Abstract

 本発明は、環境負荷の大きい酸化ヒ素や酸化アンチモンの使用量が少なく、しかも残泡の少ないガラス組成物を提供する。このガラス組成物は、質量%で表示して、SiO2:40~70%,B2O3:5~20%,Al2O3:10~25%,MgO:0~5%(ただし5%を含まず),CaO:0~20%,SrO:0~20%,BaO:0~10%,Li2O:0~1.5%,Na2O:0~1.5%,K2O:0~1.5%,Cl:0~1.5%,を含み、Li2O、Na2OおよびK2Oの含有率の合計が0.05~1.5質量%であり、K2Oの含有率がNa2Oの含有率以上である。

ガラス組成物およびその製造方法
技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、ガラス組成物およびその製造方法に関し、特に、アルミノポロシリケート 系のガラス組成物とその製造方法に関する。
背景技術
[0002] ガラス組成物の製造過程において、ガラス組成物に泡などが残留しないようにする ことを、清澄するという。ガラス融液を清澄するために、清澄剤を添加する方法がごく 一般に知られている。清澄剤としては、酸化ヒ素、酸化アンチモン、フッ化物などが周 知である。しかし、これらの成分は環境負荷が高いため、その使用量の削減が社会 的な要請となっている。
[0003] 情報表示装置、特にアクティブマトリクス型の液晶表示装置 (LCD)の基板に用いら れるガラス組成物には、これまで無アルカリホウケィ酸ガラス組成物が用いられてきた 。無アルカリホウケィ酸ガラスの代表例としては、米国コーニング社のコード 7059が 挙げられる。ァノレミニゥム、ホウ素、ケィ素などの成分は、その電荷が大きいために、 静電的な束縛が強ぐガラス中で十分に移動しにくい。このため、一般に、無アルカリ ホウケィ酸ガラス組成物は粘性が高ぐガラスの清澄が容易ではなレ、。
[0004] これまで、酸化ヒ素に代表される、望ましくない清澄剤の使用を避けながら、液晶表 示装置の基板に用いるためのガラス組成物を製造する方法が種々検討されてきた。
[0005] 特開平 10-25132号公報には、無アルカリホウケィ酸ガラス組成物を得るためのガラ ス原料に、「清澄剤として、硫酸塩を SO換算で 0. 005〜: 1. 0重量%、及び塩化物

を C1換算で 0. 01 -2. 0重量%添カ卩する」ことが開示されている。この公報には、硫

酸塩としては BaSO 、 CaSO力 塩化物としては BaCl 、 CaClがそれぞれ開示され

[0006] 特開昭 60-141642号公報には、フォトマスクや液晶表示装置に用いるための低熱 膨張ガラスが開示されている。このガラスは、 5. 0質量%以上の MgOを含み、 5. 0 質量%以下のアルカリ金属酸化物を許容するアルミノポロシリケート系のガラスである 。特開昭 60-141642号公報には、低熱膨張ガラスの脱泡剤(清澄剤)として、 As O、

発明の開示
[0007] 環境負荷が高くない清澄剤として、特開平 10-25132号公報は BaClおよび CaCl
2 2 を開示し、特開昭 60-141642号公報は NaClを開示している。
[0008] しかし、発明者が検討したところによると、 BaCl、 CaClのようなアルカリ土類金属

の塩ィ匕物からは大きな清澄作用が得られなレ、。また、 NaClを清澄剤として用いて得 られた Naを多く含むガラス組成物を液晶表示装置のガラス基板として使用すると、ガ ラス基板から溶出する Naイオンが液晶素子の性能を損なう場合がある。
[0009] 本発明は、液晶表示装置などの情報表示装置に適した組成を有し、泡の少ないガ ラス組成物およびその製造方法の提供を目的とする。さらに、本発明は、このガラス 組成物を用いた情報表示装置用ガラス基板の提供を目的とする。

