  • This invention relates to an edge protector which is principally intended for protecting the edges of sheets of glass during handling and transportation.
  • the edge protector can also be used to protect other easily damaged edges, e.g. of metal sheets, furniture, pictures, marble, masonry, etc.
  • the edge protector also reduces the risk of injuries to handlers or bystanders or damage to other objects in the vicinity caused by contact with such edges.
  • Sheets of glass or other brittle materials such as marble are frequently broken during transportation and handling. It has been observed that glass sheets are most susceptible to damage at their edges, and more particularly at the junction between two substantially flat faces, due to direct contact between the junction region and another hard object. Such accidental contact during handling may cause the whole sheet to shatter, resulting in a risk of serious injury to handlers. Many other breakages occur during transportation as a result of contact between an edge of the sheet and a hard object, and for this reason it is necessary to carefully inspect and prepare any surfaces on which the sheet is to be stood. For example, if the sheet is inadvertently placed on a screw, nail or small stone during transportation in a motor vehicle the sheet will often be damaged, requiring the whole sheet to be scrapped.
  • the present invention seeks to provide a new and inventive form of edge protector which substantially reduces the risk of damage or injury by or to a protected object, and is easy to fit yet remains firmly in place for as long as required.
  • the present invention proposes an edge protector which comprises an extruded length of thermoplastic material which, in cross section, includes a hollow section and a pair of limbs which project from the hollow section to from a channel extending along one side thereof, and opposing interior faces of the limbs are each provided with at least one longitudinally- extending projection which is co-extruded from an elastomeric material.
  • the extrusion can be slid over an edge of a sheet of glass or similar material of an appropriate thickness such that the elastomeric projection or projections grip the enclosed edge of the sheet.
  • the elastomer tends to absorb any impacts to the thermoplastic extrusion, protecting the edge from damage.
  • each limb has a plurality of elastomeric projections, which are preferably in the form of inwardly- directed tongues. Initial fitting and retention of the extrusion may be assisted if the tongues are angled inwardly towards the hollow section. Furthermore, additional impact protection may be obtained by providing a face of the hollow section which is disposed between the projecting limbs with one or more ribs which are similarly co-extruded from elastomeric material.

  • the extrusion comprises an extruded length of semi-rigid thermoplastic material such as PVC.
  • the extrusion is of uniform cross-section, having a hollow box section 2 and a pair of limbs 3 and 4 which project from one side of the box section.
  • the box section 2 is substantially rectangular, having a pair of relatively narrow side walls 6 and 7 and a pair of wider side walls 8 and 9.
  • the narrow side walls 6 and 7 are extended beyond the side wall 8 to form the limbs 3 and 4, which, together with the wall 8, from a channel 10 extending along one side of the box section 2.
  • Opposing interior faces 14 and 15 of the limbs 3 and 4 are each provided with a number of longitudinally-extending gripping tongues 16.
  • the tongues 16 are each angled inwardly towards the adjacent wall 8 of the box section 2.
  • the face of the wall 8 which is disposed between the projecting limbs 3 and 4 is also provided with a pair of spaced ribs 18.
  • the tongues 16 and ribs 18 are both formed from a resilient elastomeric material which is co-extruded with the relatively rigid plastic forming the box section 2 and the limbs 3, 4.
  • a length of the co-extruded strip may be applied to each of its straight edges.
  • the extrusion is dimensioned such that the glass slides into the channel 10 between the two limbs 3 and 4, deflecting the tips of the tongues 16 inwardly. Due to the resilient deflection of the tongues 16 the edge protector can slide easily onto the glass using application of only moderate force, until the ribs 18 make contact with the edge of the glass. Once they have been applied the edge protector strips remain firmly attached to the glass in use since any tendency of the glass to move out of the channel tends to straighten the tongues 16 causing them to increase their grip on the glass sheet. Nevertheless, it is not difficult to remove the edge protectors when required simply by giving them a strong tug.
  • the edge protector may be flexible enough to be applied to a curved edge of a glass sheet. If the radius of curvature is large the flexibility of the edge protector can be increased by slitting the side limbs 3 and 4 at intervals in the case of a concave curve, or by cutting triangular notches in the limb in the case of a convex curve.
  • the edge protectors reduce risk of injury due to manual contact with the sharp edges and protect the edges of the sheet from chips or more serious damage.
  • the walls of the box section 2 can flex slightly to absorb impacts on the edge protector.
  • the resilient elastomeric tongues 16 and ribs 18 reduce transmission of impacts to the edges of the glass sheet since there is no direct contact between the relatively rigid part of the extrusion and the hard glass.
  • any shocks to the edge protector are distributed over an area of the side and edge faces of the glass.
  • transverse recesses may be machined into the box section 2 across the outer wall 9 to locate strapping bands which are often placed around sheets of glass in transit.
  • the edge protectors can be extruded in various widths in order to protect sheets of different thickness.

Abstract

Un protecteur de bordure, par exemple pour une feuille de verre, est extrudé à partir d'une matière thermoplastique telle que le PVC. L'extrusion comporte une section de boîte creuse (2) et une paire de branches (3 et 4) se projettent d'un côté de la section de boîte pour s'étendre sur des côtés opposés de la bordure à protéger. Des faces intérieures opposées des branches sont chacune dotées de languettes de préhension (16) s'étendant longitudinalement et formées dans une matière élastomère élastique co-extrudée avec les branches (3 et 4). Les languettes (16) sont inclinées vers l'intérieur vers la paroi adjacente (8) de la section de boîte. La paroi (8) est dotée de nervures espacées (18) qui sont également co-extrudées à partir d'une matière élastomère.
