が解消するためである。
 LED42は、光源であり、実装基板41の電極を介した電流によって発光する。そして、LED42の種類は多々あり、以下のようなLED42が挙げられる。例えば、LED42は、青色発光のLEDチップ(発光チップ)と、そのLEDチップからの光を受けて、黄色光を蛍光発光する蛍光体と、を含むものが挙げられる(なお、LEDチップの個数は特に限定されない)。このようなLED42は、青色発光のLEDチップからの光と蛍光発光する光とで白色光を生成する。
 ただし、LED42に内蔵される蛍光体は、黄色光を蛍光発光する蛍光体に限らない。例えば、LED42は、青色発光のLEDチップと、そのLEDチップからの光を受けて、緑色光および赤色光を蛍光発光する蛍光体と、を含み、LEDチップからの青色光と蛍光発光する光(緑色光・赤色光)とで白色光を生成してもよい。
 また、LED42に内蔵されるLEDチップは、青色発光のものに限られない。例えば、LED42は、赤色発光の赤色LEDチップと、青色発光の青色LEDチップと、青色LEDチップからの光を受けて、緑色光を蛍光発光する蛍光体と、を含んでいてもよい。なぜなら、このようなLED42であれば、赤色LEDチップからの赤色光と、青色LEDチップからの青色光と、蛍光発光する緑色光とで白色光を生成できるためである。
 また、全く蛍光体を含まないLED42であってもよい。例えば、赤色発光の赤色LEDチップと、緑色発光の緑色LEDチップと、青色発光の青色LEDチップと、を含み、全てのLEDチップからの光で白色光を生成するLED42であってもよい。
 なお、図5に示されるバックライトユニット49では、1枚の実装基板41に5個のLED42を列状に実装した比較的短い実装基板41と、1枚の実装基板41に8個のLED42を列状に実装した比較的長い実装基板41と、が搭載される。
 特に、2種類の実装基板41は、5個のLED42の列と8個のLED42の列とを13個にするように並び、さらに、13個のLED42の並ぶ方向に対して、交差(直交等)する方向にも、2種類の実装基板41は並ぶ。これにより、LED42はマトリックス状に配置され、面状光を発する(便宜上、異種の実装基板41の並ぶ方向をX方向、同種の実装基板41の並ぶ方向をY方向とし、このX方向とY方向とに交差する方向をZ方向とする)。
 なお、X方向に並ぶ13個のLED42は、電気的に直列接続され、さらに、この直列につながった13個のLED42は、Y方向に沿って隣り合う別の13個の直列接続されたLED42と電気的に並列に接続される。そして、これらマトリックス状に並ぶLED42は、並列駆動される。
 レンズ43は、LED42からの光を受け、その光を透過(出射)させる。詳説すると、レンズ43は、レンズ面の背面(受光面)側にLED42を収容可能な収容窪みDHを有し、その収容窪みDHとLED42との位置を合わせつつ、LED42に覆い被さる(後述の図4A参照)。すると、レンズ43の内部に、LED42が埋め込まれ、LED42からの光が、確実に、レンズ43内部に供給される。そして、その供給された光の大部分が、レンズ面を介して外部に出射する。
 内蔵反射シート44は、レンズ43と実装基板41との間に介在する。そして、この内蔵反射シート44は、後述の大判反射シート46に形成されたレンズ43を通過させるための通過開孔46Hから実装基板41の実装面41Uの露出を防ぐ。
 詳説すると、大判反射シート46は、レンズ43を自身の反射面46Uに露出させるために、レンズ43の外径よりも大きな通過開孔46Hを含む。すると、レンズ43が大判反射シート46の反射面46Uに露出した場合、レンズ43の外縁と通過開孔46Hの内縁との間に隙間が生じ、その隙間から、実装基板41の実装面41Uが露出するおそれがある。そこで、内蔵反射シート44は、レンズ43の外縁を縁取るような形、例えば図5に示すような輪状を有する。
 バックライトシャーシ45は、図5に示すように、例えば箱状の部材で、底面45BにLEDモジュールMJを敷き詰めることで、それら複数のLEDモジュールMJを収容する。なお、バックライトシャーシ45の底面45BとLEDモジュールMJの実装基板41とは、不図示のリベットを介して接続される。
 大判反射シート46は、反射面46Uを有する光学シートで、マトリックス配置された複数のLEDモジュールMJに、反射面46Uの裏面を向けて覆い被さる。ただし、大判反射シート46は、LEDモジュールMJのレンズ43の位置に合わせた通過開孔46Hを含み、反射面46Uからレンズ43を露出させる(なお、上述のリベットおよび支持ピンを露出させるための開孔があるとよい)。
 すると、レンズ43から出射する光の一部が、バックライトシャーシ45の底面45B側に向かって進行したとしても、大判反射シート46の反射面46Uによって反射し、その底面45Bから乖離するように進行する。したがって、大判反射シート46が存在することで、LED42の光は損失することなく、反射面46Uに対向した液晶表示パネル39に向かう。
