Description

Description
FRONT PARKING MIRROR AND PARKING MIRROR
CAMERA
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a front parking mirror for an automobile, and more particularly, to a front parking mirror for an automobile, which can assist an automobile driver in accurately estimating how close the left or right edge of a front bumper of the automobile is to an obstacle (for example, parked automobile) when the driver tries to park the automobile, having a hood extending forward from a driver's seat by a long length, in the case of front parking. Background Art
[2] Considering the prior art in relation to the present invention, a variety of patents related to automotive mirrors, for example, which are entitled "an automatic measuring device having a side mirror shape and an automatic measuring method using the same", "a defrosting air injection system for automotive mirrors", and "spring installation structure for automotive mirrors", have been already filed and known. However, no technologies, related to a front parking mirror or front parking mirror camera for an automobile, which is the subject matter of the present invention, have been known yet.
[3] Generally, it is difficult to correctly park an automobile in one attempt. In the case of common drivers except for persons having an outstanding sense of space required for parking or the staff of parking places, they must move an automobile into and out of a parking spot repeatedly. According to statistics examined in Korea, drivers tend to move an automobile forward and backward repeatedly an average of approximately three to eight times upon front parking. Such a difficulty in front parking requires a lot of time to park, and causes unnecessary consumption of energy of drivers. Disclosure of Invention Technical Problem
[4] Therefore, the present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and it is an object of the present invention to provide an auxiliary parking device which can completely eliminate the above described problems related to front parking, and can assist an automobile driver in easily completing front parking within a short time.
Technical Solution
[5] In accordance with the present invention, the above and other objects can be accomplished by the provision of a front parking mirror for an automobile, which can assist an automobile driver in accurately estimating how close the left or right edge of a front bumper of the automobile is to an obstacle (for example, parked automobile) when the driver tries to park the automobile, having a hood extending forward from a driver's seat by a long length, in the case of front parking. The front parking mirror of the present invention is characterized in that: the front parking mirror is fixed at a position close to a left or right rear door while being located at the same horizontal plane as a side mirror or at a higher or lower height that is regulated in accordance with the length and height of the automobile, to provide an automobile driver with a field of vision in front of the driver; the front parking mirror is attached to a rectangular panel provided at a rear quarter panel of an automobile body, the rectangular panel being slidable to be inserted into and protruded from the quarter panel in a direction perpendicular to the quarter panel; and the rectangular panel is manually or automatically slid to be received in a parking mirror reservoir defined in the automobile body by passing through a slit formed at the quarter panel when the parking mirror is not used.
Advantageous Effects
[6] In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, when an obstacle, for example, parked automobile, is located near the left or right edge of a front bumper of an automobile, the front parking mirror can form an image of the obstacle on a mirror plate attached to a front surface of a rectangular panel thereof. Since a side mirror of the automobile is located at the same or corresponding horizontal plane as the mirror plate to face the mirror plate, the image, formed on the mirror plate, is secondarily formed on the side mirror. As a result, an automobile driver can observe the image formed on the mirror plate by use of the side mirror, thereby accurately estimating how close the left or right edge of the front bumper is to the obstacle.
[7] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, the mirror plate of the front parking mirror may be substituted by a small camera. Similar to the mirror plate, the small camera is fixed to the rectangular panel, and is used to catch the field of vision in front of the driver for observing the obstacle located near the left or right edge of the front bumper. In this case, a monitor is provided at a dashboard of the automobile such that it is connected to the camera via a wire, to show the field of vision captured by the camera. As a result, the driver can conveniently confirm the obstacle by observing the monitor without looking in the side mirror. Brief Description of the Drawings
[8] The above and other objects, features and other advantages of the present invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
[9] FIG. 1 is a perspective view schematically illustrating a parking mirror in accordance with the present invention, which protrudes outward from an automobile body when in use;

[12] FIG. 4 is a view illustrating the parking mirror of the present invention, which shows a front visual field of the automobile driver;
[13] FIG. 5 A is an enlarged view of the parking mirror of FIG. 1 when in use;
[14] FIG. 5B is an enlarged view of the parking mirror, which is completely inserted into a quarter panel;
[15] FIG. 5C is an enlarged view illustrating a camera for substituting the parking mirror in accordance with the present invention; and
[16] FIG. 6 is a view illustrating a monitor on a dashboard, which is connected to the camera of FIG. 5C via a wire. Mode for the Invention
