特に、本発明の第2の観点に係る立体画像表示装置によれば、複数の発光素子アレイと複数のスリットとを備えるようにしたので、例えば複数の発光素子アレイをそれぞれ、互いに波長が異なる光を発するものとすることで、カラーによる立体画像表示を実現できる。

[全周囲立体画像表示装置10の構成例]
図1は、第1の実施の形態としての全周囲立体画像表示装置10の構成例を示す部分破断斜視図である。図1に示す全周囲立体画像表示装置10は光線再生方式の立体画像表示装置の一例を構成し、2次元発光素子アレイ101、スリット付きの回転部104及び駆動機構付きの設置架台105を備えている。全周囲立体画像表示装置10は、被写体を全周囲に渡って撮像したり、コンピュータにより作成された立体画像表示用の2次元映像情報等(以下単に映像データDinという)に基づいて被写体の全周囲に渡る立体画像を再生するものである。
モータ52は、本発明における「駆動部」の一具体例に対応している。
続いて、図2~図8を参照して全周囲立体画像表示装置10の組立方法及び各部材の製造方法について説明する。図2は全周囲立体画像表示装置10の組立例を示す分解斜視図である。全周囲立体画像表示装置10の組立方法によれば、まず、図2に示すようなスリット付きの外装体41及び吸気口付きのターンテーブル42を準備して、回転部104を形成する。例えば、所定の口径の筒素材を所定の長さに切削加工して、所定の口径及び所定の長さを有した円筒状の外装体41を形成する。この例で、外装体41には鉄板やアルミニウム板を筒状体にしたものを使用する。

となる。このx軸座標値x(θ)及びy軸座標値y(θ)により、当該2次元発光素子アレイ101の発光面の形状を決定する。ただし、図中、(x1、y1)はスリット102の座標である。(x2、-L2)は、視点pからスリット102を介して実際に観測される発光点の座標である。
図8は、2次元発光素子アレイ101におけるレンズ部材109の機能例を示す回転軸方向から見下ろした模式図である。この例では、図8に示す2次元発光素子アレイ101は、複数の1次元発光素子基板#1が積層して構成される。便宜上、例えば、第1列目にm=12個の発光素子20j(j=1~m)が配置されている。図5~図7で示した例では発光素子がm=59個の場合である。
続いて、図9~図17を参照して全周囲立体画像表示装置10の動作原理について説明する。図9は、全周囲立体画像表示装置10の動作例を示す回転軸方向から見下ろした模式図である。図中、レンズ部材109は省略している。
続いて、視点pから観察される発光点の軌跡例について説明する。
この全周囲立体画像表示装置10では、2次元発光素子アレイ101において、回転軸103に直交する平面内には、上述したように例えばm=12個の発光素子が互いに異なる位置に配置されている。m個の発光素子はそれぞれ、スリット102を介して回転部104の回転に応じてそれぞれ異なる視点位置用の光を外部に向けて放射する。ここで、回転部104が回転している状態において、回転部104の周囲における任意の1つの視点位置から回転軸103の方向を観測したとする。このとき、後述する表示制御部15(図18)は、複数の発光素子による発光点の軌跡によって、回転部104の内部に任意の視点位置に応じた例えば平面状の画像が形成されるように複数の発光素子の発光制御を行う。各視点位置ではその視点位置に応じた少しずつ視差のある例えば平面状の画像が観測される。従って、両眼の位置に相当する任意の2つの視点位置から観測したときには、各視点位置に応じた互いに視差のある例えば平面状の画像が観測される。これにより、観測者は回転部の周囲の任意の位置において、立体画像を認識することができる。
続いて、複数の視点に対してスリット102を介して光線を出力する様子について説明する。図13~図16は、複数の視点pに対してスリット102を介して光線を出力する様子(その1~4)を示す説明図である。この例では、発光ユニットU1の全周囲(360°)に対して、6°置きに60箇所の視点p=300~359を設定した場合であって、回転部104が任意の基準位置から30°回転する、時刻t=0~t=5T(1/12周)に至る区間の様子を示している。
続いて、全周囲立体画像表示装置10に適用可能な立体画像表示用の画像データの生成例について説明する。図17は撮影データ/放射光データの変換例を示すデータフォーマットである。
続いて、全周囲立体画像表示装置10の制御系の構成例について説明する。図18は、全周囲立体画像表示装置10の制御系の構成例を示すブロック図である。この例の全周囲から視聴可能な立体画像表示装置によれば、視聴者がいない多くの領域に対しても、光線を出力する構造のため電力効率の点で無駄が多くなることが懸念される。そこで、視聴者検出による電力効率の改善及び情報量の削減を図っている。
視聴者検出センサ81は、本発明における「観察者検出部」の一具体例に対応している。
制御部55は、本発明における「駆動制御部」の一具体例に対応している。
エンコーダ58は、本発明における「回転検出部」の一具体例に対応している。
続いて、本発明に係る立体画像表示方法について、全周囲立体画像表示装置10の動作例を説明する。図20は、全周囲立体画像表示装置10における立体画像表示例を示す動作フローチャートである。この全周囲立体画像表示装置10によれば、図1に示したように回転部104が所定の口径及び所定の長さを有し、かつ、回転軸103に平行する周面の方向にスリット102を有している。この例では、回転部104には2次元発光素子アレイ101が取り付けられ、この回転部104を回転して立体画像を表示する場合を前提とする。
[全周囲立体画像表示装置20の構成例]
図21A及びBは第2の実施の形態としての全周囲立体画像表示装置20の構成例を示す断面図及びその動作例を示す説明図である。2次元発光素子アレイ101とスリット102から成る発光ユニットU1の数は、前述した構成以外にも様々な構成を取ることができる。例えば、円筒状の2次元発光素子アレイ101を用いた発光ユニットU1を2セット用いた構成も考えられる。
この2つのスリット構造により、図21Bに示す発光ユニットU1の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。同様にして、発光ユニットU2の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。こうした2つのスリット構造の回転部104を視点に対して回転走査することで、円筒形状の光線再生面を形成できるようになる。回転軸103を基準にして結像する立体画像の光が回転部104の内部から2つのスリット102を介して外部へ漏れ出るようになる。

