Description

Description LIQUID BODY CLEANSER COMPOSITION
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a liquid body cleanser composition. More particularly, the present invention relates to a liquid body cleanser composition for moisturizing and revitalizing rough skin, scalp and hair, comprising an aloe vera gel as a major ingredient and a small amount of vinegar. Background Art
[2] Bar soaps were primarily used for cleansing and washing the skin and hair of the body, but liquid products, such as shampoo, rinse, body cleansers and foam cleansers, have been recently marketed extensively because they are convenient to use. Liquid skin and body cleansing products mostly have specific functions, for example, skin moisturization, scalp and hair care, and atopic skin care. Of them, liquid body cleansers are usually able to cleanse both skin and hair, and they, due to such convenience in use, are becoming popular. To satisfy the increasing demand for liquid body cleansers, many studies have been conducted to develop liquid products having novel functions.
[3] Various body cleansers have been developed. For example, Korean Pat. Laid-Open
Publication No. 1999-66573 discloses a liquid body cleansing composition having good skin cosmetic and skin moisturizing effects, the composition comprising 0.5-15 wt% of an amino acid, lysine, and 0.1-10 wt% of urea as a skin absorption enhancer, weight percents based on the total weight of the liquid body cleansing composition. Korean Pat. Laid-Open Publication No. 1998-2226 describes a body cleansing composition having skin soothing and revitalizing effects, the composition comprising 0.1-15 parts by weight of a sulfur extract, 0.1-15 parts by weight of a gold extract, 0.1-15 parts by weight of an extract of Phellodendron amurense, and 0.1-15 parts by weight of an extract of Sophora flavescens Ait, relative to a common soap composition. The conventional body cleansing compositions have as main functions protecting skin and hair and keeping them healthy, but they are not able to inhibit fungal growth, thereby having no ability to prevent skin diseases such as tinea and eczema. Disclosure of Invention
Technical Problem
[4] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a liquid body cleanser composition comprising an aloe vera gel as a major ingredient so as to moisturize and revitalize rough skin, scalp and hair, and a small amount of vinegar so as to inhibit the growth of various fungal strains through its antifungal activity and prevent the onset of skin diseases, such as tinea and eczema. Technical Solution
[5] In order to accomplish the above object, the liquid body cleanser composition of the present invention includes 35-45 parts by weight of an aloe vera gel, 30-40 parts by weight of an anionic surfactant, 3-5 parts by weight of vinegar, 5-10 parts by weight of cocamidopropyl betaine, 1.6-2.4 parts by weight of a vegetable oil, 2-4 parts by weight of glycerin, 4-6 parts by weight of a foam stabilizing agent, and 0.03-0.05 parts by weight of a chelating agent, relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water.
[6] The aloe vera gel and vinegar major ingredients will be described at present, and other ingredients will be described in detail in the [Best Mode] section.
[7] The aloe vera gel, employed in the present invention, has a moisturizing effect on troublesome skin by virtue of maintaining the skin soft and moisturized yet without irritating, and also provides various nutrients to the skin.
[8] The term "aloe vera gel", as used herein, refers to a gel obtained from the aloe vera plant, the gel being prepared by peeling off leaves of the aloe vera plant, adding 100-160 parts by weight of a clear jelly like gel from the inside of the aloe vera leaves into 100 parts by weight of purified water, grinding finely the inner leaf gel in a blender, and passing the ground gel through a sieve. If the aloe vera gel is contained in the composition in an amount less than 100 parts by weight, the skin moisturizing effect of aloe may be reduced. In contrast, if the content of the aloe vera gel exceeds 160 parts by weight, the excess amount of aloe vera gel makes grinding finely in a blender difficult.
