[0003] 液晶表示装置の光利用効率を改善して表示性能を向上させるために、散乱型液 晶を用いた散乱型表示モードを利用することが提案されている。散乱型表示モード では、液晶層に印加する電圧により、液晶層を、光を透過する透過状態と、光を散乱 する散乱状態との間でスイッチングさせることができ、これを利用して表示を行う。この ような表示モードを利用した表示装置は、偏光板が不要なので、光利用効率を高め ることができる。また、視角依存性が少ないなどの利点も有する。

発明を実施するための最良の形態
[0034] 本発明は、散乱型表示モードを用いた表示装置において、背面基板における画素 電極と配線との間隔に回折防止層が配置されていることを特徴とする。本明細書で は、「回折防止層」とは、背面基板側から画素電極を通過した光と、隣接する画素電 極間、すなわち画素電極と配線 (ソースおよび Zまたはゲート配線)との間隔を通過 した光とによる回折光の生成を抑制する層をいう。
[0035] このような回折防止層は、背面基板側から上記間隔に入射する光を吸収する光吸 収層であってもよい。これにより、背面基板側から画素電極を通過した光のみが液晶 層に入射するので、回折光の生成が抑制され、その結果、表示特性の低下を抑える ことができる。あるいは、回折防止層として、画素電極の材料と同程度の屈折率を有 する材料を用いて高屈折率層を形成してもよい。画素電極と配線との間隔に高屈折 率層を形成すると、画素電極を通過する光および隣接する画素電極間を通過する光 のパスの光路長が略等しくなり、回折光の生成を低減できる。なお、本発明における 回折防止層は、背面基板における画素電極と配線との間隔の少なくとも一部に形成 されていればよい。

[0055] 本実施形態では、高屈折率層 32は次のような方法で形成されて 、る。まず、薄膜ト ランジスタ 13や配線 14、 15および画素電極 16が形成された背面基板 12の表面に、 二酸化チタン微粒子を含む透明榭脂材料の塗布液 (ラサ工業社製高屈折率膜形成 用塗布液 TI— 44)をスピンコーターで塗布することによって、背面基板 12における 凹凸を平坦化する。続いて、榭脂材料を 400°Cの温度で焼成し、屈折率が約 2. 0の 高屈折率層 32を得る。高屈折率層 32の厚さ dは、背面基板 12に形成された画素電 極 16や配線 14、 15などの要素の高さによって適宜選択される力 例えば 0. l ^ m 以上 1 m以下である。なお、本明細書では、「高屈折率層 32の厚さ d」は、図示する ように、高屈折率層 32のうち画素電極 16の上に位置する部分の厚さをいう。本実施 形態では、画素電極 16の厚さが 0. 15 /z m、配線 14、 15の厚さ力0. 3 mであるた め、高屈折率層 32の厚さ dを 0. 15 /z m以上 0. 3 m以下にすることが好ましい。

[0072] 比較例の表示装置は、散乱型液晶を用いた再帰性反射型液晶表示装置であり、 図 2 (a)および (b)を参照しながら説明した構造を有している。比較例では、前面基板 10および背面基板 12として、ガラス基板 (厚さ: 700 m)を用いた。また、散乱型液 晶として、高分子分散型液晶 (オン状態の屈折率:約 1. 5)、再帰性反射板 2として、 ピッチが 10 μ mのキュービックコーナーキューブアレイを用いた。画素電極 16は ITO 膜 (厚さ: 0. 15 ^ m,屈折率:約 2. 0)をパターユングすることによって形成し、その サイズは 60 mX 180 mとした。ソース配線 14およびゲート配線 15は、それぞれ 、タンタルおよびタングステンを用いて形成した。また、ソース配線 14と画素電極 16と の間隔 22およびゲート配線 15と画素電極 16との間隔 23は、いずれも 3 mとした。 なお、これらの間隔 22、 23には、高分子分散型液晶 (屈折率: 1. 5程度)が存在する
[0073] 実施例 1の表示装置は、図 4 (a)および (b)を参照しながら実施形態 1で説明した再 帰性反射型液晶表示装置である。実施例 1は、隣接する画素電極 16の間に光吸収 層 30が形成されている点以外は、比較例 1と同様の構成を有する。実施例 1におけ る光吸収層 30は、画素電極 16および配線 14、 15などが形成された背面基板 12の 表面に、スピンコート法を用いて黒色榭脂材料を 1 μ mの厚さで塗布した後、フォトリ ソグラフィーを用いてパターニングを行うことによって形成した。光吸収層 30以外の 構成要素は、比較例と同様の材料を用いて同様の方法で作製した。 [0074] 実施例 2の表示装置は、背面基板 12が前面基板 10よりも薄い点以外は、実施例 1 と同様の構成を有する。実施例 2における背面基板 12として、実施例 1や比較例で 用いたガラス基板 (厚さ: 700 μ m)の裏面に対してエッチングを行うことによって得ら れた、厚さが 100 /z mのガラス基板を用いた。このエッチング工程以外は、実施例 1と 同様の材料を用いて同様の方法で作製した。
