Abstract

A silica-based composite oxide fiber which is a continuous fiber having high strength and can prevent a noble-metal catalyst from sintering; and a catalyst fiber comprising the composite oxide fiber. The silica-based composite oxide fiber comprises a composite oxide phase composed of an oxide phase mainly made of a silica ingredient (first phase) and a metal oxide phase containing one or more metals other than silica (second phase). The fiber is characterized in that the content of at least one metallic element of the metal oxide(s) constituting the metal oxide phase increases so as to form a gradient toward the fiber surface, that the metal oxide phase is constituted of metallic particles, and that the fiber has pores having an average pore diameter of 2-30 nm formed among the particles and extending from the fiber surface toward inner parts of the fiber.
