Abstract

The safety system for motor vehicle crashes is based on a moving seat (8, 9). This movement is enabled by a shock absorbing mechanism (2, 3) with is placed between the seat and the undercarriage. Along with this a seat belt goes from the seat back into the seat cushion.

Crash Safety System in Motor Vehicles -
Safe Seat Subject of the invention
The subject of the invention is a shock absorbing mechanism which is inserted between the seat and undercarriage in all motor vehicles.
Technical problem
The technical problem solved by the invention pertains to upgrading seats in all motor vehicles in order to substantially improve safety in cases of a frontal crash (or rear crash).
State of the art
Motor vehicle seats do not have a mechanism that would, in the event of a (front or rear) crash, enable the seat slide a little bit further or back in a controlled and safe manner. All seats are fastened to the vehicle body in a fixed manner and in the case of a crash such seats do not provide (for) additional safety. Vehicle seats known until now have been static, which means that in the event of a crash in most cases they remain in the same position on the vehicle body. Because the seat remains static the duration of the crash is compacted, resulting in increased physical injuries.
Solution of the technical problem
Seats supplemented with a special shock absorbing mechanism greatly extend the duration of a crash and can thus often save a human life or essentially limit physical injuries The invention of the safe seat essentially deals with the lack of static or fixed seat in a fairly simple way." This can be done by inserting a special shock absorbing mechanism under the seat. In case of a frontal crash the seat will not stop with the vehicle but will slide (forward) in a controlled manner (see figure 5). This way the duration of the crash is lengthened, a great deal of released energy is transmitted to the shock absorbing mechanism, thereby lessening the potential for physical injuries. A similar process occurs in cases of rear crashes.
The essence and the construction of the invention as well as how the safety system works will now be explained by means of an execution example and figures indicating:
Figure 1 : Perspective view of the safe seat from the side, showing seat 8, bottom cushion 9, housing 1, disc 2, absorbing means 3, attachment points 6, and fastening point 5.
Figure 2 Perspective view of the safe seat from behind, showing seat 8, guides 4, housing 1, and spring 2.
Figure 3 On top intersected view - the cylinders with a moveable disc with a spring for the construction of the shock absorbing mechanism showing housing 1 and disc 2.
Figure 4 Cross section of the shock absorbing mechanism with added springs, showing housing 1, disc 2, absorbing means 3, attachment points 6, and fastening point 5.
Figure 5 Functioning of the safety system (shock absorbing mechanism) in a frontal crash, showing seat 8, bottom cushion 9, housing 1, disc 2, absorbing means 3, attachment points 6, and fastening point 5, and safety belt 7.
Figure 6 Cross section scheme of the shock absorbing mechanism that protects travelers only in a frontal crash, showing housing 1, disc 2, absorbing means 3, attachment points 6, and fastening point 5.
Figure 7 Scheme of the safe seat with a seat belt passageway originating from and ending in the seat showing seat 8, bottom cushion 9, and safety belt 7. The key role in the safety system (safe seat) is played by the shock absorbing mechanism which is built in between the seat and undercarriage, as seen in figures 3, 4 and 6. This shock absorbing mechanism is comprised of absorbing means 3, in this embodiment springs but any other means, a disc 2 to which said seat is attached, housing 1 for housing said shock absorbing mechanism, and attachment points 6 for attaching said shock absorbing mechanism to the undercarriage of the car or other fixed point within the car.
Figures 1 and 2 depict the safe seat. From these figures it is evident that the shock absorbing mechanism presented in figures 4 and 6 are fastened at the bottom to the vehicle body at the fastening points 6; at the top they are fastened to the seat through disc 2 and fastening point 5. The shock absorbing mechanism shown in the figures 3, 4 and 6 is composed of:
1. on the top: intersected hollow cylinder 1 (the cylinder is enclosed on each side),
2. Disc 2, which moves to the left and right,
4. Two springs 3.
The job of disc 2 is above all of a practical nature as it enables an easier and more compact fastening of the seat to the shock absorbing mechanism. Figure 2 shows the final appearance of the inventions from behind, where on each side of the shock absorbing mechanism (figure 4) there are seat ducts 4 which do not present a novelty and can stay the same as in static seats. It is important, however, that the ducts 4 ensure proper sliding of the seat.
The shock absorbing mechanism as shown in figure 4 is meant for frontal crashes as well as rear crashes. It could be remodeled for frontal crashes only. Such a scheme is depicted in figure 6. In this case the seat would slide even further and would protect additionally from injuries as the duration of the crash would increase and more energy would be released to the springs. Due to the increased sliding of the seat, this system requires adequate space, as otherwise serious leg injuries can occur. This can partly be solved through the construction of new dashboards allowing for increase leg space. The invention entails yet another important change. The seat belt can no longer extend from the vehicle body and travel to the vehicle undercarriage. Rather, as seen in figure 7, it must originate from and end in the seat itself. If this were not the case, the seat belt would hinder the sliding of the seat in the vehicle and make it impossible for the shock absorbing mechanism (figures 4 and 6) to absorb energy that would be harmful for people. Thus, it would not protect drivers and passengers.
The system, as shown in figure 6, is above all very recommendable in vehicles where safety should be increased and when there is a passenger sitting in the rear seats. In the event of a rear crash, the shock absorbing mechanism depicted in figure 4 could (due the front seat's sliding backwards) seriously harm passengers in the rear of the vehicle, particularly their legs, if there were not adequate space.
