Abstract

The invention is designed to stop drivers, driving whilst over the legal limit of the land. This done by taking a sample of air and driver's exhausted breath automatically upon the driver entering the vehicle and preparing to start the engine. A door sensor and a driver's seat sensor are provided for this purpose. Upon sensing a driver a pump is energized to draw a sample of air from the vehicle into an alcohol analyzing chamber. If the tested sample is above the legal limit the engine is prevented from being started. <IMAGE>

Description

IN CAR DRUNK DRIVER ELIMINATOR (TYPE D1ODT) This device operates through a main control box 'Fig 2' and all relevant functions pass through this box.
The first function is activated when the car door is opened. The door censor alerts the control box 'Fig 2' which sets itself to a standby mode. When the driver seat sensor is activated by way of the drivers weight, the control box 'Fig 2' starts the electric flow through pump, thus taking air via the in car censor to the alcohol censor chamber to be analysed (all censors are shown in 'Fig 1' the alcohol chamber is shown in 'Fig 3').
If the alcohol content in the air in the chamber is below the prescribed limit, the control box will allow the electric current from the battery through to allow the vehicle to start in the normal way. If the alcohol content is too high, the control box will not allow current through this, imobilizing the vehicle.
When the alcohol analysing has been completed, the control box signals the exhaust at the end of the alcohol chamber to open, the control box also signals the electric fan to stop. If the driver remains on the seat the system will return to a non operation mode, it will not be re-activated until that particular driver moves off the driving seat. When returning to the non operative mode, the exhaust at the bottom of the alcohol chamber will be signaled to close by the control box. It is important that the exhaust closes after the electric fan stops so as to give the system a clean chamber ready for the next driver.
The system has two alarms both shown in 'Fig 1'. These are there to stop anybody misusing or taking away a part or parts of the system in order to by-pass it.
They both work on the principal of an uninterupted signal from the control box 'Fig 2', if this signal is interupted they are activated and a load tone is discharged from them both. The first alarm being in built to the control box, the second mounted on the frame of the vehicle close to the ignition switch, with a separate electrical feed from the ignition so that it can work independantly from the control box, thus making short circuiting the system very difficult without triggering one or both alarms.
The alarm tone will be of a distinctive nature unlike that of other alarms making it instantly recognisable to the general public.
On the control box 'Fig 2' there is an auxillery feed to a fuel cut off valve, this valve being of the in line type and would be used when the system is fitted to diesels and fuel injection engined vehicles. The function of this valve would be to stop the above mentioned engines from being push started.
If the driver moves or the pressure on the seat censor changes whilst the door is open, the system will fail safe and the start operation activated again. This is to stop others starting the vehicle for a over the limit driver. All censors are built with a constant pulse circuit relayed from the control box, so that they cannot be short circuited or removed. If this were to happen the system would fail safe and the alarms would sound.
There is also a delayed monitor in built into the control box.
This undertakes all the functions whilst the engine is running, except current flow or fuel cut off. This enables the engine to run freely but tests the driver on a 1 minute cycle so that the driver cannot drink at the wheel.

Claims (1)

  1. The aliminator comprises of a central control box, an overhead air intake mounted above the driver, a series of on/off switches placed on the driver door post, on the drivers door window slide, under the driver seat, on the sunroof or convertable roof if fitted to the vehicle and when diesel engines are fitted, at the fuel cut off switch.
