Definitions
- the invention relates to an airbag module with a module housing, an air bag folded in the module housing, a holder connected with the module housing, whereby the air bag fabric or web is clamped between the holder and the module housing and is thereby secured, and with a cylindrical gas generator secured on the module housing exteriorly thereof, the gas generator having a radially projecting out-flow crown that extends though the housing wall, the airbag web, and the holder into the interior of the airbag.
- the module housing of this airbag module comprises, in its base region, a concave flare extending into the housing interior whose curvature is correspondingly configured with respect to the form of the gas generator, so that the gas generator that is retained on the module housing exteriorly thereof extends with a portion of its outer circumference into the concave flare.
- the gas generator extends, with a radially projecting out-flow crown, through the respective wall of the module housing on which the gas generator is mounted, the airbag web, and the holder, so that, in the event of an airbag deployment, the air produced from the gas generator is conducted via the out-flow crown into the interior of the folded airbag.
- a retaining plate is provided for retaining the gas generator on the outer side of the module housing, the retaining plate having a form that extends over the gas generator around its free circumference, being correspondingly configured with respect to the form of the gas generator, and comprising an encircling flange for bolt connections at several locations with the module housing.
- the disadvantage is associated with the known airbag module that the deployed retaining plate for retaining the gas generator is rendered as an expensive component whose configuration is correspondingly configured with respect to the contour of the deployed gas generator; moreover, the arrangement of the bolt connections at several locations requires a corresponding arrangement of studs or, respectively, threaded bores, as well as a corresponding assembly effort.
- the solution to this challenge is comprised in the advantageous configurations and embodiments of the invention forming the subject matter of the patent claims which follow this description.
- the invention provides, in its basic concept, that, for the securement of the gas generator on the module housing, two retaining elements are provided that engage the axial end sides of the gas generator and are connected with the module housing and/or the holder.
- the advantage is associated with the invention that the retaining elements that engage the end sides of the gas generator and, preferably, that engage its end caps, typically do not need to be correspondingly configured to the form of the gas generator and, consequently, can be produced as standard components and can be deployed with different gas generator configurations. Since the gas generator is only secured on its end sides to the module housing, the number of securement locations on the module housing is reduced. Also, the gas generator can be mounted at various locations relative to or, respectively, on, the module housing, so long as the module housing comprises corresponding recesses for connecting the retaining elements that retain the gas generator on the module housing.
- the retaining elements are comprised of clamp bands that encircle the end caps of the gas generator around their circumferences, the ends of the clamp bands being used for securement of the bands, whereby the ends of the respective clamp bands are either directly secured to the module housing or, as well, are secured to the associated retaining element.
- the invention provides that the retaining elements are comprised of securement members which, on the one hand, are secured to the axial end sides of the gas generator and, on the other hand, are connectable with the module housing.
- the securement members are fixedly mounted on the end sides of the gas generator before the mounting of the gas generator on the module housing and are connectable on their free ends with the module housing.
- At least one of the two securement members as integral components of the module housing so that the gas generator can be correspondingly configured to be accommodated by this fixed location securement member and can subsequently be secured in place by means of a second securement member.
- the securement members are configured as angle pieces with a shank for connection to the gas generator and a shank for connection to the module housing.
- a holder is provided for securement of the airbag web in the interior of the module housing, with the holder being connected with the module housing by means of corresponding securement means, it is provided, in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, that the means for securing the holder to the module housing also serve to secure the retaining elements that retain the gas generator on the module housing.
- the securement members can, in particular when configured in an L- shaped configuration, be connected in various ways with the end sides of the end caps of the gas generator via shanks oriented for this purpose by means of, for example, press fitting, glueing, or another suitable connection methods. Furthermore, in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, it can be provided that the securement members are integrally formed components of the end caps of the gas generator.
- the standardized configuration of the securement members makes it possible, in corresponding embodiments of the invention, to provide securement members with a cable pass-through outfitted with corresponding protection, a plug arrangement outfitted with corresponding protection, or a ground connection.
- the securement members can be comprised of plastic or light metal and can be produced via various production variations such as, for example, via press processes or injection molding processes.
- both securement members are rendered as components of the module housing and the module housing is configured in two parts that are to be connected to one another upon assembly of the airbag module.

- FIG 4 the airbag module as shown in Figure 1 , in a modified embodiment
- Figure 6 the subject matter of Figure 4 in a rear view
- Figures 7-15 respective schematic illustrations of various arrangements of the module housing in the gas generator secured thereon.
- the base plate 10 of an otherwise conventionally configured module housing can be recognized, whereby a portion of the web of the airbag 11 is disposed on the base plate 10 and a holder 12 is disposed in the interior of the airbag, the holder cooperating with the base plate 10 to clamp the airbag web therebetween and, thereby, fixedly securing the airbag 11 in the module housing; typically, the airbag 11 is disposed in a folded condition in the not further illustrated module housing.
- a cylindrical tubular gas generator 14 is mounted on the outer side of the module housing and, as seen in the illustration in Figure 1 , the gas generator is, in fact, mounted on the underside of the base plate 10, the gas generator 14 having a radially projecting out-flow crown 15 that extends through the base plate 10 via a recess 13 oriented for such purpose and, as the occasion arises, extending through the air bag web of the airbag 11 and the holder 12 until reaching the interior of the folded airbag, whereby, at the region of the out-flow crown 15 extending into the airbag 11 , an out-flow opening 16 is provided.
- the base plate 10 comprises, in the receipt region of the tubular gas generator 14, a concave flare configured in correspondence with the gas generator so that the gas generator 14 is received in a shape-conforming manner in the concave flare of the base plate 10.
- the gas generator 14 is disposed in a fixed manner on the base plate
- each securement member in the illustrated embodiment, being L-shaped with a shank
- the shank 19 of the securement member 18 encircles the flange-type end cap 17 in a form-fitting manner about its outer circumference so that the securement member 18 preferably fits on the end cap 17 in a press-fit manner.
- a clamp securement can be provided.
- the securement members 18 can be individually provided with cable pass-throughs having corresponding protective possibilities, as well as, in addition, plug connections or ground connections.
- each respective securement member 18 lies parallel to the base plate 10 of the module housing and is so arranged that the bolts that are otherwise provided for securing the holder 12 on the base plate 10 of the module housing also extend through the second shank 20 of the securement members 18, whereupon the thread connection 23 assumes, in a unitary manner, the connection of the holder 12, the base plate 10, and the securement member 18.
- FIG. 4-6 differs from the heretofore described embodiment solely in that, for securement of the gas generator 14 on the base plate 10 of the module housing, clamp bands are provided on both ends of the gas generator, the clamp bands encircling the end side end caps 17 of the gas generator around their circumferences and, with their free ends, being guided through the base plate 10 of the module housing until reaching the holder 12. Hook configurations 25 are configured on the holder 12, on whose ends the clamp bands 24 are suspended and are thereby secured. In this manner, a certain securement of the gas generator to the module housing is realized in a simple manner.
