Definitions
- This invention relates to a device to stop or alleviate the consequences of teeth clenching due to stress or other reasons; it also relates to a treatment based on electrical microstimulation; lastly, it relates to the a ⁇ t ⁇ iinistration of drugs and other substances through permeable slow-release capsules.
- a number of solutions are currently available to alleviate and control these disorders, such as drugs, psychotherapy, physiotherapy and the use of mouth guards (splints and/or appliances), designed to attenuate or decondition the neuromuscular receptors and, consequently, reduce teeth clenching and other consequences of stress.
- This invention relates to a device, which may also be called a universal stress reduction mouthpiece, or mouthpiece for short, which remedies the above inconveniences, while at the same time allowing broader application.
- the preferred embodiment of the mouthpiece is preferably made of silicone and consists of a single element, or a number of assembled components; a view from the top of the device features two outer rectangles with preferably rounded comers, connected by a band, preferably made of silicone and of suitable width, length and thickness; a fin of suitable width projects at right angles from each of the two rectangular elements.
- the mouthpiece is fitted between the dental arches so that the band is positioned in the vestibular fornix and the two fins interposed between the jaws.
- Figure 1 shows a top view of the mouthpiece.
- Figure 2 shows a view of the part of the mouthpiece facing towards the inside of the mouth.
- Figure 3 shows a side view of the mouthpiece.
- Figure 4 shows a view of the part facing towards the inside of the mouth of an alternative embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 5 shows a top view of the alternative embodiment shown in figure 4.
- Figure 6 shows a side view of the alternative embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5).
- Figure 7 shows the preferred embodiment (Figs. 1,2,3) in use.
- Figure 8 shows the alternative embodiment (Figs. 4,5,6) in use.
- the mouthpiece is prefarably made of silicone (or a similar material) and is of the appropriate thickness to ensure enhanced flexibility, so as to easily adapt to the curve made by the dental arches, and at the same time of the right consistency to act as a sort of damper (with a shock- absorbing function), when interposed between the jaws;
- the mouthpiece comprises two elements (1,2), the thickness of which keeps the perioral muscles of the cheeks at a distance and at the same time allows the stable introduction of the perpendicular fins 4,5, which are large enough to be contained in the posterior lateral vestibule, these elements (1 and 2) are united by a band (3); integral with and projecting at right angles from the elements (1 and 2) there are two fins (4 and 5), whose consistency and thickness may vary according to the patient's needs.
- the use of this mouthpiece is extremely simple and is shown in figure 7. The first step is to introduce it into the mouth between the two jaws, obviously adapting it to the
- FIG. 4 An alternative embodiment of the invention is shown in figures 4, 5 and 6. It is composed of two elements (1,2) with upper rounded edges thick enough to keep the perioral muscles of the cheeks at a distance, while at the same time ensuring a certain stability for the perpendicular fins (4 and 5). These elements (1 and 2) are large enough to be contained in the posterior lateral vestibule and they are united by a band (3). As mentioned previously, integral with and projecting at right angles from the elements (1 and 2) there are two fins (4 and 5), whose consistency and thickness may vary according to the patient's needs.
- the functions of the elements (1,2) is: to balance the perioral muscles, support the two posterior lateral fins, hold and stabilize both the lateral fins and the entire mouthpiece.
- the fins (4 and 5) provide an interocclusal surface for the postero-lateral teeth; increase the vertical interocclusal dimension; deprogram the neuromuscular receptors; prevent the clenching and/or grinding of the teeth; relax the cranio-facial muscles; rebalance the muscle tone of the occlusal-cervical rachidian areas; lessen the tension, headaches and neck pain.
- the mouthpiece made in silicone or other similar material
- its dimensions can easily be modified and adapted by cutting the distal extremities of the two interocclusal fins; it is also possible to make embodiments featuring scored areas to facilitate the task of adapting the size of the mouthpiece.
- Further improvements to the preferred embodiment can be obtained by introducing electrical or electromagnetic microcircuits in the lateral vestibular elements, for either personal use, supplying power to the circuit by means of a battery, or professional use, connecting it with a control unit that can change, modulate and monitor the stimuli, also according to a dedicated software running on a computer.
- the mouthpiece by suitably modifying the fins it can be possible to symmetrically introduce - in the two posterior areas - small containers, similar to permeable capsules or perforated sachets, containing, for example, medicinal and other substances to anatagonize pain or the craving for cigarettes, also by increasing the production of saliva; for these purposes the mouthpiece can also be made of an edible substance, which gradually melts away in the mouth, either entirely or partially.
- this mouthpiece remedies the inconveniences featured by the currently available devices, also performing a function of neuromuscular receptor deprogramming, to alleviate and correct mandibular-postural, cervical and occlusal disorders, cephalgias, headaches, spinal problems, postural disorders, trigger points, with the added advantage of mass production, this mouthpieces, in fact, no longer needs to be custom-made like the traditional ones; it also has the advantage of being disposable, with a programmed and programmable duration, and of being structured, if necessary, in such a way as to be adapted and balanced by the dentist.