[0075] 実施例 3の表示装置は、図 5を参照しながら実施形態 2で説明した再帰性反射型 液晶表示装置である。実施例 3は、背面基板 12と液晶層 1との間に高屈折率層 32が 形成されている点、および、背面基板 12が前面基板 10よりも薄い点で、比較例と異 なっている。高屈折率層 32は、画素電極 16や配線 14、 15などが形成された背面基 板 12の表面に透明榭脂 (ラサ工業社製高屈折率膜形成用塗布液 TI— 44)を塗布し た後、 400°Cで焼成することによって形成した。高屈折率層 32の厚さは 0. とし た。この高屈折率層 32により、画素電極 16と配線 14、 15との間隔 22、 23を埋めると ともに、背面基板 12における画素電極 16、配線 14、 15および TFTなどによる凹凸 を平坦化した。また、背面基板 12としては、実施例 2と同様に、ガラス基板の裏面を エッチングすることによって得られた厚さが 100 mのガラス基板を用いた。上記の 高屈折率層 32の形成およびガラス基板のエッチング工程以外は、比較例と同様の 材料を用いて同様の方法で作製した。
[0076] このようにして得られた比較例および実施例 1〜3の表示装置に対して、図 8に示す 測定系(ミノルタ社製 CM1000)を用いて、次のような方法で反射率の測定を行った
[0077] まず、白表示状態における反射率(白表示の明るさ)を測定した。サンプル素子 80 として、測定しょうとする表示装置を設置し、その液晶層 1を散乱状態とした。このサン プル素子 80に対して、光源 82および積分球 86を用いて全ての方向力ゝら光を入射さ せ、サンプル素子 80の基板に垂直な方向に反射する光の強度 Iwを受光器 84で測 定した。受光器 84における集光角は 10度とした。一方、この測定系に、表示装置の 代わりに、リファレンスとして完全拡散板を設置して、完全拡散反射板によって反射さ れる光のうち、完全拡散板に対して垂直な方向に向かう光の強度 Irを受光器 84で測 定した。上記光の強度 Iwの、リファレンスを用いた場合の光の強度 Irに対する比 (Iw Zlr) (%)を算出し、表示装置における白表示の明るさとした。
[0078] 続いて、黒表示状態における反射率 (黒表示の明るさ)を測定する。サンプル素子
80の液晶層 1を透過状態に切り替えた後、上記と同様にして、サンプル素子 80に対 して全方向力も光を入射させて、サンプル素子 80の基板に垂直な方向に反射する 光の強度 lbを受光器 84で測定した。このようにして得られた強度 lbの、上記リファレ ンスを用いた場合の光の強度 Irに対する比 (IbZlr) (%)を算出し、黒表示の明るさ とした。
[0079] さらに、上記のようにして得られた黒表示および白表示の明るさから、表示のコント ラスト比(白表示の明るさ Z黒表示の明るさ = IwZlb)を求めた。
[0080] 比較例および実施例 1〜3の表示装置における、白表示、黒表示の明るさおよびコ ントラスト比の測定結果を表 1に示す。

[0082] 表 1に示す結果から、本発明における回折防止層を備えた実施例 1〜3では、いず れも、比較例よりも黒表示の明るさ (反射率)が低ぐ黒表示特性が向上していること がわかる。比較例では、背面基板 12における画素電極 16と配線 14との間隔 22を通 過する光と、画素電極 16を通過する光とによって生成された回折光の一部が受光器 84によって受光されるが、実施例 1〜3では、回折防止層(光吸収層 30または高屈 折率層 32)によって上記回折光の生成が抑制されているので、受光器 84によって受 光される光の強度が低減されるからと考えられる。
[0083] また、実施例 1では、比較例よりも僅かであるが明るさが低下している。これは、光吸 収層 30によって、光の利用効率が低くなるからである。し力しながら、黒表示特性が 比較例よりも大幅に向上するため、結果的に、表示のコントラスト比は比較例よりも高 くなる。
[0084] 実施例 2および実施例 3では、比較例よりも白表示の明るさが向上している。これは 、図 7 (a)および (b)を参照しながら説明したように、背面基板 12を比較例よりも薄く することにより、再帰性反射板 2による反射光が、入射時に通過した画素と異なる画 素から出射することを抑制できるためと考えられる。従って、実施例 2および実施例 3 では、黒表示特性および白表示特性ともに大幅に向上でき、優れたコントラスト比が 得られる。
[0085] これらの結果、回折防止層による回折防止効果のみに着目すると、光吸収層 30の 方が高屈折率層 32よりも高い効果を有し、より高品位な黒表示を実現できることがわ かる。一方、高屈折率層 32は、白表示の明るさを確保しつつ、回折防止効果により 黒表示特性を向上できる利点がある。なお、いずれの回折防止層を用いた表示装置 であっても、再帰性反射板 2と液晶層 1との間に存在する背面基板 12を薄くすること により、従来の再帰性反射型表示装置よりも白表示の明るさを向上させることができ る。
