Abstract
A container (10) comprises a body (12) having a hollow (14) therein for receiving objects and an opening (16) in a wall of the body (12) to allow objects to be inserted into the hollow (14) . A mounting member (18) is used to mount the container (10) to an external structure (20) and a connecting member (24) allows for movable connecting of the body (12) to the mounting member (18) so that the body (12) can be rotated with respect to the mounting member (18) to allow the contents of the hollow (14) to be removed when the container (10) is in use. An example application of the container (10) is for cigarettes.
Description
A CONTAINER
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
THIS invention relates to a container.
Various containers for discarded cigarette butts and other rubbish are located at places where they find use. However, these containers are prone to being stolen.
The present invention seeks to address this.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention there is provided a container including:
a body having a hollow therein for receiving objects and an opening in a wall of the body to allow objects to be inserted into the hollow;
a mounting member for mounting the container to an external structure; and
a connecting member for movably connecting the body to the mounting member so that the body can be rotated with respect to the mounting member to allow the contents of the hollow to be removed when the container is in use.
The body may further include a lid which can be removed to allow access to the hollow.
The body may further include a plate located inside the hollow against which cigarettes can be extinguished.
In addition, odour reducing means located in the hollow limits or remove the odour associated with the objects inserted in the container.
The odour reducing means may include a material impregnated with an odour reducing agent and/or an air freshener.
The odour reducing means may have attachment means to secure the odour reducing means to the back of the plate.
Preferably, the connecting member connects the body to the mounting member in a manner which allows the body to be moved between a first
position and a second position wherein when the body is in the first position the body cannot be rotated with respect to the mounting member and when the body is in the second position it can be rotated with respect to the mounting member.
The connecting member may further include a spring that biases the body into the first position.
In a second embodiment, a container includes:
a body having a hollow therein for receiving cigarettes and an opening in a wall of the body to allow cigarettes to be inserted into the hollow; and
a plate located inside the hollow against which cigarettes can be extinguished.
In a third embodiment, a container includes:
a body having a hollow therein for receiving cigarettes and an opening in a wall of the body to allow cigarettes to be inserted into the hollow; and
odour reducing means located in the hollow to limit or remove the odour associated with the objects inserted in the container.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 shows a container according to the present invention with a part of the wall of the container cut away;
Figure 2 is a cross section through the container showing the connecting member;
Figure 3 shows the container connected to an external structure and in the normal use position; and
Figure 4 shows the container connected to an external structure while being rotated and emptied.
DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT
Figure 1 illustrates a container 10 according to the present invention with a part of the wall of the container cut away.
The container 10 has a body 12 having a hollow 14 therein for receiving objects, and an opening 16 in a wall of the body 12 to allow objects to be inserted into the hollow.
The objects may be cigarette butts that are discarded after the cigarette has been smoked.
A mounting member 18 is used to mount the container 10 to an external structure, typically to the wall 20 of a building, for example.
The mounting member may have holes therein through which bolts or screws 22 can be passed to connect the container 10 to the wall.
A connecting member 24 movably connects the body 12 to the mounting member 18 so that the body 12 can be rotated with respect to the mounting member to allow the contents of the hollow to be removed when the container is in use.
The body 12 may further include a lid 26 which can be removed to allow access to the hollow (see Figure 4).
The body 12 may further include a plate 28 located inside the hollow against which cigarettes can be extinguished. In the illustrated embodiment, the plate 28 is connected to the lid 26 so that when the lid is removed, the plate is also removed.
The back of the extinguishing plate 28 may carry odour reducing means to limit or remove the odour associated with the extinguished cigarettes. The odour reducing means typically comprises a material impregnated with an odour reducing agent and may further include an air freshener. The odour reducing means has attachment means, such as an adhesive layer or a clip to secure the odour reducing means to the back of the plate 28. The odour reducing means may also be used in combination with an oxygen reducing agent, which would assist in extinguishing cigarettes once placed in the container. The odour reducing means and oxygen reducing agent will preferably be replaceable periodically.
Preferably, the connecting member 24 connects the body 12 to the mounting member 18 in a manner which allows the body to be moved between a first position illustrated in Figure 3 and a second position wherein when the body is in the first position the body cannot be rotated with respect to the mounting member and when the body is in the second position it can be rotated with respect to the mounting member.
This is because a lug 30 locates in a hole in the body 12 when the body is in the first position thus preventing it from being rotated.
The connecting member 18 further includes a spring 32 that biases the body into the first position.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate the operation of the container.
In Figure 3, the container is in normal use and objects which are to be discarded are placed in the opening 16.
The discarded objects are stored in the container until it needs to be cleaned.
When the container needs to be cleaned, the container is pulled slightly away from the wall into the second position in which it is able to rotate into the position illustrated in Figure 4. With the lid 26 removed the contents of the container are emptied into another container for removal.
It will be appreciated that while the container can be rotated, it cannot be removed completely and thus the container is prevented from being stolen.