[0017] 微量のアルカリ金属酸化物の存在は、ガラスの清澄作用を大きく向上させる。また、 Kは、 Naよりもガラス組成物における移動速度が大きくなレ、。これを考慮して、本発 明によるガラス組成物では、微量のアルカリ金属酸化物を許容し、かつ 〇の含有 率を Na〇の含有率以上とし(第 1のガラス組成物)、あるいは微量の K〇を微量の C1 とともに添加することとした(第 2のガラス組成物)。さらに、本発明の製造方法では、 清澄効果に優れた KC1をガラス原料に添加することとした。
[0018] 本発明によれば、酸化ヒ素に代表される環境負荷の高い成分を、ごく限られた量の みを使用することにより、あるいは使用することなぐアルミノポロシリケート系のガラス 組成物において、十分な清澄効果を得ることができる。本発明は、環境負荷の高い 成分の使用を避けながら、高い歩留まりと低いコストにより、大型の情報表示装置用 ガラス基板を製造することを容易とするものである。

[0031] 本発明の第 1のガラス組成物では、 K Oの含有率が Na〇の含有率以上、好ましく は K Oの含有率が Na〇の含有率を上回る力 本発明の第 2のガラス組成物におい ても、 K Oの含有率と Na Oの含有率との関係は同様であってもよい。また、本発明 によるガラス組成物では、 K Oの含有率が Na Oの含有率と Li Oの含有率との合計 を超えていてもよい。本発明によるガラス組成物は、 Na〇および Li〇を実質的に含 まなくてもよい。
[0032] 本発明によるガラス組成物の製造方法では、ガラス原料の一部として、 KC1が添カロ される。上述した特開平 10-25132号公報で用いられていたアルカリ土類金属の塩化 物(BaCl、 CaCl )は、その沸点が高ぐさらにガラス中で自由に移動しにくいために 沸点を超えても急激な沸騰を起こしにくい。このため、アルカリ土類金属の塩化物か らは十分に高い清澄作用が得られなレ、。これに対し、 KC1は、一価の塩であるため、 熔融ガラス中での電気的な束縛が弱レ、。また、カリウムはナトリウムよりもイオン半径が 大きいため、熔融状態から冷却され、体積収縮して緻密な構造を有するに至ったガ ラス組成物中では、立体障害によってその移動の自由度は高くない。
[0033] 従って、 KC1は、高温で熔融状態にあるガラス中を自由に移動して、泡に入り込み 脱泡効果を発揮する一方、形成したガラス組成物からのアルカリ成分の溶出による 問題が生じにくい、という優れた特性を有する。また、 KC1の沸点は約 1510°Cであり 、 1413°Cの沸点を有する NaQよりも高温で揮発する。このため、アルミノポロシリケ ート系ガラスのように、粘度の高いガラスの清澄にとって、 KC1の使用は特に有利で ある。
[0034] また、減圧雰囲気下で脱泡を行う減圧清澄技術では、気密などのために複雑な構 造を持つ清澄槽を用いることになる。この場合、通常清澄が行われる温度(1600°C 以上)よりも低い温度(約 1450〜: 1500°C)で清澄することが好ましい。このため、ァ ルカリ土類の塩ィ匕物よりも電荷の束縛が小さぐ粘度の高い溶融ガラス中でも移動し やすレ、 KC1は、減圧清澄に特に有利である。
[0035] C1は、その揮発性のため、原料よりもガラスにおける含有率が低くなる傾向にある。
このため、原料における C1が微量であれば、原料に KC1のような C1源を用いたとして も、得られたガラス組成物からは C1が検出されない場合がある。
[0036] Li 0、 Na〇、 K〇などのアルカリ金属酸化物は、ガラスから溶出して他の部材に

影響を及ぼすため、液晶表示装置用ガラス基板としての用途では、これまでガラス組 成物から排除されてきた。しかし、アルカリ金属酸化物、特に κ οは、微量であれば、

ガラスからの溶出の影響を実際には問題にならない程度に抑制しながら、ガラスの清 澄作用を高める有用な成分である。アルカリ金属酸化物は、ガラス粘性を引き下げる とともに、原料の中で溶解しにくいシリカの溶解促進に寄与するためである。
[0037] ただし、原料に C1源を用いず、アルカリ金属酸化物の添加に頼って清澄を行う場合 には、ガラス組成物中の Κ〇の含有率が、 Na Oの含有率以上、好ましくは Na Oの
2 2 2 含有率を上回るように、調整しておく必要がある。ガラス中の移動速度が比較的大き レ、 Na〇の含有率を制限することにより、ガラスからのアルカリ金属の溶出を抑制する

ためである。
[0038] 好ましくは、本発明のガラス組成物は、 2種類以上のアルカリ金属酸化物を含有す る。 2種類以上のアルカリ金属酸化物力 ガラス組成物中で共存すると、混合アル力 リ効果によって、それらアルカリ金属イオンの移動速度を、さらに低減することができ る。それによつて、ガラス組成物からのアルカリ金属やアルカリ金属イオンの溶出をさ らに低減することができ、ガラス組成物の化学的耐久性を高める効果が得られる。本 発明のガラス組成物は、 K Oと、 Na Oおよび/または Li〇と、を含むことが好ましい [0039] 本発明によるガラス組成物の成形方法は、特に限定されないが、ダウンドロー法ま たはフュージョン法によることができる。
[0040] 以下、ガラス組成物の各成分について説明する。
[0041] (SiO )
SiOはガラスの骨格をなす必須成分であり、ガラスの化学的耐久性と耐熱性とを高 める効果を有する。その含有率が 40%未満であると、その効果が十分に得られない 。一方、含有率が 70%を超えると、ガラスが失透を起こしやすくなり、成形が困難にな るとともに、粘性が上昇してガラスの均質化が困難になる。したがって、 SiOの含有 率 ίま、 40〜70°/0であり、 58〜70ο/οカより好ましレヽ。
[0042] (Β〇 )
Β〇はガラスの粘性を引き下げて、ガラスの熔解および清澄を促進する必須成分 である。その含有率が 5%未満では、その効果が十分に得られない。一方、含有率が 20%を超えると、ガラスの耐酸性が低下するとともに、揮発が激しくなるためガラスの 均質化が困難になる。したがって、 Β〇の含有率は 5〜20%であり、 8〜: 13%がより 好ましい。
[0043] (Al Ο )
A1〇はガラスの骨格をなす必須成分であり、ガラスの化学的耐久性と耐熱性を高 める効果を有する。その含有率が 5%未満では、その効果が十分に得られない。一 方、含有率が 25%を超えると、ガラスの粘性が低下し、耐酸性が低下する。したがつ て、 A1〇の含有率は 10〜25%であり、 13〜20%力 Sより好ましレヽ。
[0044] (MgO、 Ca〇)
MgOと Ca〇は、ガラスの粘性を引き下げて、ガラスの熔解および清澄を促進する 任意成分である。その含有率がそれぞれ 10%、 20%を超えると、ガラスの化学的耐 久性が低下する。したがって、 Mg〇の含有率は 0〜: 10%とし、 CaOの含有率は 0〜 20%とする。
[0045] なお、 C1による清澄作用を高めるためには、 MgOと Ca〇は、それぞれ 1 %以上含 むことが好ましい。さらに、ガラスに失透が生じるのを防ぐには、それぞれ 5%、 10% 以下とすることが好ましレ、。したがって、 Mg〇と Ca〇は、それぞれ 1〜5%、 1〜: 10% であることがより好ましい。 MgOは 5%未満であることがさらに好ましい。
[0046] (SrO、 BaO)
SrOと BaOとは、ガラスの粘性を引き下げて、ガラスの熔解および清澄を促進する 任意成分である。その含有率がそれぞれ 20%、 10%を超えると、ガラスの化学的耐 久性が低下する。さらに、それらのイオン半径が大きいために、ガラス中のカリウムィ オン、塩ィ匕物イオンの移動を阻害し、ガラスの清澄を困難にする場合がある。したが つて、 SrOの含有率は、 0〜20%であり、好ましくは 0〜4%である。また、 Ba〇の含 有率は、 0〜: 10%であり、好ましくは 0〜: 1%である。

として気化し、ガラス中の泡の拡大浮上を促進させる。それとともに、その流動によつ てガラス融液を均質化させる効果を有する。 K oの含有率は、所定の条件を満たす

場合には 0%としてもよいが、 0. 05%以上とすることが好ましぐ 0. 07%以上とする ことがより好ましい。
[0049] 一方、 K Oはガラスの熱膨張係数を増加させる場合があるため、シリコン材料との

熱膨張率の差を生じさせないために、 K〇の含有率は 1. 5%以下にすることが望ま

しい。
[0050] K Oは、同じアルカリ金属酸化物である Na〇や Li Oと比べると、ガラス中での移動

速度が小さぐガラスからの溶出を起こしにくい。このため、 K〇は、アルカリ金属酸化

物の中では、液晶表示装置などの情報表示装置用ガラス基板に適した成分である。 ガラスからのアルカリ金属酸化物の溶出を抑制するため、 Na Oの含有率は K Oの含
2 2 有率以下にすることが望ましい。例えば、 Na Oの含有率は、 0〜: 1. 0%の範囲(ただ

し 1. 0%を含まず)とすることが望ましぐ 0〜0. 5%の範囲とすることが好ましぐ 0〜 0. 1。/0の範囲とすることがさらに好ましい。
[0051] Li Oは、ガラスの粘性を下げるとともに、ガラスの清澄を促進する任意の成分である

。 Li Oもまた、 K Oと同様に、塩化リチウムとして気化し、ガラス中の泡を拡大浮上さ せ、同時にガラス融液を均質化させる効果を有する。また、 Li Oを微量添加すること により、ガラス組成物の表面抵抗および体積抵抗あるいは電気抵抗を引き下げ、帯 電を防止することもできる。その添加量は 0〜0· 5%の範囲とすることが望ましぐ 0. 07%以下とすることが好ましい。
[0052] (C1)
C1は、含有率を 0%としてもよいが、ガラスの清澄を促進できる成分であるため、含 有率が 0. 04%以上であることが好ましい。上述したように、 C1は、その揮発性のため に、原料よりもガラスにおける含有率が低くなる傾向にあるため、例えばガラス原料バ ツチには、ガラス組成物における含有率が 0. 05%以上となるように C1を添加すること が好ましい。
[0053] しかし、 C1はガラスへの溶解度が高くないために、含有率が 1. 5%を超えると、成 形中のガラス内部で凝縮し、塩化物の結晶を含んだ泡を形成したり、ガラスの分相や 失透を起こしやすくしたりする場合がある。したがって、 C1の含有率は 1. 5%以下に することが望ましい。
[0054] Κ Οと C1は、別々の供給源を用いて添加することもできる。しかし、その絶対的な含 有量が少ないために、両者の結合はその他のイオンとの競争反応になる。その結果 、両者が十分に結合されない場合がある。
[0055] 一方、 Κ Ο源および C1源として、塩化カリウム(KC1)の形態で添カ卩した場合は、初 期の段階力も KC1として存在させることができる。このため、ガラスの温度が KC1の沸 点を超えたときに、急激な発泡を起こしやすぐ清澄に有利となる。したがって、 κ ο 源および C1源としては、 KC1を用いることが好ましい。
[0056] (混合アルカリ効果)
アルカリ金属酸化物の含有率の総禾口、例えば Li 0、 Na〇および K Οの含有率の 総和として表わされる R〇の含有率は 0. 05〜; L 5%の範囲、好ましくは 0. 07〜; L
5%の範囲(ただし、 0. 07%を含まず)とする。
[0057] し力、し、 Li 0、 Na Oおよび K〇は、アルカリ金属酸化物であるので、それらのカチ オンは、他の金属カチオンと比較して、ガラス中で移動しやすい傾向がある。
[0058] 上述のアルカリ金属酸化物のうち、ガラス中での移動速度が最も遅いのは Κ〇であ る力 ガラス組成物中に K Οと Li〇および/または Na Oとを共存させることによって
、ガラス組成物の化学的耐久性を高める効果が得られることは、上述したとおりである
[0059] さらに、複数のアルカリ金属酸化物を共存させることによって、 1種類のアルカリ金 属酸化物を含有する場合よりも、より優れた清澄効果を得ることができる。このより優 れた清澄効果は、 K Oと Li〇とが共存する場合に、特に顕著に現れる。
[0060] (その他の成分)
本発明によるガラス組成物は、実質的に、上述した成分(SiO, B O , Al〇, Mg
〇, Ca〇, Sr〇, Ba〇, Li〇, Na〇, K〇, CI)からなる組成物であってもよい。この 場合、本発明によるガラス組成物は、上述した成分以外の成分を実質的に含まない
[0061] ただし、本発明によるガラス組成物は、屈折率の制御、温度粘性特性の制御、失透 性の向上などを目的として、その他の成分をさらに含有していてもよい。その他の成 分としては、具体的には、 Y O、 La〇、 Ta〇、 Nb O、 GeO、 Ga Oを例示できる
。これらの成分は、その含有率の合計が 3%以下となるように含まれていることが好ま しい。
[0062] なお、産業上利用し得るガラス原料に微量不純物として含まれ、上述されていない 成分が混入する場合もある。この微量不純物としては、 Fe Oを例示できる。これら不 純物の合計含有率が 0. 5%未満の場合は、ガラス組成物の物性に及ぶ影響は小さ ぐ実質上問題とならない。
[0063] 本発明によるガラス組成物では、酸化ヒ素ゃ酸化アンチモンの使用量を削減しなが らも、良好なガラス清澄性を得ることができるが、本発明は、 Asや Sbなど環境負荷の 大きな成分を完全に排除する趣旨ではない。上述のとおり、本発明によるガラス組成 物は、 Asや Sbの酸化物を実質的に含まないことが好ましいが、これに限定するわけ ではなぐ Asに比べれば環境負荷が小さい Sbであれば、酸化物換算で 4%未満の 範囲で含ませることも可能である。

調合したバッチは、白金ルツボの中で熔融および清澄した。まず、このルツボを 16 00 Cに設定した電気炉で、 16時間保持してバッチを熔融した。その後、ガラス融液 の入ったルツボを炉外に取り出し、レ、つたん室温で放冷固化してガラス体を得た。こ のガラス体をルツボから取り出して徐冷操作を施した。徐冷操作は、このガラス体を 7 00°Cに設定した別の電気炉の中で 30分保持した後、その電気炉の電源を切り、室 温まで冷却することによって行なった。この徐冷操作を経たガラス体を試料ガラスとし た。
[0070] (ガラス組成の定量)
試料ガラスを粉砕し、蛍光 X線分析法 (理学電機工業製 RIX3001)により、ガラス 組成の定量を行った。なお、ホウ素 (B)については、発光分光分析法(島津製作所 製 ICPS— 1000IV)により定量を行った。
[0071] (清澄性の評価)
ガラス体の清澄性は、上述の試料ガラスを、倍率 40倍の光学顕微鏡で観察し、厚 さおよび視野面積と、観察された泡の数とから、ガラス lcm3当りの泡数を算出して評 価した。この方法はルツボを用いた簡易な熔解なので、算出した泡数は、実際に商 業規模で生産されるガラス体に含まれる泡数と比較して、非常に多くなる。しかし、こ の方法で算出した泡数が少ない程、商業規模で生産したガラス体に含まれる泡数も 少ないことが分かっている。したがって、この方法は、清澄性の指標として利用できる
[0072] (熱膨張係数およびガラス転移点の測定)
さらに、この試料ガラスに通常のガラス加工技術を用い、 φ 5mm、長さ 15mmの円 柱形状のガラス試片を作製した。このガラス試片に対して示差熱膨張計 (リガク製サ ーモフレックス TMA8140型)を用レ、、昇温速度 5°C/分で熱膨張係数およびガラ ス転移点を測定した。

上述のようにして作製した試料ガラスは、それぞれ表 3および表 4に示したような組 成を有していた。また、実施例 1〜: 15の試料ガラスに残存する泡の数は、比較例と比 較して非常に少なレ、。し力、も、実施例 1〜: 15の試料ガラスには、酸化ヒ素など環境負 荷が大きな清澄剤が添加されていなレ、。したがって、本発明のガラス組成物によると 、酸化ヒ素などを用いることなぐまたは酸化ヒ素などの使用量を低減しつつ、泡など の欠点の極めて少ないガラス基板を製造することができる。

比較例 1の試料ガラスは、表 4に示したような組成を有しており、 C1源として CaCl2を 用いて清澄した、 K Oを含まない、すなわち R Oを含まないガラス体である。比較例 1 では、残存する泡が多ぐ清澄性が悪いことがわかった。

比較例 2の試料ガラスは、表 4に示したような組成を有しており、 C1源として NaClを 用いて清澄した、 R Oを、 K Oの含有率が Na〇の含有率以上である関係を満たさ ずに含むガラス体である。この比較例 2では、残存泡を一定程度にまで減らすことが できるものの、ガラス中で拡散しやすレ、 Naイオンを一定量以上含むため、常温でも 徐々に Naイオンが表面から溶出する。このガラス組成物を、情報表示装置用ガラス 基板、例えば、液晶表示装置用ガラス基板として用いると、液晶素子を侵して性能を 劣化させるおそれがある、などの問題がある。
産業上の利用可能性
[0078] 本発明のガラス組成物は、耐薬品性や耐熱性、小さな熱膨張係数を要求される用 途ゃ、酸化ヒ素などの環境負荷の高い成分が忌避される用途に用いることができる。
