Exemple1: On dissout16 kg die borax commercial ordi naire dans7,5 1 d'eau bouillante.

Composition intended to to be used for the destruction of weeds and for defoliating plants and process for the preparation of this composition. The present invention relates to a composition intended to to be -used for the destruction of weeds and for the defoliating of plants, for example cotton. and to a process for the preparation of this composition.
It has long been known that (sodium chlorate is an effective herbicide in solution, for example at a concentration of around 60 g / l. We also know that chlorate (sodium accelerates the combustion of inflammable substances. Thus, when we have spread -a solution of of sodium chlorate on maleval, its herbs and that the grasses are soiled and dried, the residual sodium chlorate on dry grasses makes them flammable. This increases the danger of fire when this herbicide is used along roads, (railroads and over large areas (the ground.
Borax (Na #> B-107) is also known to exhibit certain herbicidal properties, although it is. not as effective for this purpose as sodium chlorate. It is also known that (. flammable materials treated with borax become less flammable.
This gave rise to the idea of adding borax a-Li sodium chlorate, with the aim of reducing the risk of fire from destroyed grasses to using 'such a mixture. The difficulty, however, was that borax is not very soluble in water; if sodium chlorate is used at a concentration of 120 gâ, it is only possible to introduce 30 gil of borax in the solution, and this quantity does not pro produced no significant reduction in inflammation caused by sodium chlorate.
The invention aims at to remedy these inconveniences.
It has been found that a polyborate of an alkali metal of the formula, general Me2O - (B-0.3) x, in which 31e represents -an alkali metal and x represents a number between 4 , 16 and 7, and pl-Lie particularly sodium pentaborate (Na2B, 0016 - 10 1-120), is notably more soluble in water than , ordinary borax or # boric acid Iiii itself,
and renders sprayed weeds less flammable with a composition containing a mixture of an alkali metal chlorate and such a polyborate. Such a composition dissolves much faster in water than a similar composition containing borax or boric acid. The polyborate makes the solution acidic and thus increases the herbicidal effectiveness of such a composition.
The composition according to the invention is characterized in that it contains a chlorate of an alkali metal: and a polyborate of an alkali metal of general formula Me2O - (B.03), where Me represents the alkali metal and x represents a number between 4.16 and 7, the polyborate and the chlorate being in the form of a homogeneous intimate mixture.
The object of the inv-entiçn includes a process for the preparation of such a composition, characterized in that a chlorate of an alkali metal is intimately mixed with a polyborate of alkali metal of the formula Me2O - (B #> 0, q) ,, where Me represents an alkali metal and x represents a number between 4.16 and 7, so to </ B> obtain a homogeneous composition in which the constituents do not separate.
The proportions of metal chlorate alca lin -and metal polyborate! alkali in the herbicidal composition can vary within wide limits. For practical considerations, however, it is appropriate to adjust the proportions to 25-60 1 / o by weight for the chlo rate and to 75-40% by weight. weight for the polyborate, ffl proportions being calculated on the total weight of the. dry composition. A particularly useful composition contains from 40 to 50 0 / & of sodium chlorate and. from 50 to 40 1 / o of sodium pentaborate.
The composition according to the invention is suitable, in particular, for the stripping of cotton; it has uniform efficiency and safety of use, at a reasonable price. The composition can be used in solution at a rate of 1380 to 3650 g per hectare.
Among the polyborates that can be used, we can cite Na2B10016 (x = 5), NaoB12019 (x = 6), Na2BI4022 (x = 7), and their mixtures for which x is not an integer.

Polyborates have a marked effect on pll. For example, two samples of commercial sodium chlorate, of different origin, dissolved in tap water (pl, 7.0) at a ratio of 120 g! L, give solutions of pH 9.4 and 7.4 respectively. When these solutions are diluted with tap water, until a concentration of 50 g / l is obtained, the pl is reduced to 9.3 and 7.05 respectively.
