Definitions
- the invention relates to a device and a method for detecting the goods on a self-service cash register system.
- Such devices are used to capture the goods selected by a customer in a self-service department store. The capture of
- Goods should be delivered automatically in order to be able to waive the presence of a cashier when paying for the goods.
- the process of independently collecting and paying for the goods selected by a customer without relying on the presence of a cashier is referred to as self-checkout.
- the goods are recorded with or without the support of the customer and the purchase price of the recorded goods is calculated.
- the customer then pays his purchase in cash or by card directly to the self-service checkout system.
- the goods are equipped with a machine-readable marking, a machine-readable identifier or coding or a machine-readable code.
- Mark or code is, for example, a one-dimensional, two-dimensional or other multi-dimensional bar code. This is also called a barcode or barcode.
- the machine-readable mark contains, inter alia, the price of the goods.
- the customer places his goods selected by him on a transport device, such as a conveyor belt.
- a transport device such as a conveyor belt.
- one or more scanning devices are arranged stationary on the transport device. When transporting the goods relative to the scanning device, the machine-readable mark is detected.
- the scanner consists of several scanning units. Each scanning unit is provided with a source for emitting optical radiation and with a detector for receiving the radiation reflected by the goods lying on the transport device equipped. Typically, the optical radiation is light of the visible wavelength range or the infrared wavelength range.
- the scanning unit generates by means of pattern forming mirrors a scanning pattern, which is imaged on the scanned goods and is reflected by the goods.
- the scanning unit also generates a signal corresponding to the reflected radiation.
- Such scanning units are also called bar code readers or scanners. Often these are so-called laser scanner modules. They transfer the optically scanned machine-readable mark into electrical
- Scanners are also referred to as tunnel scanners.
- the individual scanning units are in this case arranged in a stationary manner over an archway that is exciting over the transport device. Some of these arrangements additionally have a scanning device below the conveying plane of the transport device.
- a disadvantage proves that goods that have no machine-readable code, or whose code is not readable due to damage or contamination of the mark or an unfavorable form of packaging of the product, are not covered by the known devices. As a result, the goods in question are not taken into account in the settlement of all goods selected by the customer. Unless there are further controls, such as the weight of the goods takes place, the customer receives the goods in question without paying for it. This leads to so-called inventory differences for the operator of the hypermarket.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a device and a method for detecting the goods on a self-service check system with which each product entered by a customer into the self-service check system is reliably detected, and with which inventory differences are avoided, without this additional devices are necessary.
- the device according to the invention with the features of claim 1 is characterized in that in addition to the scanning device for
- an optical image pickup device is arranged on the transport device. With this image recording device, at least one image of each goods transported on the transport device is taken. At the same time or within a time interval before or after the image is taken, the machine becomes readable
- Code detected by a scanner The temporal correlation of the two events depends on how the two devices are arranged with respect to the transport device. If the optical image recording device and the scanning device are at the same height with respect to the transport direction of the transport device, then the image and the machine-readable coding of a product can be recorded simultaneously. If the image recording device is located in the transport direction in front of the scanning device, the image is recorded first. In the opposite case, the machine-readable encoding is recorded first.
- the customer When depositing his goods on the transport device, the customer is requested to specify a minimum distance between every two goods observed.
- the transport device may be provided with markings in a different color of the transport device optionally with an additional structure.
- the transport device can also be equipped with an additional conveyor belt with goods centers. Due to the given spatial
- Distance between each two goods on the transport device ensures that each item or article or goods is detected separately from other objects or goods both by the image pickup device and by the scanning device.
- the image recording device may be, for example, an optical camera or an image sensor.
- the image recording device can either produce one or more discrete images of each product on the conveyor belt or record a continuous film of the goods transported on the transport device.
- the image recording device is triggered by a sensor which detects when a product is located directly on the image recording device. This may be, for example, a light barrier. If no special triggering of the image recording device takes place and instead several images or a film of the goods are taken, then the individual goods in the images or the image sequence are to be determined by means of image processing methods.
- the device according to the invention with the features of claim 1 and the method according to the invention with the features of claim 11 ensure that, with an error-free detection for each product, two independent information are available: firstly one or more images and secondly the machine-readable code. In order to verify that the collection of a good has been successful and error-free, both information must be available and certain criteria must be met for both
- the transport device can be stopped and the goods in question either discarded or a new attempt to capture the goods can be undertaken.
- a person responsible for monitoring the device concerned can initiate the manual detection of the relevant product.