図22A及びBは第3の実施の形態としての全周囲立体画像表示装置30の構成例を示す断面図及びその動作例を示す説明図である。この実施の形態では、波長の違う単色の2次元発光素子アレイ101を幾つか搭載することで、2次元発光素子アレイ101の構造を複雑にすることなく、カラー表示を実行できるようにした。
この3つのスリット構造により、図22Bに示す発光ユニットU1の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。発光ユニットU2の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。同様にして、発光ユニットU3の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。
[全周囲立体画像表示装置40の構成例]
図23A及びBは第4の実施の形態としての全周囲立体画像表示装置40の構成例を示す断面図及びその動作例を示す説明図である。図22Aに示す全周囲立体画像表示装置30は、光線再生方式を採用しており、6つの発光ユニットU1~U6を備え、回転部104が回転軸103を回転中心として矢印Rの方向に、あるいは、その逆の方向に回転する構造となっている。
この6つのスリット構造により、図23Bに示す発光ユニットU1の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。発光ユニットU2の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。発光ユニットU3の2次元発光素子アレイ101から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。
[全周囲立体画像表示装置50の構成例]
図24A及びBは第5の実施の形態としての全周囲立体画像表示装置50の構成例を示す断面図及びその動作例を示す説明図である。2次元発光素子アレイ101とスリット102から成る発光ユニットU1の形状は、前述した構成以外にも様々な構成を取ることができる。例えば、平面状の2次元発光素子アレイ101’を用いた発光ユニットU1’を2セット用いた構成も考えられる。
この2つのスリット構造により、図24Bに示す発光ユニットU1’の2次元発光素子アレイ101’から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。同様にして、発光ユニットU2’の2次元発光素子アレイ101’から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。こうした2つのスリット構造の回転部104を視点に対して回転走査することで、円筒形状の光線再生面を形成できるようになる。この例では、回転軸103を基準にして結像する立体画像の光が、回転部104の内部から2つのスリット102を介して外部へ漏れ出るようになる。
[全周囲立体画像表示装置60の構成例]
図25A及びBは、第6の実施の形態としての全周囲立体画像表示装置60の構成例を示す断面図及びその動作例を示す説明図である。この実施の形態では、波長の違う単色の平面状の2次元発光素子アレイ101’を幾つか搭載することで、2次元発光素子アレイ101’の構造を複雑にすることなく、カラー表示を実行できるようにした。
この3つのスリット構造により、図25Bに示す発光ユニットU1’の2次元発光素子アレイ101’から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。発光ユニットU2’の2次元発光素子アレイ101’から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。同様にして、発光ユニットU3’の2次元発光素子アレイ101’から出射された光がスリット102より左右方向の放射角度が大きく制限される。
[スリット幅の最適化]
本実施の形態では、図26(A),(B)を参照しつつ、上記第1の実施の形態に係る全周囲立体画像表示装置10の構成を例に、回転部104におけるスリット102の幅の最適化について説明する。なお、他の実施の形態に係る全周囲立体画像表示装置についても同様の最適化を行っても良い。
上記第1の実施の形態で説明したように、全周囲立体画像表示装置10では、例えば60箇所の視点p=300~359のそれぞれに対して、2次元発光素子アレイ101による発光点の軌跡、すなわち観測される画像表示面が例えば平面となるような画像表示がなされる。ここで、2次元発光素子アレイ101において、複数の発光素子が曲面形状の面内において等間隔で配置され、かつ、複数の発光素子がすべて同一のタイミングで画像更新(発光制御)がなされるものとする。この場合、任意の視点pから観測される表示面120は、例えば図27(A)のようになる。図中の黒い点は、画素(発光点の軌跡)に相当する。この場合、観測される表示面120は、中央部の画素間幅w0に比べて、横方向の左右端部の画素間幅w1が縮んで見える問題がある。しかしながら理想的には、図27(B)のように中央部と左右端部で画素間幅wが同一となる(発光点が一定間隔となる)ことが好ましい。
L3=L1-L2として、次のようになる。