However, if one dissolves in -each solution 70 g of sodium pentaborate before diluting to the concentration of 50 < / B> gIl de sodium chlorate, Si pl,
this latter resulting in solution 'both is case diluted is to of two 7.3 times its volume, the pH increased to 7.8, and if diluted to three times its volume, the pH increases to 8.05.
When using a mixture containing 45% sodium chlorate and 55 11 / o sodium pentaborate at a concentration of 120 g / l, we obtain solutions whose pl- is between 6.8 and 7.3, depending on the degree of purity of the raw materials.
The composition of the invention is prepared, preferably , by crystallizing together the polyborate and the chlorate from from an aqueous solution of these. In all cases, we must obtain an intimate homogeneous mixture (the latter term being taken in its physicochemical sense), in which the particles of the constituents, namely namely the chlorate, and the pentaborate, do not do not separate when the composition is subjected to more or less prolonged storage before use.
According to a preferred embodiment, the novel composition is prepared by mixing sodium chlorate and. sodium polyborate in water, heating the resulting mixture to remove excess water in the amount needed to provide the water for crystallization of the polyborate, & - sodium and cooling the mixture, so that the product obtained, after cooling,
constitutes a homogeneous mixture of dry appearance of the sodium key chlorate and the hydrated sodium key polyborate.
The following examples illustrate different ways of preparing the new composition.
Example 1: 16 kg ordinary commercial borax is dissolved in 7.5 1 of boiling water. Immediately add 15.7 kg of boric acid to 99.5% (preferably pulverized). These compounds react to give 25 kg of sodium pentaborate (decahydrate). Heat 'the mixture with stirring until the temperature reaches approximately, 11211 C . At this moment, stop the heating, add 20.4 kg of chlorate, sodium and stir jLisqu # * to complete cooling.
The resulting mixture constitutes 45.3 kg of the product which appears dry, crumbly, and easily crushed. At the temperature cited, such an amount of water has been removed that the remaining amount constitutes the water of crystallization of the pentaborate.
Example 2: According to an a-Liter procedure, after adding to boiling water the same quantities of borax and boric acid as in Example 1, </ B > add 20.5 kg of sodil-un chlorate and continue heating until reaching the boiling point, approximately 1µ0l ' 0. At this point, the heating is stopped, the mixture is stirred and stirred in the same way as before until it cools.
The resulting mixture constitutes 45.3 kg of a product practically identical to that of Example 1. Example 3: Dissolve the same key quantities as in the example, 1 in 171 liters of cold water. The solution obtained can either be used directly for the destruction of weeds or defoliating, or dilute the solution with a volume of 378 liters to obtain a concentration of 120 g < / B> per liter.
The following composition may additionally contain inert materials and other inactive ingredients which may have different action, such as, for example, hygroscopic agents, wetting agents, etc.
In addition to Li-Li of sodi-Luu salts, corresponding salts of other alkali metals can be used, for example potassium chlorate and polyborate potassium.
To demonstrate the difference which exists between the compositions in accordance with with the invention, on the one hand, and compositions of conventional type, not in accordance with the invention, on the other hand, as regards to their flame-retardant power, and their herbicidal activity, we will still give some indications on the results obtained in tests to which conforming and non-conforming compositions have been subjected to the invention, respectively. Details of the materials and proportions used in these tests and the results obtained are summarized in Table I.
The flame-retardant power is determined as follows: A piece of canvas is soaked in an aqueous solution of the. composition to examine, squeeze out the excess liquid, dry the canvas and burn it. When the canvas thus treated has a low resistance to leu, it burns easily and completely either as quickly or more quickly than a piece of the same treated lion water. Good designates the flame retardant power of a composition when a piece of canvas treated with a solution of this composition burns less quickly than a piece of untreated canvas and the flame dies before the canvas is completely consumed.
The designation very good applies to cases where the burn is slow and stops when one-third to one-half of the canvas is consumed. The excellent designation applies to cases where the flame dies so quickly that less than 10 1 / o of the canvas is consumed.
