Abstract

A fastener has a head with cross recess and a superimposed six lobed recess so that it can be engaged by cross or six lobed driver tools.

Description

Combined hexiobular and cross drive recess for fastcurs or nxings The
invention relates to a drive recess of a kind intended primarily for use with fasteners and fixings, which is hereinafter referred to as a combined hexlobular/cross recess.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
There are many existing methods for driving a fixing or fastener into wood or other material by which a recess is formed in the head of the fixing or fastener whereby a driver bit is inserted into that recess and turned to drive the fixing or fastener into the wood or other material. two of most common drive recess types are the hexlobular recess and the cross recess.
The hexiobular recess allows more driving torque to be applied to a fastener or fixing than a cross recess because it suffers far less slippage (cam-out) where the driver bit slips out of the recess while the fastener or fixing is being driven into wood or other material. However, the cross recess is more popular in certain countries, notably the United Kingdom, than a hexiobular recess; also, it is easier to engage the cross recess driver bit in mechanically fed applications.
DESCRIPTION OF THE iNVENTION
An objective of this invention is to provide a driver recess for a fastener or fixing that combines both a hexlobular recess and the cross recess in the same recess, thereby offering the hexiobular recess's superior driving torque and the cross recess's ubiquity and ease of engagement on the same fixing or fastener.
In accordance with the objective the combined hexlobular/cross recess is characterised in that the hexlobular recess is formed within the cross recess.
The combined hexiobular/cross recess can be utilised on fixings and fasteners with several head types, examples of which are: countersunk head; round head; pan head; raised countersunk.
The combined hexiobular/cross recess can be utilised on fixings or fasteners made from several types of metal, examples of which are: carbon steel, stainless steel and brass.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIGURE 1 shows a conventional hexlobular recess.
FIGURE 2 shows a conventional cross recess.
FIGURE 3 shows the combined hexlobular/cross recess.
FIGURE 4 shows the combined hexlobular/cross recess driver bit.
The recess of the invention as shown in figure 3 combines the hexiobular recess as shown in fig 1 (1) with the cross recess as shown in figure 2 (2) allowing a fastener or fixing to be driven into wood or other material with a cross recess driver bit.
The recess of the invention as shown in figure 3 combines the hexiobular recess as shown in fig 1 (1) with the cross recess as shown in figure 2 (2) allowing a fastener or fixing to be driven into wood or other material with a hexiobular recess driver bit.
The recess of the invention as shown in fig 3 places the hexiobular recess as shown in fig 1 (1) within the cross recess as shown in fig 2 (2) in such a way as to allow four (8,9,10,11) of the six hexiobular lobes (8,9,10,11,12,13) to be placed outside the wings (4,5,6,7) of the said cross recess.
The recess of the invention as shown in fig 3 allows two of the hexiobular lobes (12,13) of the hexiobular recess as shown in fig 1 (1) to sit inside two of the wings (4,6) of the cross recess as shown in fig 2 (2).
The recess of the invention as shown in fig 3 combines the hexlobular recess as shown in fig 1 (14) with the cross recess as shown in fig 2 (16) to form a hexlobular/cross recess that allows eight points (4,5,6,7,8,9, 10,11) of driving torque to be applied by the combined hexlobular/cross recess driver bit as shown by fig 4 (15).

Claims (6)
