Abstract

A distance measuring apparatus irradiates a modulated light to an object (H) and responds to an incident light reflected by the object (H) to generate and allocate carriers in time division, thereby determining a distance (d) to the object (H) based on the charge amounts of the allocated carriers. The distance measuring apparatus comprises a plurality of capacitors (C1b, C2b) that store the respective allocated carriers; comparators (COMP1, COMP2) that determine whether any one of output voltages (VOUT1, VOUT2) corresponding to the respective charge amounts of the carriers stored in the capacitors (C1b, C2b) has exceeded a threshold value (Vth); and switches (Qa, Qb) that, when the comparators (COMP1, COMP2) providing an indication to the effect that any one of the output voltages (VOUT1, VOUT2) has exceeded the threshold value (Vth), couple input-side terminals (P1, P3) of the respective capacitors (C1b, C2b) to a certain potential (VA) such that the stored charge amounts of the capacitors (C1b, C2b) decrease.
