Abstract

A thin film magnetic head has a magnetoresistive element, and an upper magnetic shield layer and a lower magnetic shield layer which are arranged respectively on the upper and lower sides of the magnetoresistive element so as to sandwich the magnetoresistive element . The magnetoresistive element, the upper magnetic shield layer and the lower magnetic shield layer are electrically connected to one another. In the thin film magnetic head, an electrode terminal layer connected to the upper magnetic shield layer and that electrically connected to the lower magnetic shield layer are not included in an area regulating a shield shape. In the thin film magnetic head, the upper magnetic shield layer is composed of a first upper magnetic shield layer and a second upper magnetic shield layer which have no level difference respectively. The first upper magnetic shield layer and the second upper magnetic shield layer respectively have nearly constant thicknesses. Also disclosed is a magnetic recorder on which such a thin film magnetic head is located.