 ここで、液晶表示パネル39の断面図である図1を参照しながら説明する。図1に示すように、液晶表示パネル39では、アクティブマトリックス基板31の表面および対向基板32の表面に、粘着層34が形成され、その粘着層34に対して、TAC(トリアセチルセルロース)フィルム35で挟まれた偏光フィルム(ポリビニルアルコールフィルム;PVAフィルム)36が取り付けられる。すなわち、TACフィルム35で両面を保護された偏光フィルム36が、アクティブマトリックス基板31の表面および対向基板32の表面に取り付けられる(なお、TACフィルム35と偏光フィルム36とでは、向かい合う面同士全体が密着している)。
 そして、この2つの偏光フィルム36によって、バックライトユニット49からの光の特定の偏光成分のみが、液晶表示パネル39を透過し、画像としてユーザに認識される。なお、液晶表示パネル39の最表面となるTACフィルム35には、傷防止用のコート層37が形成されるとよい。
 また、液晶表示パネル39は、受光側Nに、積層した光学部材で形成された多層型光学部材ユニットUTを含む。この多層型光学部材ユニットUTは、第1屈折層11、集光層23、反射偏光層22、および拡散層21を含む。なお、多層型光学部材ユニットUTでは、出射側Tから受光側Nに向かって、第1屈折層11、集光層23、反射偏光層22、拡散層21、が順に積み重なる。すなわち、拡散層21が、最も外側(多層型光学部材ユニットUTにて、最も、アクティブマトリックス基板31から乖離する側) に配置されており、直接、バックライトユニット49からの光を受ける。
 拡散層21は、受けた光を拡散させる層であり、例えば、アクリル系樹脂またはシリコン系樹脂で形成される拡散ビーズ21Bを含む樹脂(例えば、ポリエチレンテレフタレートまたはポリカーボネート)の層である。なお、樹脂層(ベース層)に、対して拡散ビーズ21Bを含ませる方法は、多々あり、例えば、紫外線硬化樹脂または熱硬化樹脂で、拡散ビーズを、ベース層に塗布する方法が挙げられる。
 反射偏光層22は、受けた光を反射させるとともに偏光させる層であり、例えば、ポリエチレンテレフタレートの多層膜(例えば、住友3M社製のDBEFシリーズ)が挙げられる。ただし、反射偏光層22は、ポリエチレンテレフタレートの多層膜に限定されるものではなく、例えば、コレスティック液晶層、または、ワイヤーグリッド偏光子(ポリエチレンテレフタレート製の基材に、アルミニウム等の反射層を200nm以下のピッチで、線状に並べた部材)であってもかまわない。なお、反射偏光層22と拡散層21とでは、向かい合う面同士全体が密着(接着)している。
 集光層23は、光を集光させることで輝度を向上させる層であり、例えば、三角プリズムを並列させたプリズムシートが挙げられる。ただし、集光層23は、プリズムシートに限定されるものではなく、例えば、レンチキュラーレンズ、マイクロレンズ、ヘキサゴナルレンズ、または、ピラミッドレンズ等の集光可能な形状を有するシートであってもかまわない。
 なお、このような集光可能な形状を有するシートは、ポリエチレンテレフタレート等を基材とし、その基材に集光可能な形状部分を紫外線硬化樹脂で形成されていてもよい。また、一般的な樹脂(ポリカーボネート等)を押出成型することで、全体で一括的に、集光可能な形状を有するシートが形成されていてもよい。
 なお、集光層23と反射偏光層22とでは、向かい合う面同士全体が密着している。さらに、集光層23は拡散層21とともに、反射偏光層22を挟み込んでいる。
 第1屈折層11は、集光層23に重なる層であり、アクティブマトリックス基板31に取り付けられた偏光フィルム36を保護するTACフィルム35と集光層23とに挟まれる樹脂の層である(なお、TACフィルム35と第1屈折層11とでは、向かい合う面同士全体が密着しており、第1屈折層11と集光層23とでは、向かい合う面同士全体が密着している)。
 詳説すると、第1屈折層11は、集光層23の凹凸面(例えば、プリズムの並列する面)を覆うことで、その凹凸面を平担化する役割を果たす。つまり、多層型光学部材ユニットUTが、アクティブマトリックス基板31に取り付けられた最外のTACフィルム35に安定的に取り付けられるように、第1屈折層11は、集光層23の凹凸を平担化する。
 また、この第1屈折層11を形成する樹脂は、集光層23を形成する樹脂を形成する樹脂よりも低い屈折率を有すると望ましい。なぜなら、図1の拡大図に示すように、集光層23からの光(実線矢印参照)が第1屈折層11に入射した場合、スネルの法則により、入射角よりも屈折角のほうが大きくなり、集光層23からの光が、第1屈折層11にて一層アクティブマトリックス基板31の法線方向に近づくようになるためである(要は、集光層23を透過する光が、一層、集光するためである)。
