Definitions
- Present invention concerns a mixture intended for single-step modification of acidic papers, and a method of using the mixture.
- a disadvantage of the so far deacidification methods is the fact that they are performed in several steps which is finally the reason why they are not suitable for all paper kinds.
- the aim of the present invention is to strengthen the physical-chemical properties of acidic papers especially, the increase in the strength and strengthening of their stability against the ageing.
- a mixture for single-step modification of acidic papers according to the present invention comprises a deacidification solution formed by a solution of magnesium hydrogen carbonate having a concentration of 0,08 to 0,12 mol/dm 3 and a solution of calcium hydrogen carbonate having a concentration of 0,008 to 0,012 mol/dm 3 in a ratio of 0,8:1 to 1 ,2:1.
- the mixture consists further of potato starch in an amount of 12 to 18 g per 1 dm 3 of the deacidification solution and potassium iodide in an amount of 1 ,2 to 1 ,8 g per 1 dm 3 of the deacidification solution.
- Mixture for single-step modification of acidic papers is prepared in such a way that to the deacidification solution, prepared by mixing together magnesium hydrogen carbonate solution and calcium hydrogen carbonate solution, potato starch is added and after 30 minutes of mixing at the latest potassium iodide is added.
- Method of using the mixture for modification of acidic papers according to the present invention consists in that the acidic papers are in intervals of 15 to 25 seconds successively immersed into the modification mixture so that each paper is immersed for 17 to 25 minutes. Subsequently, the papers are removed at 15 to 25 seconds intervals from the modification mixture and then freely hung to dry and then they are to be stretched out under load and aged in a chamber at a temperature of 70 to 85 °C and 65 % of relative humidity for 56 days at most.
- the advantage of the invention is that the papers are immersed in the solution only once, while their deacidification, strengthening and stabilization occurs, prolonging significantly their durability and thereby also their lifetime.
- the main advantage of the mixture is the fact that although the mixture belongs to aqueous deacidifications it may be used also for books.
- Paper NOVO(E), pre-aged, wood-pulp paper filled with aluminium sulphate, having basis weight of 90 g/m 2 and pH 5,5 , produced in Switzerland of the composition of 50 to 65 % of wood pulp, 25 to 35 % of bleached sulphite pulp and 12 to 15 % of kaolin.
- the document "Rules of organization” (O) dated on the year 1978, wood pulp, pre-aged paper having basis weight of 70 g/m 2 and pH 4,7.
- Historical journal (H) from the year 1900, wood pulp, pre-aged, having basis weight of 90 g/m 2 and pH 4,7.
- Example 8 Preparation of the modification solution as well as modification procedure was the same as in Example 7 with the difference that the ageing time was 28 days.
- modification solution 31 g of potato starch (empresol N) were added to 2 I of de-acidification solution, prepared by mixing together a solution of magnesium hydrogen carbonate of a concentration of 0,11 mol/dm 3 and a solution of calcium hydrogen carbonate of a concentration of 0,01 mol/dm 3 in a ratio of 1 ,1 :1. After 30 minutes of mixing, 3,2 g of potassium iodide were added and after stirring it up the modification mixture was used immediately.
- Mixture according to the present invention can be utilised for modification of archival paper carriers, which occur in library collections, in archives, museums and galleries.
