  • US patent number 4,908,044 discloses a semi-solid ethanol based fuel produced entirely from vegetable products.
  • This fuel contains 86.1% ethanol by weight, 2.2% water by weight and 11.7% sodium salts by weight.
  • the fuel is formed by producing ethanol from a vegetable product ; producing sweetwater as a by-product from the ethanol containing plant, and mixing the sweetwater with the ethanol. The mixing is performed in two different mixing chambers having different rotating speeds and different temperatures. 2.1.1.
  • a disadvantage of the above fuel is that it only contains 2.2% water by weight and therefore a relative high percentage of ethanol.. The high percentage of ethanol increases the cost of the fuel.
  • a disadvantage of the method of manufacturing this fuel is that it is a relatively complex procedure since the ethanol and the sodium salts are normally not a compatible mixture.
  • US patent number 4,261,700 discloses a gelled fuel suitable for igniting wood and charcoal.

  • This fuel is a gelled structure, which forms a shape retaining mass upon contact with water or charcoal.
  • a disadvantage of this gelled fuel is that the alcohol , of which a major part is ethanol, is produced synthetically through a chemical process, which is potentially hazardous to the environment. 3.
