- the present invention relates to a toroidal choke coil, comprising a base, a ferromagnetic core, winding wires around the core, and protrusions of the base, the winding wire having its ends fastened thereto.
- the winding wire 4' coiled around the protrusion 5' has its section 4b 1 constituting a soldering spot, at which the choke coil is joined by means of a solder 10 to its mounting, such as a circuit board.
- Drawbacks in such a design include the fact that the tail end of a wire may disengage from or slip off the slot 6' with no proper fastening therebetween. This may compromise planarity and thereby add to the soldering problem. Disengagement is possible, especially before the choke coil is fitted (soldered) in place.
- the solder between a mounting and the soldering spot 4b' of the winding wire 4 shall inevitably have a small surface area, which may lead to a failure of solder and contact breakdowns.
- each protrusion is encircled by at least two laps of winding wire, which, at least over a section of their extent, provide soldering surfaces for the choke coil, and that each protrusion has a groove in which the winding wire has its end fastened by a press fit.

- the rim stiffeners 2a conform preferably to the outer rim's radius of curvature and have their edges, at least over a portion of their extent, rising obliquely upward from the bottom element of the base 2.

- the number of protrusions may be other than this.
- the protrusions 5 are arranged circumferentially along the rim of the base 2 at 90-degree intervals and extend somewhat away from the base rim.
- the winding wires 4 have the tin-plated tail ends thereof wound around the protrusions 5, such that the protrusion 5 is encircled by at least two complete laps of winding wire.
- the sections 4b of the winding wires 4, placed along a bottom surface of the protrusions 5, constitute soldering surfaces (four of those) for the choke coil 1, whereby the choke coil 1 is connected to an appliance by soldering the same, for example to a circuit board of the appliance.
- Reference numeral 12 represents copper-plated pads of a circuit board (not shown), to which the soldering surfaces 4b are to be soldered.
- the protrusions 5 have bottom surfaces thereof provided with a bottom groove 7.
- a molten material, such as tin, intended for providing a solder joint, will be permitted to rise to the bottom groove 7 and consequently to surround completely the section 4b of the winding wire 4.
- each protrusion 5 has its end provided with a groove 6.
- the groove 6 is preferably orthogonally transverse with respect to the plane of a bottom element and wedge-like tapered in its lengthwise direction (vertical direction of the choke coil).
- the tapered configuration enables the ends of the winding wires 4 to be fastened with a press fit to the protrusions 5, no other mechanisms being needed for securing the wire 4.
- one of the protrusions 5 has its end, alongside the tapered groove, preferably formed with an extra protrusion 5a, a lip or the like, which is used for polarizing the choke coil 1. In other words, it can be used for ensuring, for example by the application of computer vision, a correct position of the choke coil 1 before and/or after mounting the choke coil 1 in place.
- the four discrete soldering surfaces 4b present themselves in planes which are undesirably different from each other. This may cause problems in the process of soldering the choke coil 1 to the circuit board (motherboard) of an appliance.
- the soldering surfaces 4b of the choke coil 1 shall be made coincidental in terms of their planarities. This is accomplished for example by means of a device shown in fig. 3. It comprises a preferably horizontal stationary a flat panel 9, which is provided with a recess or cavity 9a for accommodating the choke coil 1, the protrusions and the tail sections of a winding wire coiled therearound finding themselves outside the recess or cavity 9a.
- the choke coil 1 bears against the flat panel 9 adjacent to the edge of the recess 9a.
- the choke coil 1 has its soldering surfaces 4b facing upward.
- the protrusions 5 and thereby the soldering surfaces 4b are pressed concurrently, as indicated by arrows shown in fig. 3, with a flat press member 8.
- the flat surface of a press element 8a forces the soldering surfaces 4b to set in a mutually common plane.
