Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a fan arrangement of a vehicle according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • Vehicles e.g. trucks and passenger cars, often have the engine situated at the front in an engine space which is effectively ventilated by the draught caused by movement of the vehicle and also by a fan at the front of the vehicle which draws air through the vehicle's radiator to cool the latter, after which the air thus warmed, together with the air warmed by the engine in the engine space, is evacuated, e.g. by the engine space not being provided with any enclosing floor.
  • Engines spaces arranged in the rear portion of a vehicle are often more enclosed than engine spaces at the front of vehicles.
  • a problem may arise because air warmed by the engine is not evacuated quickly enough from the engine space, leading to high temperatures in parts of the engine space, since the draught caused by movement of the vehicle will make no major contribution to ventilating the engine space.
  • Arranging the fan to draw ambient air in through a cooling package in which the fan is also adapted to blowing the ambient air warmed by the cooling package towards the engine in the engine space has been a way of trying to increase the amount of air flowing through the engine space in order to prevent the problem of local over-temperatures.
  • US 5 971 709 A refers to a device of the kind mentioned above.
  • EP 0 735 252 A2 refers to a cooling system for vehicles in which a fan arranged between a heat exchanger and a noise-damping wall creates a negative pressure whereby air is drawn through the heat exchanger for cooling the latter.
  • the noise-damping wall is arranged between the fan and an engine space. Arranging the fan to direct the air flow in a radial direction close to the noise-damping wall also induces negative pressure in a region close to the noise-damping wall, thereby drawing air out from the engine space via apertures in the noise-damping wall to cool the engine space.
  • a fan arrangement according to claim 1 which comprises the characteristic that a fan cowling in the engine space is adapted to separating two cooling air flows from one another to prevent the air streams from affecting one another, affords the advantage of maximising the cooling air flows and hence avoiding over-temperatures in the engine space.
  • Figure 1 depicts schematically a vehicle with an engine space and a fen arrangement according to a first embodiment of the invention
  • Figure 2 depicts schematically a fan arrangement according to a second embodiment of the invention.
  • Figure 1 depicts schematically a vehicle 2 with an engine space 4 and an engine 6, and a fan arrangement 8 according to a first embodiment of the invention, which engine space 4 further comprises at least two inlets 10, 12 through which the fan arrangement 8 is adapted to drawing in ambient air in the form of cooling air flows A, B.
  • a cooling package 14 is situated in the first inlet 10.
  • the fan arrangement 8 comprises a first fan 16 adapted to drawing in ambient air in the direction of arrow A over the cooling package 14 to cool the latter, and to blowing this warmed air from the engine space 4 out to the surroundings 18 of the vehicle 2 via a first duct 20 in the direction of arrow C.
  • the fan arrangement 8 further comprises a second fan 22 adapted to drawing in ambient air in the direction of arrow B over the engine 6 to cool the latter and to blowing this warmed air from the engine space 4 out to the surroundings 18 of the vehicle 2 via a second duct 24 in the direction of arrow D.
  • the two fans 16, 22 are arranged on the same drive shaft 26 to make it possible for them to be driven by the same drive source.
  • the fan arrangement 8 according to the invention is particularly advantageous in vehicles 2 in which the engine space 4 is arranged in the rear portion of the vehicle 2 and is relatively enclosed, which means that the draught caused by movement of the vehicle makes no major contribution to blowing ambient air towards the cooling package 14 and the engine 6 to cool these latter, and in which the air warmed by them is not evacuated quickly enough from the engine space 4, leading to high temperatures in parts of the engine space 4.
  • the fan arrangement 8 is also applicable in vehicles where the engine is arranged in the forward portion of the vehicle or in some further portion of the vehicle, e.g. centrally in the vehicle.
  • the fan arrangement 8 further comprises at least one fan cowling 28 which separates the two air flows A/C and B/D from one another so that they can flow in mutually separated ducts 20, 24 to prevent the air streams from affecting one another, e.g. by one of the air streams retarding the other air stream, thereby making it possible to maximise the air flow velocity and the cooling capacity.
  • Ambient air is drawn into the engine space 4 in the direction of arrow B through at least one second inlet 12 which may be a valve, a duct or an intermediate space or a slit or the like.
  • the drive shaft 26 of the fans 16, 22 is powered by a separate motor 30, e.g. a hydraulic motor.
  • the air stream C which has passed over the cooling package 14 is usually warmer than the air stream D which has flowed past the engine 6.
  • a seal device 32 e.g. an annular brush, is preferably arranged between the fan cowling 28 and the fens 16, 22.
  • the seal device 32 may be fastened either to the fan cowling 28 or to the fans 16, 22.
  • the cooling package 14 may comprise one or more units, e.g. oil cooler, fuel cooler, charge air cooler, coolant cooler for the vehicle's engine or cooler for the vehicle's air conditioning system.
  • the fan 16 adapted to drawing ambient air through the cooling package 14 is an axial fan and the fan 22 adapted to drawing air past the engine 6 is a radial fan.
  • the fan cowling 28 may take the form of a single part or a number of separate parts 36, 38, 40.
  • FIG. 2 depicts schematically a fan arrangement 8 according to a second embodiment of the invention. This embodiment differs from that described with reference to Figure 1 in that the drive shaft 34 of the fans 16, 22 is powered by the vehicle's engine 6.
