Definitions
- This invention relates to detectors of alcoholic vapour and is intended to provide a convenient and reliable apparatus for the detection of alcohol on the breath of a person driving or about to drive a motor vehicle.
- a detector of exhaled alcohol vapour comprises an enclosure incorporated in or mounted on a sun visor of a motor vehicle, an sensor of alcohol vapour within the enclosure, the enclosure including at least one aperture by which the vapour can reach the sensor and an electrical circuit for providing an indicating signal in response to the sensor.
- the enclosure may be formed within the visor or may comprises a case adapted for attachment to the visor.
- the case may have two arms that can embrace part of the visor.
- the detector may include an electrically operated indicator or alarm responsive to the indicating signal.
- the indicator may be a lamp positioned on the visor, or elsewhere, such on the windscreen or the outside of the vehicle.
- Figure 1 is a diagram of one embodiment of the invention.
- FIG. 2 is a diagram of another embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 3 is a schematic diagram of an electrical circuit which may be used with the invention.
- Figure 4 is a drawing of a motor vehicle illustrating various warning devices that may be used with the invention.
- Figure 1 illustrates a detector which is incorporated within a sun visor of a motor vehicle 1.
- the visor 2 is customarily disposed on a pivoted spindle 3 above the head of the driver and comprises a flap which in well known manner can be moved from a stowed position to one in which the visor partially shields the field of view of the driver through the top part of the windscreen 4.
- the movement of the sun visor is indicated by the double-headed arrow A.
- the visor in this embodiment is hollow to provide an enclosure for the detector. At its lower margin the visor ha apertures such as the aperture 5, by way of which expired breath B, shown in dashed lines, from the driver sitting in a normal position can enter the enclosure.
- Fixed within the enclosure is a sensor 6 for alcohol-bearing vapour and an associated electrical circuit which when the concentration of the alcohol in the vapour exceeds some predetermined value, provides an output electrical indicating signal.
- the sensor may be as described in US-4868545. This electrical signal may cause the illumination of a lamp 7 disposed on the visor.
- the lamp 8 which may be illuminated in response to the indicating signal.
- the lamp is disposed in a holder which may be fixed by a suction pad to the inside of the windscreen 4.
- Figure 2 illustrates a second embodiment wherein the visor 2a is a standard visor to which a case 10 containing the sensor 6 may be fitted.
- the case 10 is in the shape of an inverted U between the arms 11, 12 of which the lower edge of the visor 2a may be pushed. If desired a spigot may be forced through the case to secure the case to the visor
- Expired breath which may contain alcoholic vapour can enter the case via apertures 5and be detector by the sensor 6, to provide an indicating signal that causes an audible or visible warning, by means of either the lamp 7 or the lamp 8 or both.
- Figure 3 illustrates schematically an electrical circuit associated with the detector 6.
- the detector is connected to a microprocessor which determines whether the signal from the sensor exceeds a threshold and if so provides various optional output signals that may be used to energise any one of a variety of alarms.
- the microprocessor obtains power from a power source 16 which may be a separate electrical battery but may be the main battery of the vehicle.
- the microprocessor provides signals for operating the visor light 7 and the windshield light 8.
- the system may include other external lights 21 and 22. These may be constituted by narrow strip lights extending around the number plates of the vehicle.
- the microprocessor may also cause the illumination of other lights that form part of the ordinary lighting system of the vehicle. Since these lights are generally quite powerful, for example in the range 5 - 21 watts, it is preferable for the microprocessor to operate a respective relay which can provide power from the vehicle's main electrical system to these lights. Thus for example the microprocessor 15 may operate a relay 17 which allows power either continuously or intermittently to the headlights 18. The microprocessor 15 may operate a relay 19 which allows power either continuously or intermittently to the side lights 20.
- Figure 4 illustrates the vehicle 1 and some of the feature previously described, particularly the visor 2, the visor light 7, the windshield 4, the windshield light 8, and the external light 21.
- FIG. 5 An alternative to the windshield light is a light extending at least partly around the periphery of a licence plate on either the front and the rear of the vehicle or both.
- an electrically illuminated strip 51 is disposed around the periphery of a licence plate 50.
- the strip 51 would be driven from the sensor 6 as previously described.
- Such a strip may be incorporated during manufacture or retrofitted.
