  • the plugwrap 2 may be air impermeable to ensure that air drawn into the grooves 3 travels longitudinally along them. The air from the grooves mixes in the user's mouth with the mainstream smoke drawn through the body 1 of the filter.
  • the mainstream smoke is filtered both by the carbon containing particles in the pocket 4 and also by means of the cellulose acetate tow that comprises the main body 1 of the filter.
  • particulate carbon can be used to filter vapour phase components from the smoke and the cellulose acetate tow can filter particulate components from the smoke.
  • the pocket 4 containing the particulate carbon material is located within the cellulose acetate tow beneath the grooves and is generally surrounded by the cellulose acetate material.

  • the tipping paper 7 may be provided with transparent portions (not shown) which overlie the grooves 3 in order to reveal to the user the ventilation passageways provided by the grooves.
  • a substantially continuous flow of cellulose acetate tow 12 is fed in the direction of arrow 13 into a funnel 14 to provide a generally cylindrical body of cellulose acetate material 14, which is passed through a garniture 15 that attaches plugwrap to supply it continuously from a reel 16.
  • a particulate additive such as carbon particles is discontinuously fed through an injection device 17 into the tow to form sequential pockets 4 of the particulate material along the axis of the tow 12.
  • Injection device 17 comprises an elongate injection nozzle 18, a reservoir 19 of the particulate material and a supply of compressed gas e.g.
  • the resulting filter material that passes out of the device in direction 21 can subsequently be cut into individual segments for use in making cigarettes.
  • the cut length may be suitable for producing two cigarettes in tandem or individual cigarettes, as required.
  • the cutting may be carried out as a multi stage process in which lengths of filter material for use with multiple cigarettes are first cut and are then later cut into lengths suitable for use in manufacturing cigarettes in tandem or individually.
  • a method of imparting the grooves into the filter 1 is illustrated in Figure 8.
  • a length of the filter rod material produced by the process illustrated in Figure 7, comprising the filter body 1 containing at least one pocket 4, wrapped with plugwrap 2, is placed between first and second plates 22, 23 illustrated in Figure 8A.
  • the plate 23 is heated and provided with elongate groove forming projections 24, one for each of the grooves illustrated in Figure 1.
  • the plate 22, is moved in the direction of arrow 25 over and parallel to the plate 23 with the filter body 1 engaged between the plates as illustrated in Figure 8 A, so as to roll the filter 1 in the direction of arrow 26 over the projections 24.
  • the groove forming projections 24 are driven into the generally cylindrical body 1 and form the grooves 3 in the filter body 1.
  • the plugwrap 2 is driven inwardly into the grooves so as to line both the grooves and the cylindrical exterior periphery of the filter body 1.
  • the resulting grooves are shown in Figure 8B and are generally U shaped although other groove cross sections can be achieved by suitably configuring the groove forming projections 24.
  • the resulting length of filter material 1 can then be cut into suitable length for attachment to one or more tobacco rods 5, for example by the process described with reference to Figure 3.
  • the filter may be compressed between dies mounted with projections configured to form the grooves.
  • the grooves 3 need not extend from one end of the filter to closely adjacent the other end. The grooves could, for instance, extend only halfway along the filter length. This applies to the groove configuration of Figure 4 and in particular to the reverse groove arrangement of Figure 6.
  • grooves have been described as linear grooves that are parallel to the longitudinal axis A-A, other shapes can be used, for example spiral or other serpentine configurations.