- the collection of the following goods can either be interrupted or continued.
- the transport device can have a shorter overall length and the requirements can be met more cost-effective and space-saving.
- Contents of the two information are compared.
- This comparison is more complex and involves a larger amount of data than checking the temporal correlation. If the time is checked, a detailed evaluation of the images for which a machine-readable code was recorded in the specified time interval can be omitted.
- the evaluation of an image only takes place if no code has been read within the specified time window. In this case, the evaluation can take place either by a person or by image processing by a computer. In both
- the picture serves to clearly identify the product concerned and separate it from the other products.
- An exact location of an article is possible.
- article tracking or object tracking is also possible.
- a sensor for detecting the presence of a product on the transport device is arranged on the transport device.
- This may be, for example, a light barrier.
- the sensor is arranged in or near the conveying plane of the transport device, so that flat objects can be detected.
- the sensor is coupled to the image pickup device to trigger the image pickup device when a commodity passes the image pickup device on the transport device.
- the device is equipped with a time recording device. This can be, for example, a clock or a stopwatch. The period of a time-periodic process, for example, a vibration is used as a measure of time.
- the sensor for detecting the presence of a product on the transport device is linked to the time measuring device.
- the time recording can be started when a commodity passes the sensor on the conveyor.
- the principle of a stopwatch can be implemented.
- the time measurement is started when an object passes the sensor and an image of the object is generated with the image recording device. If the machine-readable code of the goods can be recorded, the code must be recorded within a certain time after the clock has been started. It is therefore sufficient if the time-measuring device measures the time of this predetermined time interval. After this time, the time detection device can be stopped automatically. If no machine-readable code has been recorded by that date, it can be considered that it is not possible to collect the code for the product in question.
- a scanning device is arranged below the conveying plane of the transport device.
- the transport device is equipped with several transversely to the direction of transport extending drivers, which the goods on the
- the transport device may additionally comprise at least one conveyor belt, which runs in the conveying plane below the driver.
- the conveyor belt either ends at the scanning device or contains a recess or a diversion for the scanning device. In this way it is avoided that the conveyor belt below the conveyor plane covering arranged scanning device.
- the additional conveyor belt and the drivers are synchronized with each other via a control device.
- the transport device is equipped with a plurality of markings, which divide the upwardly facing surface of the transport device in the transport direction into several areas of the same size.
- the markings may be, for example, lines or bars which stand out in color from the surface of the transport device and which run perpendicular to the transport direction of the transport device.
- the markings may have a structure and project upwards over the surface of the transport device. If the transport device is equipped with carriers, these serve as markings for limiting different areas. The customer is requested to place only one product in an area delimited by two markings. This ensures that the product in question can be clearly identified. This applies both to the acquisition of an image by means of an image recording device, as well as for the detection of the machine-readable code.
- Figure 1 shows a device for detecting the goods on a self-service cash register system with a transport device 1, an optical image pickup device 2 and a scanner 3. Goods are in the
- the transport device 1 consists of a conveyor belt 4 and a plurality of carriers 5 interconnected via straps 5.
- the system of straps 5 and carriers 6 is synchronized with the conveyor belt 4 via a control device 7.
- the control device 7 ensures that the conveyor belt 4 and the drivers 6 move with the straps 5 at the same speed, so that the goods are not pushed or braked on the conveyor belt 4 by the drivers 6.
- the conveyor belt 4 is guided in the region of the scanning device 3 below the scanning device.
- the drivers 6, however, are guided along the upward-facing surface of the scanning device 3 and ensure that the goods are pushed over the scanning device 3. In this way, the down-facing machine-readable codes on the goods can be detected by means of the scanner.
- the optical image recording device 2 is a camera which is arranged in front of the scanning device 3 in the transport direction 8. In addition, the image pickup device is located above the transport device 1. The viewing window of the optical image pickup device 2 is so large that the entire area delimited by two drivers 6 can be imaged. This is indicated in the drawing by dashes emanating from the optical image pickup device 2.
- a light barrier is arranged, which triggers the optical image pickup device 2, as soon as one in the drawing unrecognizable object is located in the beam path of the light barrier.
- Transmitter and receiver of the light barrier can be arranged either on one or two different sides of the transport device 1. If both are located on one side, it must be ensured that the light beam emitted by the transmitter is reflected on the opposite side of the transport device.
- the surface of the frame 10 is designed so that it reflects the light or the frame 10 is equipped in this area with a reflective element. This is not shown in the drawing.
