The tensioning structure 30 may also be fitted so that the frame 3 may be tilted in a clock- wise direction, as viewed in Figure 2, to a third condition, where the second leg 6 is in a horizontal position and the first leg 5 is in a vertical position, in order that the flow channels 9 of the stack 50 adopt a substantially vertical configuration.

As can be seen from Figure 9, the compressive force results in induced radial force being applied to the stack. The stack 50 may then be lifted from the stripping frame and transferred on to supports 34, as shown in Figure 8, for seasoning or, alternatively, transferred directly onto a kiln trolley. In order to accommodate expansion and contraction pressures during drying, the tensioning structure 30 preferably includes a series of springs 35 coupled to the bands 31 as illustrated in Figure 10. • the kiln may also include louvres 58 which act as inlets for introducing fresh air and/or humidity control.
  • the vertical flow channels 9 within the stack 50 allow for substantially uniform drying of the timber pieces, since the natural convection direction for hot air within the kiln is up toward the vent 55. Accordingly, it is expected that kiln drying utilising vertically orientated flow channels will provide a faster and more uniform drying of timber pieces as compared to a conventional stack of timber pieces with flow channels arranged in a horizontal direction. Further, it is anticipated that the timber pieces in the stack will be able to be dried relatively quickly in a pre-kiln drying process, where the stack is left in an outdoor environment, due to the vertical orientation of the airflow passages, for similar reasons, as compared to a conventional stack with horizontal flow passages, where circulation between adjacent rows of timber pieces would be minimal. In addition, the use of a tensioning structure, as described above, is expected to provide superior results for the overall drying process since it provides active resistance to the timber pieces warping, bowing or twisting, which may otherwise result if only a conventional weight restraint were used.
  • Figure 14 illustrates an alternative kiln 51, where like reference numerals are used to denote like parts.
  • the kiln 51 of Figure 14 is of generally the same construction as that shown in Figure 13 except the airflow is reversed, with hot air being forced by fan 59 through an inlet 60.
  • the reversed air flow is preferred since any moisture extracted from the stack 50 is more readily removed in a gravitational direction.
