Il est déjà connu de rendre hydrophobe un substrat avec une composition à base de méthylsiliconate, par exemple selon le brevet EP 889' 109. Selon le brevet EP l'253'178, une autre solution pour hydrophober un substrat consiste à traiter avec un mélange de méthylsiliconate de sodium ou de potassium et de silicate de sodium ou de potassium. Afin de disposer d'une préparation stable au stockage, elles doivent être stabilisées par un fort excès moléculaire d'agent alcalin. La solution alcaline est appliquée à la surface du sol par voie topique, s'il s'agit de faire un traitement in-situ, ou encore de mélanger ladite préparation à un substrat granulaire dans un mélangeur solide/liquide. Les surfaces traitées humides sont exposées au séchage à l'air ambiant. Au cours de cette étape, une modification de l'alcalinité à lieu (diminution du pH) suite au phénomène de la carbonatation, c-à.d. par l'absorption du gaz carbonique ambiant provoquant ainsi la polymérisation du principe actif. La préparation commercialisée est un concentré stabilisé, laquelle est fortement diluée avant application. Il est apparu que tant la solution concentrée, stockée dans des récipients insuffisamment étanches que les solutions diluées lors des applications sur le terrain perdent leur activité hydrophobantes suite à une polymérisation induite spontanément suite à la carbonatation.
