Abstract
Wooden construction element (1, 2) of a window (3) or door, where the element (1, 2) comprises a unitary projection, which forms a stop face (4).
Description
A wooden construction element and a process for the manufacture thereof.
The present invention relates to a wooden construction element of a window or door.
Windows and doors should preferably provide a thermal insulation and sound proofing between the two sides of the window or door, typically between the outside and a room in a building. To achieve this, windows and doors normally comprise an abutment edge and often also a weather strip.
Prior art wooden construction elements for win- dows or doors typically comprise a separate list attached to the construction element. Such a design, however, increases the cost of the element, as it is relatively labour consuming to attach such an extra list, and further there is a risk that the list is misaligned and that there is a gap between the list and the construction element, which gap will allow ingress of water into the gap, which will increase the risk of rot in the construction.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a wooden construction element, which can be manufactured at a favourable price.
To fulfil this object the element comprises a unitary projection, which forms a stop face.
According to an embodiment the element is part of a window or door frame.
According to an alternative or supplementary embodiment the element is part of a window sash.
Another aspect of the invention relates to a window comprising a frame and a sash, characterized in that at least one of the frame and sash comprises a wooden construction element having a unitary projection, which forms a stop face.
The invention further relates to a method for
manufacture of a wooden window or door element, characterized in the steps o'f providing a plurality of standard staves having the same dimensions, joining the staves by gluing or the like to form a basic element, machining the basic element to a desired shape. According to an embodiment the machining step comprises removing part of the basic element, e.g. by milling, thereby providing a stop face.
In the following the invention will be described in detail by way of example with reference to the drawing, *in which
Fig. 1 is a schematic view of a centre-hung window,
Fig. 2 is a cross section of a wooden basic element,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view and cross section of a wooden construction element according to the in- vention,
Fig. 4 is a cross section of a prior art wooden construction element,
Fig. 5 is a schematic cross section of a window frame and sash, and Fig. 6 is a schematic cross section of a window frame and sash.
The centre-hung window in Fig. 1 comprises a frame 7 and a pivotable sash 8. This type of window construction is common in roof windows and normally the frame 7 and sash 8 is of wooden construction. The frame 7 and sash 8 is made up of wooden elements, so in the common event of a quadrangular window the frame 7 and sash 8 is each made up of four elements to form a quadrangle. In Fig. 2 is seen a cross section of a wooden basic element 6 made up of three standard staves having the same dimensions, which staves preferably are joined by gluing to form the basic element 6. By mak-
ing the basic element 6 of staves, it is possible to use wood staves having visual defects on one or more sides, and thereby it is possible to use wood that would otherwise be discarded, although it is struc- turally suited for the purpose as part of a window construction.
This basic element 6 can be machined, e.g. by milling to a desired shape, as can be seen in Fig. 3. The machining process removes a part of the basic element 6, whereby a stop face 4 or a similar projection is formed. Further the machining removes part of another surface to produce a bevel face 13, which is visually pleasing and allows slightly more light through the opening of the window. A typical prior art wooden construction element 10 can be seen in Fig. 4. This element is made up of a number of differently shaped elements, which must be assembled with great care. Handle of the large number of different elements increases the expenses associated with the manufacture of the construction element. A separate list 11 may be attached to provide a stop face 12. This construction, however, entails the risk that there is a gap between the list and the element . Further understanding of the invention can be achieved by studying Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, which both present a section of a sash and a frame having wooden construction elements 1, 2, respectively, where the sash 1 carries a pane 13. The sections of Fig. 5 and 6 are taken below and above the pivot hinge, and in the figures the window is shown in a slightly open position. In Fig. 5 the sash comprises a weather strip 9, which may be fitted in a recess or slot in the construction element 1. When the window is closed, the weather strip 9 comes into abutment with the stop face 4. In the section of Fig. 6, the weather strip 9 is attached to the frame element 2, whereas the stop face 4 is provided at the sash ele-
ent 1, and in the closed position of the window, the weather strip 9 abuts on the stop face 4.
It should be noted that by staves is meant any oblong articles, such as staves, slats, sticks or the like .
