Abstract

A self-boring rivet capable of tightening even hard plate members such as hard steel plates and a tightened structure of the plate members using the rivet. The self-boring rivet (1) comprises, for example, a head part and a shaft part extending from the lower face of the head part and is characterized in that a shaft hole is not formed in the shaft part or the inner diameter of the shaft hole formed in the shaft part is equal to or less than 60% of the nominal diameter of the shaft part and the effective depth of the shaft hole is equal to or less than 44% of the length of the shaft part. Accordingly, by reducing the inner diameter of the shaft hole or eliminating the shaft hole, the sheared portion (X) of the front side plate member (P1) is compressed between the tip of the shaft part and the surface of the rear side plate member (P2) and laterally expanded, and formed integrally with the shaft part so as to surround the tip part of the shaft part. Thus, since the tip of the shaft part is increased in diameter, tightening action is produced.