[9] The liquid body cleanser composition of the present invention also includes vinegar in an amount of 3-5 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water. Vinegar serves as an antimicrobial agent as well as a strong antiseptic due to its acidity. Chemically synthesized antiseptics and antimicrobial agents usually cause serious adverse effects in human bodies. In contrast, since vinegar has antimicrobial and antiseptic activity while protecting the body, it helps the skin of the body clean. Also, since vinegar, although it is acidic, makes inorganic matters in blood alkaline, resulting in the conversion of an acidic physical constitution into a weakly alkaline condition, thereby helping the body maintain health.
[10] The vinegar suitable for use in the present invention preferably contains 3-7 wt% of acetic acid, and is one or more selected from general brewed vinegar and fruit vinegar, such as brown rice vinegar, apple vinegar, persimmon vinegar, grape vinegar and onion vinegar.
[11] In addition to the aloe vera gel and vinegar, the liquid body cleanser composition includes a vegetable oil, such as olive oil and camellia oil. The composition of the present invention further includes ingredients commonly used in the formulation of a liquid body cleanser, for example, a moisturizer, such as glycerin, a foam stabilizing agent, and a chelating agent. The composition may yet further include a dye, an aromatic, and the like according to the consumers' taste or the use intended by the manufacturers.
Advantageous Effects
[12] In accordance with the present invention, the liquid body cleanser composition moisturizes rough skin, scalp and hair, and provides nutrients contained in the aloe plant to the skin and hair, thereby promoting the health of the skin and hair.
[13] In particular, the small amount of vinegar contained in the present composition prevents the onset of skin diseases, such as tinea and eczema, by inhibiting the growth of various bacteria through its antibacterial action. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
[14] Hereinafter, the liquid body cleanser composition according to the present invention will be described in detail.
[15] The present invention is directed to a liquid body cleanser composition comprising
35-45 parts by weight of an aloe vera gel, 30-40 parts by weight of an anionic surfactant, 3-5 parts by weight of vinegar, 5-10 parts by weight of cocamidopropyl betaine, 1.6-2.4 parts by weight of a vegetable oil, 2-4 parts by weight of glycerin, 4-6 parts by weight of a foam stabilizing agent, and 0.03-0.05 parts by weight of a chelating agent, relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water.
[16] The purified water serves as a solvent for dissolving ingredients of the liquid body cleanser composition.
[17] The aloe vera gel moisturizes and nourishes rough skin and scalp, thereby revitalizing the skin and hair. The aloe vera gel is preferably present in an amount of 35-45 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water.
[18] If the aloe vera gel is present in an amount less than 35 parts by weight in the present composition, the composition may have decreased effects of moisturizing and revitalizing skin, scalp and hair. In contrast, the aloe vera gel content exceeding 45 parts by weight may lead to improved moisturizing and revitalizing effects on skin, scalp and hair, but may result in a decrease in the cleansing capacity of the present composition due to relatively insufficient concentrations of other ingredients.
[19] The anionic surfactant functions to clean the skin and hair of the body, and is preferably present in an amount of 30-40 parts by weight, relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water, in the present composition. If the anionic surfactant is present in an amount less than 30 parts by weight, it may not fulfill its cleansing function. In contrast, the anionic surfactant content greater than 40 parts by weight may result in excess cleansing, leading to the roughness of skin or hair. Any anionic surfactant capable of being used in a general liquid body cleanser composition may be employed in the present invention. The anionic surfactant is one or more selected from the group consisting of sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, magnesium lauryl sulfate, lauryl sulfate triethanolamine, sodium polyoxyethylene lauryl sulfate, and ammonium polyoxyethylene lauryl sulfate, but the present invention is not limited to these examples of anionic surfactants.
[20] In order to increase cleansing performance, the liquid body cleanser composition may further include a non-ionic surfactant without departing from the purpose and scope of the present invention. Examples of non-ionic surfactants include di- ethanolamide laurate, coconut fatty acid diethanolamide, and coconut fatty acid mo- noethanolamide.