[17] Now, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be explained in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[18] Referring to the accompanying drawings, a front parking mirror 10 according to the present invention is designed to be fixed at a position close to a left or right rear door 11 while being located at the same horizontal plane as a side mirror 12, to provide an automobile driver with a field of vision in front of the driver. Alternatively, it will be appreciated that the installation position of the front parking mirror 10 may be regulated in accordance with the length and height of an automobile. In the present invention, the front parking mirror 10 is attached to a rectangular panel 14 provided at a rear quarter panel 13 of an automobile body. The rectangular panel 14 is slidable to be inserted into and protruded from the quarter panel 13 perpendicular to the quarter panel 13. Upon front parking of an automobile, the parking mirror 10 is able to assist an automobile driver in accurately estimating how close the left or right edge of a front bumper of the automobile is to an obstacle (for example, parked automobile). When it is unnecessary to use the parking mirror 10, for example, during traveling of the automobile, it is desirable that the rectangular panel 14 be manually or automatically slid to be inserted into a parking mirror reservoir defined in an automobile body by passing through a slit 15 formed at the quarter panel 13. This is for the sake of preventing the parking mirror 10 from causing resistance against the traveling of the automobile. To achieve the sliding of the parking mirror 10, in an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the parking mirror 10 may be connected to an automatic control device (not shown). With the operation of the automatic control device, the parking mirror 10 is able to be automatically protruded from the quarter panel 13 if a velocity of the automobile is less than 10 km/hour, in order to assist easy parking of the driver. The protruded parking mirror 10 is adapted to be again inserted into the automobile body as soon as an automobile engine is turned off. Conversely, if the velocity of the automobile is more than 10 km/hour upon a normal traveling of the automobile, the parking mirror 10 is able to be automatically inserted into the automobile body under the operation of the automatic control device. Also, for example, when the automobile travels long distances, the parking mirror 10 is able to be continuously received in the automobile body, regardless of the velocity of the automobile, via operation of a switch. Alternatively, it will be appreciated that the parking mirror 10 may be designed to be manually operated such that it is selectively operable as occasion demands.
[19] The front parking mirror 10 of the present invention having the above described configuration is able to form an image of an obstacle, which is located near the left or right edge of the front bumper, on a mirror plate 16 attached to a front surface of the rectangular panel 14. The image, formed on the mirror plate 16, is secondarily formed on the side mirror 12, which is located at the same or corresponding horizontal plane as the mirror plate 16 to face the mirror plate 16. Thereby, the driver is able to observe the image formed on the mirror plate 16 by use of the side mirror 12, thereby accurately estimating how close the left or right edge of the front bumper is to the obstacle (for example, parked automobile).
[20] In another embodiment of the present invention, the front parking mirror 10 may use a small camera 20 instead of the mirror plate 16 attached to the rectangular panel 14. The small camera 20 is fixed to the rectangular panel 14 to catch the field of vision in front of the driver for observing an obstacle located near the left or right edge of the front bumper. In this case, a monitor 21 is provided at a dashboard to be connected to the camera 20 via a wire, to show the field of vision captured by the camera 20. As a result, the driver is able to confirm the obstacle by observing the monitor 21 without looking in the side mirror.
[21] As stated above, the rectangular panel 14 is configured to be inserted into the parking mirror reservoir defined in the automobile body by passing through the linear slit 15 that is vertically formed at the quarter panel 13. With this configuration, when the parking mirror 10 is not used, the rectangular panel 14 is able to slide horizontally in a direction perpendicular to the quarter panel 13, so as to be received and hidden in the automobile body. Here, the vertical length of the slit 15 is determined based on the size of the mirror plate 16 (more particularly, the vertical length of the mirror plate 16) and in turn, the size of the mirror plate 16 is determined based on the size of the automobile body provided with the parking mirror 10. Preferably, the vertical length of the slit 15 may be less than 10 cm. Also, the horizontal width of the slit 15 may be ap- proximately 5 cm, and preferably, may be less than 2 cm. It is desirable that the vertical length and horizontal width of the slit be reduced to the maximum extent. This has the effect of reducing the volume of the parking mirror reservoir. Also, the horizontal length of the mirror plate 16, that is, the horizontal length of the rectangular panel 14 has a value equal to or less than 18 cm.
[22] In an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the rectangular panel 14 may be configured to be folded toward an outer surface of the quarter panel 13 about a contact line between the quarter panel 13 and the rectangular panel 14, so as to come into contact, at the front surface thereof where the mirror plate 16 is attached, with the quarter panel 13. In this case, the relevant outer surface of the quarter panel 13 is recessed to receive the mirror plate 16, more particularly, the rectangular panel 14. In a state wherein the rectangular panel 14 is completely received, a rear surface of the rectangular panel 14 to be exposed to the outside defines a contour corresponding to the quarter panel 13 Industrial Applicability
[23] As apparent from the above description, the present invention provides a front parking mirror or parking mirror camera for an automobile, which can provide an automobile driver with a field of vision in front of the driver, whereby the driver can observe an obstacle near a front bumper of the automobile in the case of front parking. With the use of the front parking mirror or parking mirror camera, the driver is able to easily perform front parking of the automobile at a desired parking spot within a minimum time without a risk of collision with any dangerous obstacle or other automobiles. Also, the driver is able to easily get out of a small parking spot by use of the front parking mirror or parking mirror camera of the present invention.
[24] Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims
