Abstract

The invention relates to a method of changing an anode of a cell for the production of aluminium by means of fused-salt electrolysis (2), said cell comprising a plurality of anodes (20, 20'). The inventive method comprises the following steps consisting in: (i) using at least one anode handling tool (13) comprising a positioning member (13b), a gripping member (13a) and a vertical position sensor for grip member and using said position sensor in order to measure the distances travelled vertically by the gripping member (13a) in relation to a reference level N; and (ii) producing at least one electromagnetic or sound wave beam (51) in an axis or a determined reference plane (50) and using the passage of the anode through said beam in order to measure the aforementioned distances. The method also consists in determining the vertical position of the replacement anode in the cell from the values obtained for said distances and placing the replacement anode in said position in the location initially occupied by the used anode (20').