[0086] 続いて、比較例および実施例 1の表示装置を用いて、黒表示状態における光の透 過強度を測定したので説明する。なお、測定は、各表示装置から再帰性反射板 2を 外して行った。
[0087] まず、透過強度の測定方法を説明する。測定には、図 9に示す測定系(大塚電子 製: LCD5200)を使用した。サンプル素子 90として、測定しょうとする表示装置を設 置し、平行光光源 92からの光を、サンプル素子 90における基板に垂直な方向カゝら 4 0度の角度で背面側力も入射させた。サンプル素子 90における液晶層 1を透過状態 (黒表示状態)とし、光源 92からサンプル素子 90に入射した光のうちサンプル素子 9 0の観察者側に透過した光の強度 Itを受光器 94で測定した。測定は、受光器 94を、 光源 92の出射方向(受光角 Θ :40度)に対して ± 10度の範囲(受光角 Θ : 30度〜 5 0度)で移動させて行った。受光角 Θは、図示するように、サンプル素子 90における 基板に垂直な方向に対する受光方向の角度を指す。
[0088] 一方、サンプル素子 90を設置せずに、上記の位置に固定された光源 92からの光 の強度 laを、光源 92の出射方向(受光角 Θ :40度)に配置した受光器 94で測定した 。得られた強度 (すなわち「空気」を透過した光の強度) laを 100%として、上記方法 で測定したサンプル素子 90を透過する光の強度 It力も透過強度 Tを算出した (T=It Zla(%))。
[0089] 図 10 (a)および (b)は、比較例および実施例 1の表示装置における受光角 Θと透 過強度 Tとの関係を表すグラフである。図 10 (a)および (b)は同じ結果を表している 力 透過強度 Tを示す縦軸のスケールが異なる。
[0090] まず、図 10 (a)に示すグラフから、受光角 Θが 40度のとき、比較例および実施例 1 の透過強度は最大となり、比較例の透過強度は実施例 1の透過強度よりも大きいこと がわかる。これは、実施例 1では、背面基板 12に配置された光吸収層 30により、開 口率が低下するためと考えられる。
[0091] また、図 10 (b)に示すグラフによると、受光角 Θが 30〜36度および 44〜50度のと き、実施例 1の透過強度は比較例の透過強度よりも低減されており、その低減幅は、 上述した開口率の低下による低減幅よりも十分大きくなつている。比較例では、回折 光の一部が受光器 94で受光されるので、上記受光角 Θにおける透過強度が増加す る力 実施例 1では、そのような回折光が生成されないので、上記受光角 Θにおける 透過強度の増加が抑えられて ヽるからと考えられる。
[0092] この結果により、光吸収層 30による回折防止効果が確認された。なお、高屈折率 層 32による回折防止効果も同様の方法で確認できる。
産業上の利用可能性
[0093] 本発明によれば、散乱型表示モードを用いた表示装置において、回折光の生成を 抑制できるので、回折光に起因する表示特性の低下を抑えて、表示のコントラストを 向上させることができる。
[0094] 本発明は、高分子分散型液晶を用いた透過型ある!/、は反射型液晶表示装置に好 適に用いられる。このうち、再帰性反射板を備えた再帰性反射型液晶表示装置では 、回折光が表示特性に与える影響が顕著であるため、このような表示装置に本発明 を適用すると、表示特性をより効果的に改善できるので有利である。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] 互いに対向して配置された一対の基板と、
前記一対の基板の一方に形成された複数の画素電極と、
前記一対の基板の他方に形成された対向電極と、
前記複数の画素電極と前記対向電極との間に設けられ、光を透過する透過状態と 光を散乱する散乱状態との間で状態が切り替えられ得る変調層と、
を備えた表示装置であって、
前記一方の基板に形成され、それぞれ、対応する画素電極に電気的に接続された 複数のスイッチング素子と、
前記一方の基板に前記複数の画素電極と間隔を空けて配置された複数の配線と、 前記配線と前記画素電極との前記間隔に配置された回折防止層と
をさらに備えた表示装置。
[2] 前記回折防止層は、前記間隔に入射する光を吸収する請求項 1に記載の表示装 置。
[3] 前記回折防止層は、前記画素電極の材料における屈折率の ± 10%以内の屈折 率を有する材料から構成される請求項 1に記載の表示装置。
[4] 前記回折防止層は、 1. 8以上 2. 2以下の屈折率を有する材料から構成される請求 項 1に記載の表示装置。
[5] 前記表示装置は、前記一方の基板を挟んで前記変調層の反対側に配置された反 射層をさらに備える請求項 1から 4のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
[6] 前記反射層は再帰性反射特性を有する請求項 5に記載の表示装置。
[7] 前記一方の基板の厚さは前記他方の基板の厚さよりも小さい請求項 5または 6に記 載の表示装置。
