Abstract
アスペクト比が4:3の画像の左右に付加される左右サイドマスクを正確に検出し、同画像をアスペクト比が16:9の画像に拡大して表示するプラズマ表示装置を提供することを課題とする。 左右サイドマスク検出部(1)により、第1サイズの画像と各サイドマスクとの各境界部分及び近辺の所定の領域について、入力映像信号(vi)の1の画素の輝度信号レベルと同1の画素の水平方向の一方に隣接する画素の輝度信号レベルとの差分絶対値が算出され、同各差分絶対値が同入力映像信号(vi)の垂直方向に累積され、累積結果に基づいて第1サイズの画像及び各サイドマスクの有無が検出される。また、左右サイドマスク検出時定数処理部(3)で、左右サイドマスク検出部(1)からの画像検出信号(vd)が時定数処理されるので、サイドマスクが正確に検出され、不必要にアスペクト比が変化せず、PDP(5)の残像が防止される。
