[0005] ところで、近年では、さらに低消費電力を実現するメモリ性を有するコレステリック液 晶を用いた反射型の液晶表示装置の開発が進んでいる。ここで、そのような液晶表 示装置として、一般的なコレステリック液晶を用いた水平配向膜を有する液晶表示装 置について説明する。このような液晶表示装置は、コレステリック液晶が電圧の印加 に応じてプレーナ配列とフォーカルコニック配列に変化して双安定状態で存在する ため、メモリ性を有している。また、コレステリック液晶は、プレーナ配列において液晶 自体が入射光のうち特定波長の光を選択的に反射し、フォーカルコニック配列では 入射光を実質的に反射しなレ、とレ、う性質も有して!/、る。
[0006] また、このようなコレステリック液晶を用いた液晶表示装置に関して、その視野角を 拡大するために、垂直配向膜を用いた液晶表示装置が一般的に知られている。
[0007] 従来の一般的な垂直配向膜を用いた液晶表示装置において、垂直配向膜近傍の コレステリック液晶は、螺旋構造をとらず、ホメオト口ピック配向となっており、垂直配向 膜から遠ざかるにつれて、コレステリック液晶の自発的な捻れ力によって螺旋構造を
とっている。この結果、コレステリック液晶の螺旋構造は、その軸が適度に揺らぐため 視野角が広くなる。
[0008] さらに、このような液晶表示装置として、例えば、特許文献 1には、一対の透明基板 間に挟持され、電界の印加により光学的異方性が変化するコレステリック液晶と、一 対の透明基板のコレステリック液晶との対向面とは反対側に配置された偏光板とを備 えた液晶表示素子であって、基板の対向面表面に垂直配向膜が形成されているも のが開示されている。そして、このような構成によれば、コントラストが低下することが なぐ高速応答性、視野角特性に優れた表示素子を提供することができる、と記載さ れている。

発明が解決しょうとする課題