 したがって、例えば、集光層23の主材がポリカーボネートの場合、そのポリカーボネートの有する屈折率1.5程度よりも低い樹脂であれば、第1屈折層11の材質は、特に限定されない(要は、第1屈折層11の屈折率N1は、1.0を超え1.5未満であるとよい)。
 そして、以上のような多層型光学部材ユニットUTが、液晶表示パネル39に含まれていると(別表現すると、TACフィルム35で両面を保護された偏光フィルム36に挟まれた基板31・32の受光側Nに、多層型光学部材ユニットUTが取り付けられていると)、以下のようになる。
 すなわち、LEDモジュールMJから発せられる光および大判反射シート46Uからの反射光が、大判反射シート46Uに重なる拡散層21、および、その拡散層21に重なる反射偏光層22を透過する過程で、多重反射を繰り返し、明暗差を無くした面状光になる(なお、反射偏光層22によって、透過光が増量する)。
 さらに、この面状光は、反射偏光層22を経た後に、集光層23を透過する過程で、アクティブマトリックス基板31に対する法線方向に近づくので、液晶表示パネル39における輝度およびコントラストが増大する。つまり、多層型光学部材ユニットUTは、出射側Tから受光側Nに向かって、第1屈折層11、集光層23、および反射偏光層22、を含んでいれば、マトリックス配置されたLED42からの光(面状光)は、多層型光学部材ユニットUTを通過することで、光量ムラを抑えた高輝度の光になって、アクティブマトリックス基板31に到達する。
 その結果、液晶表示パネル39に映し出される画像の品質も向上する(要は、液晶表示パネル39における輝度およびコントラストの増大のためには、多層型光学部材ユニットUTにおいて、第1屈折層11、集光層23、および反射偏光層22が特に必要である)。
 その上、多層型光学部材ユニットUTは、各層(11、23、22、21)全体を密着させることで一体化し、さらに、その多層型光学部材ユニットUTは、アクティブマトリックス基板31に取り付けられた偏光フィルム36を保護するTACフィルム35に密着している。すなわち、拡散層21と反射偏光層22とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着し、反射偏光層22と集光層23とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着し、さらに、集光層23と第1屈折層11とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着し、第1屈折層11とTACフィルム35とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着する。
 このようになっていると、各層(11、23、22、21)が一体化することで多層型光学部材ユニットUTとしての強度が増し、ひいては、各層(11、23、22、21)が撓まなくなる。そのため、各層(11、23、22、21)の撓みに起因した光量ムラが抑えられる。また、各層(11、23、22、21)が密着していることで、層間に、ゴミや塵と言った異物が混入することもない。したがって、この液晶表示パネル39が長期間使用されたとしても、異物に起因した画質劣化が起きない。
 なお、以上では、多層型光学部材ユニットUTには、拡散層21、反射偏光層22、集光層23の他に、第1屈折層11が含まれ、その第1屈折層11は、集光層23とアクティブマトリックス基板31から最も乖離したTACフィルム35との間に介在していた。しかし、多層型光学部材ユニットUTには、他の層が含まれていてもかまわない。
 例えば、図2の断面図に示すように、集光層23と反射偏光層22との間に、光を屈折させる第2屈折層12が介在してもよい。特に、第2屈折層12と、集光層23とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着し、第2屈折層12と反射偏光層22とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着するとよい。このようになっていると、上述同様に、多層型光学部材ユニットUTが一体化して、各層(11、23、12、22、21)の撓みが防止され、さらに、層間への異物侵入も防止される。
 また、第2屈折層12は、集光層23の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有すると望ましい。このようになっていると、図2の拡大図に示すように、第2屈折層12からの光(実線矢印参照)が集光層23に入射した場合、スネルの法則により、入射角よりも屈折角のほうが小さくなり、第2屈折層12からの光が、集光層23におけるプリズムのプリズム面に対して比較的大きな入射角で到達する。そのため、プリズム面を透過する光がその入射角よりも大きな屈折角を有しながら進行し、アクティブマトリックス基板31の法線方向に近づきやすくなる。