[21] The cocamidopropyl betaine is an amphoteric surfactant that is known to have conditioning properties. It softens hair fibers and replaces hair rinsing agents. It is preferably present in the present composition in an amount of 5-10 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water. If cocamidopropyl betaine is present in an amount less than 5 parts by weight, desired rinsing properties may not be met due to the insufficient amount of cocamidopropyl betaine, and thus, individual hairs become tangled with each other, making it difficult to comb out the tangles. If the content of cocamidopropyl betaine exceeds 10 parts by weight, the content and effects of other ingredients may be correspondingly decreased.
[22] The vinegar, employed in the present invention, serves as a potential antiseptic as well as an antibacterial agent due to its acidity. The vinegar is preferably used in an amount of 3-5 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water. If the vinegar is present in the present composition in an amount less than 3 parts by weight, various bacterial growth may not be effectively controlled. The vinegar content greater than 5 parts by weight may give rise to irritation of the skin, such as erythema and other skin troubles.
[23] The vegetable oils, olive oil and camellia oil, are preferably used in an amount of
0.8-1.2 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water.
[24] The olive oil has a high content of an unsaturated fatty acid, namely oleic acid. It prevents moisture evaporation from the skin surface and imbibes a pleasant feeling to skin. If the content of olive oil is less than 0.8 parts by weight, the moisture evaporation from the skin surface may not be effectively prevented. A content of olive oil in excess of 1.2 parts by weight may improve skin moisturization, but may cause a greasy or sticky feeling or may lead to decreased content and effects of the other ingredients of the present composition. [25] The camellia oil has hair moisturizing effects because it gets absorbed into hair and forms a protective barrier on the surface which imparts a shine to hair and helps prevent moisture loss. If the camellia oil is used in an amount less than 0.8 parts by weight, the oily barrier may not be sufficiently created on the surface of hair, resulting in hair moisture loss not being effectively prevented. The camellia oil content exceeding 1.2 parts by weight may result in decreased content of other ingredients of the present composition, leading to decreased effects thereof.
[26] The glycerin serves as a humectant that helps skin and hair retain moisture. It is preferably used in an amount of 2-4 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water. The glycerin content less than 2 parts by weight may reduce skin and hair moisturizing effects. A glycerin content greater than 4 parts by weight may leave skin and hair sticky, or may decrease the content of other ingredients of the present composition, leading to decreased effects thereof.
[27] In addition to the aforementioned glycerin, other humectants, such as propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol, are also suitable for use in the present invention.
[28] The present composition further includes additional additives commonly added into a liquid body cleanser composition, such as a foam stabilizing agent and a chelating agent.
[29] As a foam stabilizing agent, the present invention employs diethanolamide, which increases the viscosity of a liquid body cleanser and stabilizes foam. The compound is preferably used in an amount of 4-6 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water. If the compound is used in an amount less than 4 parts by weight, foam may not be generated well upon application onto skin or hair, leading to decreased cleansing performance. The diethanolamide content exceeding 6 parts by weight may result in excessive foaming, which requires more rinsing.
[30] Examples of diethanolamide (DEA) compounds suitable for use in the present invention include cocamide DEA, made by reacting coconut fatty acids with di- ethanolamine, and lauramide DEA, made by reacting lauric acid with diethanolamine.
[31] As a chelating agent, the present invention employs ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid
(EDTA), which enhances the foaming ability of the liquid body cleanser composition of the present invention. The chelating agent is preferably used in an amount of 0.03-0.05 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of purified water. When EDTA is used within the range, the foaming ability of the present composition is enhanced.
[32] In addition to EDTA, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) is also suitable for use as a chelating agent in the present invention.
[33] As described above, the inventors of this application prepared a liquid body cleanser composition having moisturizing effects on skin, scalp and hair and antifungal activity against fungal strains which cause skin diseases, such as tinea and eczema, thereby leading to the present invention. Mode for the Invention
[34] A better understanding of the present invention may be obtained through the following examples which are set forth to illustrate, but are not to be construed as the limit of the present invention.