図29に、視点pからスリット102を介して実際に観測される発光点が平面内で等間隔に並ぶための、2次元発光素子アレイ101の曲面形状、およびその曲面内での発光点(発光素子)の位置の具体例を示す。図29では、
L1=90,L2=10,r=30とし、x軸方向の発光点総数を12個、間隔を4とし、等間隔に観測される発光点のx2の値を、
-22,-18,-14,-10,-6,-2,2,6,10,14,18,22
としている。

以上で説明した各実施の形態において、視点pから観測される表示面が平面となるように2次元発光素子アレイ101の曲面を構成することが好ましい。この理由は以下の通りである。
・観測される表示面が平面であれば、カメラで撮影した画像やCGで製作した画像を画像処理なしにそのまま用いることができる。観測される表示面が曲面の場合、視点pから観測される画像に歪みが生じないよう表示面の曲率を補正した画像を生成して用いる必要がある。
・観測される表示面が曲面である場合、表示面を上から見下ろしたり、下から見上げたりすると画像が弓形に歪んでしまい良好な立体像を得ることが難しくなる。
・画素間隔が一定であれば、カメラで撮影した画像やCGで製作した画像を画像処理なしにそのまま用いることができる。一定でない場合、画素間幅の歪みを補正した画像を生成して用いる必要がある。
[各実施の形態の表示装置による立体画像の視聴例]
図33A及びBは、各実施の形態としての全周囲立体画像表示装置10等における立体画像の視聴例を示す説明図である。図33Aに示す立体画像の視聴例によれば、全周囲立体画像表示装置10等により立体表示されるキャラクタ(男子の人形)を4名の視聴者H1~H4により視聴する場合である。この場合は、キャラクタ全周囲の立体画像が表示されるので、視聴者H1(男性)は、キャラクタの左面側の立体画像を視聴できるようになる。視聴者H2(男性)は、キャラクタの前面側の立体画像を視聴できるようになる。視聴者H3(男性)は、キャラクタの右面側の立体画像を視聴できるようになる。視聴者H4(女性)は、キャラクタの背面側の立体画像を視聴できるようになる。
本発明は、上記各実施の形態に限定されず種々の変形実施が可能である。
例えば、図1および図2に示した全周囲立体画像表示装置10において、回転部104の外側に、回転部104を保護等するための固定部材が設けられていても良い。この場合、例えばスリット102が設けられた外装体41の外周を間隔を空けて覆うように、回転しない固定部材を設けると良い。固定部材は、例えば全体が筒状の透明部材で構成することができる。また固定部材として、網状に加工された筒状の部材を用いるようにしても良い。例えば、パンチングメタル等の網状に加工した金属等による部材を用いるようにしても良い。
Claims (22)
- 内部に回転軸を有する円筒状の回転部と、
前記回転軸を回転中心として、前記回転部を回転させる駆動部と、
前記回転部の内部に取り付けられ、複数の発光素子がm行×n列(m,n=2以上の整数)のマトリクス状に配設されることにより形成された発光面を有する発光素子アレイと、
前記発光面に対向する位置において、前記回転部の周面に設けられたスリットと
を備え、
前記発光素子アレイは、
曲面形状部分を有し、前記曲面形状部分の凹面側が前記発光面とされ、
前記複数の発光素子は、
前記発光面の方向に応じた光を、前記スリットを介して前記回転部の外部に放射する
立体画像表示装置。 - 前記スリットは、前記回転軸に平行な方向に設けられている
請求項1に記載の立体画像表示装置。 - 前記回転軸から任意の視点に至る線分の距離をL1とし、

前記発光素子基板は、プリント配線基板を湾曲状に切り欠いた小口面を有し、前記小口面にm個の発光素子がライン状に実装された構造を有している
請求項2に記載の立体画像表示装置。 - 前記スリットの短軸方向における幅が、前記m個の発光素子の実装ピッチと同じ大きさとなるように形成されている
請求項7に記載の立体画像表示装置。 - 前記回転部の外部に存在する観察者を検出する観察者検出部をさらに備え、
前記表示制御部は、
前記観察者検出部から得られた観察者検出値と、所定の観察者判別値とを比較し、前記比較の結果に応じて前記発光素子の発光強度を制御する

前記回転部に取り付けられている

前記回転検出部から得られた回転検出値と、所定の回転基準値とを比較し、前記比較の結果に応じて前記回転部の回転動作を停止するように前記駆動部を制御する

前記駆動部を制御する駆動制御部と
をさらに備え、
前記駆動制御部は、
前記振動検出部から得られた振動検出値と、所定の振動基準値とを比較し、前記比較の結果に応じて前記回転部の回転動作を停止するように前記駆動部を制御する

前記複数の発光素子が、前記発光面の方向に応じた光を、前記スリットを介して前記回転部の外部に放射するような立体画像表示装置を製造する