 また、多層型光学部材ユニットUTは、反射偏光層22よりも受光側Nに、光を拡散させる拡散層21を含んでいるが、図3の断面図に示すように、反射偏光層22と拡散層21との間に、光を屈折させる第3屈折層13が介在してもよい。特に、第3屈折層13と、反射偏光層22とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着し、第3屈折層13と拡散層21とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着するとよい。このようになっていると、上述同様に、多層型光学部材ユニットUTが一体化して、各層(11、23、12、22、13、21)の撓みが防止され、さらに、層間への異物侵入も防止される。
 なお、第3屈折層13は、拡散層21の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有すると望ましい。なぜなら、図3の拡大図に示すように、拡散層21からの光(実線矢印参照)が第3屈折層13に入射した場合、スネルの法則により、入射角よりも屈折角のほうが大きくなり、拡散層21からの光が、より拡散しつつ、反射偏光層22に到達するためである。
 [その他の実施の形態]
 なお、本発明は上記の実施の形態に限定されず、本発明の趣旨を逸脱しない範囲で、種々の変更が可能である。
 例えば、以上では、多層型光学部材ユニットUTに含まれる各層が、粘着性を有していた。そのため、多層型光学部材ユニットUTにおける層間の密着(接続)には、特別な粘着部材は不要であった。しかしながら、これに限定されるものではない。すなわち、多層型光学部材ユニットUTにおける層が、粘着性を有していない場合、層間に透過性の粘着層が介在してもかまわない。なお、粘着層が層間に介在する場合、その粘着層と層とにおいて、向かい合い面同士の全体が密着していると望ましいことはいうまでもない。
 また、全ての層間に粘着層が介在している必要はなく、粘着性を有さない層に対してのみ、粘着層が配置されていればよい。要は、多層型光学部材ユニットUTでは、各層全体を密着できるようになっていれば、層同士の接続は、層の有する粘着性に起因してもよいし、層間に介在する粘着層に起因してもよい。
 また、以上では、バックライトユニット49では、図4Aの部分断面図に示すように、LED42の光がレンズ43を介して出射、拡散層21に到達していた。しかし、レンズ43は、必須ではない。すなわち、図4Bの部分断面図に示すように、LED42の光が、直接、拡散層21に到達してもかまわない。また、光源もLED42に限らず、図4Cの部分断面図に示すように、蛍光管FBであってもかまわない。
 また、以上では、光源が、液晶表示パネル39の直下に並ぶ“直下型”方式であったが、これに限定されるものではない。例えば、液晶表示パネル39のサイドに光源が配置する“サイドエッジ型”方式の光源であってもかまわない。
 本発明の表示パネルは、テレビ受像装置等に備えられる表示装置に適用可能である。

Claims (9)

  1.  受けた光を透過させて外部に出射させることで、画像を表示する表示パネルにあって、
     上記の光を受ける側を受光側、上記受光側の反対側を出射側とすると、
     上記受光側には、上記の外部に向かって進行する光の進行を変化させる多層型光学部材ユニットが含まれており、
     上記多層型光学部材ユニットは、各層全体を密着させて積層させており、かつ、上記出射側から上記受光側に向かって、光を屈折させる第1屈折層、光を集光させる集光層、および光を反射させつつ偏光させる反射偏光層、を少なくとも含む表示パネル。
  2.  上記第1屈折層は、上記集光層の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有する請求項1に記載の表示パネル。
  3.  上記集光層と上記反射偏光層との間に、光を屈折させる第2屈折層が介在する請求項2に記載の表示パネル。
  4.  上記第2屈折層は、上記集光層の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有する請求項3に記載の表示パネル。
  5.  上記多層型光学部材ユニットは、上記反射偏光層よりも上記受光側に、光を拡散させる拡散層を含む請求項1~4のいずれか1項に記載の表示パネル。
  6.  上記反射偏光層と上記拡散層との間に、光を屈折させる第3屈折層が介在する請求項5に記載の表示パネル。
  7.  上記第3屈折層は、上記拡散層の材質の有する屈折率よりも低い屈折率を有する請求項6に記載の表示パネル。
  8.  請求項1~7のいずれか1項に記載の表示パネルと、
     上記表示パネルに対して、光を供給する照明装置と、
    を含む表示装置。
  9.  請求項8に記載の表示装置を含むテレビ受像装置。