[35] EXAMPLES [36] 1. Preparation of liquid body cleanser compositions [37] Liquid body cleanser compositions (Examples 1 and 2 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2) were prepared according to the composition described in Table 1, below.
[38] Table 1 [Table 1] [Table ] (Unit: parts by weight)
Figure imgf000007_0001
[39] Note: prepared by grinding finely 140 parts by weight of a clear jellylike gel taken from the body of aloe vera leaves in 100 parts by weight of purified water using a blender and passing the ground gel through a sieve
[40] sodium polyoxyethylene lauryl sulfate [41] brewed vinegar containing 6 wt% of acetic acid [42] 4) diethanolamide [43] 5) EDTA [44] 2. Evaluation [45] 2-1. Evaluation of effects on skin and hair [46] The liquid body cleanser compositions prepared according to the compositions described in Table 1 were evaluated for their effects on skin moisture and hair texture. Five healthy adults were allowed to use the liquid body cleanser compositions of the Examples and Comparative Examples for one week each, and skin moisture levels and hair appearance were graded. Scores were divided by 10, and the mean values are given in Table 2, below.
[47] Table 2 [Table 2] [Table ]
Figure imgf000008_0001
[48] (5: excellent; 4: good; 3: ordinary) [49] 2-2. Evaluation of antifungal activity (reduction of fungal growth) [50] The liquid body cleanser compositions were assessed for antifungal activity by measuring reduction rates of fungal growth using a disk diffusion method. Trichophyton mentagrophytes, a fungus causing tinea, and Candida albicans, a cause of skin diseases, were used.
[51] T. mentagrophytes and C. albicans were cultured in Emmon's modification of Sabouraud's broth and YM broth, respectively, for 24 hrs. Each 24-h culture was adjusted to a turbidity of No. 0.5 McFarland standard, smeared onto a solid medium, and was allowed to air-dry for 3-5 min. Thereafter, a disk wet with the liquid body cleanser compositions of Examples and Comparative Examples was placed onto the solid medium. The plates were then incubated at 280C for 18 hrs. Diameters of growth inhibition zones around discs were determined using a ruler, and the results are given in Table 3, below.
[52] Table 3 [Table 3] [Table ] (Unit: mm)
[53] Note: distilled water (DW) as a negative control
[54] 2) a control for antifungal activity of the liquid body cleanser compositions of the
Examples
[55] As shown in Table 2, the liquid body cleanser compositions of Examples 1 and 2 were scored as 5 and were thus found to be effective in maintaining skin moisture balance and in improving hair texture. In contrast, the composition of Comparative Example 1, not containing vinegar, had an excellent score of 5 for hair texture, but was graded at a low score of 4 for skin moisturization. The composition of Comparative Example 2, containing lower concentrations of aloe vera gel and cocamidopropyl betaine, was found to have a low score of 4 for skin moisturization and a low score of 3 for hair texture.
[56] As shown in Table 3, the compositions of Examples 1 and 2 exhibited greater diameters of fungal growth inhibition zones around discs than those of Comparative Examples 1 and 2, indicating that Examples 1 and 2 had higher antifungal activity.
[57] Although the compositions of Comparative Examples 1 and 2 exhibited lower antifungal activity (lower effects on fungal growth inhibition) than that of the compositions of the Examples, Comparative Example 2 as well as Comparative Example 1, not containing vinegar, were found to have better effects on growth inhibition against T. mentagrophytes and C. albicans than a currently marketed product. These results indicate that the aloe vera gel imparts antifungal activity to Comparative Example 1, which does not contain vinegar.
[58] Taken together, the compositions of Examples 1 and 2 had better effects on skin moisturization and hair texture as well as on antifungal activity than the compositions of Comparative Examples 1 and 2.
[59] While the invention has been described and proven as excellent with reference to the preferred embodiments thereof, it is not intended to be limited by the embodiments. Therefore, it will be apparent to one skilled in the art that various substitutions, changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the technical spirit of the present invention.
