Definitions
- the present invention is directed to a thermoplastic mask holding frame, specifically for the immobilization of a patient's head, which is suitable both for use in the portable coil of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) device and in an apparatus of computed tomography (CT).
- NMR nuclear magnetic resonance
- CT computed tomography
- CT computed tomography
- NMR nuclear magnetic resonance
- the present invention describes a thermoplastic mask holding frame for magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography that solves the problems described. Thanks to the fact that the support portion of the head is narrower than usual since the means for anchoring the mask with the frame are significantly less bulky than the existing ones, the frame of the invention allows its insertion into the portable coil of a nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus.
- thermoplastic mask holding frame suitable for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and computed tomography (CT) is described, which is formed by a first support portion for the upper part of the the patient's back and a second support portion to hold the patient's head in an upright position.
- both support portions comprise means for anchoring the thermoplastic mask, the anchoring means of the second support portion being arranged so that they hold the Patient's head behind his head.
- this phrase refers not only to the area behind the patient's own head, but also to his neck (in general, the entire skull), in contrast to the current immobilization devices where the thermoplastic mask It is fixed to the frame on the sides of the patient's head, perpendicular to the frame. In this way, at changing the anchoring zone of the thermoplastic mask is better immobilize the patient's head, especially against lateral movements.
- this change in the anchor zone of the thermoplastic mask allows the width of the second support portion to be reduced, which in turn allows its introduction into the portable coil of a nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus. In this way, it is possible to sequentially take images of the patient's head by means of CT and MRI without modifying the position of the patient's head, which at all times will be a natural upright position.
- the width of this second support portion is less than 20 cm., More preferably less than 17 cm. With respect to its length, it will preferably be between 25 cm. and 30 cm
- the anchoring means of the thermoplastic mask can be any as long as they achieve a suitable anchor and occupy a space sufficiently reduced to allow the introduction of the fixing frame with the thermoplastic mask in the portable coil of an NMR apparatus.
- the anchoring means of the thermoplastic mask have the form of grooves arranged on the sides or the edge of the frame, both in the area of the first and the second support portion , which allow the introduction of edges of the thermoplastic mask, approximately as in a "dovetail" mechanism.
- the second support portion comprises means for fixing a headrest in order to improve patient comfort, in addition to positioning its head more precisely.
- these means may comprise two through holes located in the longitudinal axis of the second support portion, although other configurations would be possible.
- the second support portion may also comprise tolerances to shape the headrest.
- the material that forms the framework of the invention must be radiolucent and non-conductive so as not to alter the NMR images. For example, it could be a central layer of expanded PVC covered with vinyl and nylon screws.
- a second aspect of the present invention is directed to the use of the framework described above for the sequential image taking in the portable coil of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) apparatus and in a computerized tomography (CT) apparatus. That is, images of the patient would no longer be taken in different positions in each of these devices, but the framework of the invention could be used for both. It is understood in this case that the term "sequential" is not limiting the order in which the CT and NMR devices are used.

Description
MARCO DE SUJECIÓN DE MASCARA TERMOPLASTICA
D E S C R I P C I Ó N
