Abstract

A tubular container (1) comprises a first tubular member (2) and a second tubular member (3). The first tubular member (2) has a cylindrical wall (4), a base (7) closing the cylindrical wall (4) at the bottom thereof, and a line of weakness (10) located intermediate the ends of the cylindrical wall (4). The second tubular member (3) has a cylindrical wall (5) and a top (9) closing the cylindrical wall (5) at one end thereof. The tubular members (2, 3) are telescopically arranged with the first tubular member (2) extending into the second tubular member so that the line of weakness (10) of the cylindrical wall (4) of the first tubular member (2) is located within the cylindrical wall (5) of the second tubular member (3). An adhesive (11) secures a portion of the cylindrical wall (4) of the first tubular member (2) located remote from the base (7) relative to the line of weakness to a portion of the cylindrical wall (5) of the second tubular member (3) so as to prevent said portion being removed from the second tubular member (3). In this way, in order to gain access to the contents of the container (1), the line of weakness (10) must be broken.

Description

TAMPER EVIDENT RE-CLOSABLE TUBULAR CONTAINER
This invention relates to a tubular container, and in the preferred embodiment provides a tubular container which is tamper evident and re-closable.
Tubular containers comprising co-axial cylinders, each closed at one end, which are mounted telescopically relative to each other are well known and, particularly when the cylinders are formed from spiral wound paperboard tubes, have well recognised advantages in terms of cost, ability to accept sophisticated graphics, and susceptibility to recycling. However, containers of this type known in the prior art do not incorporate any inherent tamper evident features and if tamper evidence is required this must be achieved by way of a separate shrink-fit sleeve or the like, thereby significantly reducing the otherwise inherent advantages of this type of container.
We have now devised a tubular containing co-axial cylinders which is tamper evident, and re-closable, yet which preserves the advantages of the cost etc associated with prior art designs.
In accordance with the first aspect of the present invention there is provided a tubular container comprising: a first tubular member having a cylindrical wall, a base closing the cylindrical wall at the bottom thereof, and a line of weakness located intermediate the ends of the cylindrical wall; a second tubular member having a cylindrical wall and a top closing the cylindrical wall at one end thereof, the tubular members being telescopically arranged with the line of weakness of the cylindrical wall of the first tubular member located within the cylindrical wall of the second tubular member; and adhesive securing a portion of the cylindrical wall of the first tubular member located remote from the base relative to the line of weakness to a portion of the cylindrical wall of the second tubular member.
With such an arrangement a tamper evident container can readily be produced and filled. Access to the interior of the container can only be obtained by breaking the line of weakness. Breakage of the line of weakness provides a tamper evident feature. However, because the line of weakness is, in the initial configuration of the tubular members, located within the cylindrical wall of the second tubular member, the container can readily be re-closed after breakage along the line of weakness.
Containers in accordance with embodiments of the present invention can be used for a wide range of products, for example comestible products.
The invention will be better understood from the following description of preferred embodiments thereof wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates schematically and in longitudinal cross-section a first embodiment of the invention and
Figure 2 shows a second embodiment of the invention.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 a tubular container 1 comprises a first tubular member 2 and a second tubular member 3. The tubular members 2,3 each comprise cylindrical walls 4,5 respectively. The cylindrical walls can be made of any suitable material, but in the preferred embodiment are made from spiral wound paperboard tubes. The lower end of the cylindrical wall 4, as viewed in Figure 1, is formed with an inwardly rolled bead 6 which supports a base 7 which may be made of any suitable material, for example paperboard. Similarly, the upper end of the cylindrical wall 5 (as viewed in the drawings) is formed with an inwardly rolled bead 8 which supports a top 9 of any suitable material, for example paperboard. The cylindrical walls 4,5 are arranged telescopically with each other to produce an enclosure.
The cylindrical wall 4 is formed with a line of weakness 10 which may be of any suitable form - for example a groove rolled into the outer surface of the cylindrical wall 4 to reduce the thickness thereof. The line of weakness 10 is located such that when the tubular members are assembled in a telescopic state illustrated in Figure 1 the line of weakness 10 is located within the cylindrical wall 5 of the second tubular member.
The cylindrical walls 4,5 are secured to each other by means of adhesive 1 1.
To use the container illustrated in Figure 1 the first and second tubular members are separately formed and supplied to a packaging line. On the packaging line the first tubular member 2 is filled with products and a band of adhesive is applied to the interior surface of the second tubular member adjacent the top 9 thereof. The tubular member is then assembled together into the telescopic condition illustrated in Figure 1. The clearance between the tubular members is relatively small and the band of adhesive applied to the interior of the second tubular member will, accordingly, contact the exterior surface of the first tubular member and bond the tubular members together. Once this status has been achieved access to the contents of the container may only be had by breaking the first tubular member along the line of weakness 10. This can readily be achieved by grasping the second tubular member in one hand and the exposed portion of the first tubular member in the other hand and rotating the grasped portions in opposite directions thereby breaking the first tubular member along the line of weakness 10. Thereafter, access may be had to the contents of the container. The container can be re-closed by locating the second tubular member on the lower part of the first tubular member, in which case engagement of the severed ends of the first tubular member will result in correct location of the second tubular member. However, the fact that the container has previously been opened will be readily apparent to anyone grasping the respective tubular members and pulling them apart since they will readily separate in contrast to the significant force necessary to separate them when the first tubular member is severed along the line of weakness 10.
A second embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 2. This embodiment repeats many of the features of the embodiment of Figure 1 and like reference numerals have been used on Figure 2 to identify portions corresponding to those of the embodiment of Figure 1.
In the embodiment of Figure 2 the inwardly rolled beads 6 and paperboard base 7 have been replaced by a plug base 12 which may be of any convenient form - for example a plastics plug secured by bonding or welding, or a metal plug secured by seaming. In the case of the embodiment of Figure 2 all the components except the plug 12 may be pre-assembled by the packaging manufacturer and supplied as a complete unit to the eventual user. The container is then filled through the base thereof and the closure 12 positioned and secured. Operation of the devices as described above with reference to Figure 1.
