- a cigarette filter includes a generally cylindrical, elongate body 1 of first filter material, in this example cellulose acetate tow.
- the outer cylindrical periphery of the body 1 is covered with a plugwrap 2 that comprises sheet material such as paper.

- Formed in the cylindrical surface is plurality of longitudinally extending linear grooves 3 that are regularly spaced around the periphery. In this example, four equally spaced grooves are provided.
- a pocket 4 is formed within the first material that contains a second filter material in the form of a particulate additive, for example carbon particles.
- the pocket 4 is disposed symmetrically about the cylindrical axis of the body 1.
- the filter body 1 is attached to a tobacco rod 5 which, in the usual way, comprises tobacco leaf or substitute wrapped in a paper wrapper 6.
- the body 1 of the filter may be attached to the tobacco rod 5 by means of tipping paper 7 that is glued around the cylindrical periphery of the body 1 and the end of the rod 5.
- the tipping paper 7 bridges the grooves 3 to form elongate ventilation channels that admit air into the mouth of the smoker.
- ventilation holes 8 are formed in - A -

- the grooves 3 extend from mouth end 9 to a position adjacent to but not touching tobacco end 10 of the filter.
- air is drawn in the direction of arrows X shown in Figure 4 into the grooves 3 for passage out of the mouth end 9 into the user's mouth in the direction of arrows Y.
- the plugwrap 2 may be air impermeable to ensure that air drawn into the grooves 3 travels longitudinally along them. The air from the grooves mixes in the user's mouth with the mainstream smoke drawn through the body 1 of the filter.
- the mainstream smoke is filtered both by the carbon containing particles in the pocket 4 and also by means of the cellulose acetate tow that comprises the main body 1 of the filter.
- particulate carbon can be used to filter vapour phase components from the smoke and the cellulose acetate tow can filter particulate components from the smoke.
- the pocket 4 containing the particulate carbon material is located within the cellulose acetate tow beneath the grooves and is generally surrounded by the cellulose acetate material.
- the grooves 3 extend from adjacent the tobacco end 10 of the filter into the mouth end where they terminate in an opening to allow ventilation air to enter the user's mouth.
- FIG. 6 An alternative configuration is illustrated in Figure 6 in which the grooves 3 are open at the tobacco end 10 to supply ventilation air into the tobacco rod.
- the grooves 3 terminate adjacent the mouth end 9 and do not provide passageways to the mouth.
- ventilation air is drawn through ventilation holes 8 into the grooves 3 in the direction on arrows X and passes along the grooves towards the tobacco end 10 to mix with the smoke passing from the tobacco rod into the filter, the ventilation air changing its direction of flow by substantially 180° as indicated by arrows Z so as to travel with the smoke towards the mouth end 9 of the filter .
- the tipping paper 7 may be provided with transparent portions (not shown) which overlie the grooves 3 in order to reveal to the user the ventilation passageways provided by the grooves.
- a substantially continuous flow of cellulose acetate tow 12 is fed in the direction of arrow 13 into a funnel 14 to provide a generally cylindrical body of cellulose acetate material 14, which is passed through a garniture 15 that attaches plugwrap to supply it continuously from a reel 16.

- Injection device 17 comprises an elongate injection nozzle 18, a reservoir 19 of the particulate material and a supply of compressed gas e.g.
- the resulting filter material that passes out of the device in direction 21 can subsequently be cut into individual segments for use in making cigarettes.
- the cut length may be suitable for producing two cigarettes in tandem or individual cigarettes, as required.
- the cutting may be carried out as a multi stage process in which lengths of filter material for use with multiple cigarettes are first cut and are then later cut into lengths suitable for use in manufacturing cigarettes in tandem or individually.
- a method of imparting the grooves into the filter 1 is illustrated in Figure 8.

- the plate 23 is heated and provided with elongate groove forming projections 24, one for each of the grooves illustrated in Figure 1.
- the plate 22, is moved in the direction of arrow 25 over and parallel to the plate 23 with the filter body 1 engaged between the plates as illustrated in Figure 8 A, so as to roll the filter 1 in the direction of arrow 26 over the projections 24.
- the groove forming projections 24 are driven into the generally cylindrical body 1 and form the grooves 3 in the filter body 1.
- the plugwrap 2 is driven inwardly into the grooves so as to line both the grooves and the cylindrical exterior periphery of the filter body 1.
- the resulting grooves are shown in Figure 8B and are generally U shaped although other groove cross sections can be achieved by suitably configuring the groove forming projections 24.
- the resulting length of filter material 1 can then be cut into suitable length for attachment to one or more tobacco rods 5, for example by the process described with reference to Figure 3.
- the filter may be compressed between dies mounted with projections configured to form the grooves.
- the grooves 3 need not extend from one end of the filter to closely adjacent the other end. The grooves could, for instance, extend only halfway along the filter length. This applies to the groove configuration of Figure 4 and in particular to the reverse groove arrangement of Figure 6.
- grooves have been described as linear grooves that are parallel to the longitudinal axis A-A, other shapes can be used, for example spiral or other serpentine configurations.
- a liquid could be injected into the pocket 4 rather than particulate material.
