Definitions
- the invention relates to a shaving head according to the introductory portion of claim 1.
- a shaving apparatus having such a shaving head is known from European patent 0 652 086.
- the annular wall portion of this known shaving head is provided with a 5 large number of lamellae extending in substantially radial directions, which lamellae separate the hair-entry apertures. These apertures provide a visible shaving area of the shaving head. Since the cutters have cutting edges which follow an annular path adjoining the hair-entry apertures, hairs extending inwardly through the hair-entry apertures can be cut off through cooperation of the cutting edges with edges of the apertures.
- the cutters are carried by a single cutter carrier structure in mutually fixed positions.
- shaving heads comprising a plurality of cutter carrier structures operative along coaxial paths which are independently movable in axial direction, as known from U.S. patent 2 632 948, the shaving head can be constructed with a relatively small number of moving parts, resulting in a relatively simple, durable, and low-cost shaving head.
- the invention may be embodied in a shaving apparatus comprising one or several such shaving heads.
- the annular wall portion Since the inner annular boundary of the annular wall portion is in an axially different position from the peripheral annular boundary of the annular wall portion, the annular wall portion is relatively rigid. Therefore, contact pressure exerted on the cap of the shaving head causes relatively little deformation of the annular wall portion. Accordingly, the formation of gaps between the cutting edges and the annular wall portion due to deformation of the annular wall portion is substantially reduced. In turn, this results in a substantial reduction of the negative influence on the shaving performance and comfort, which is caused by such gaps in that hairs are pulled by the cutting edges instead of being cut off cleanly.
- the annular wall portion is preferably as thin as possible for clean shaving and as thick as possible for quick shaving.
- the increased rigidity obtained by the axially different locations of the inner and the peripheral annular boundaries of the annular wall portion allows to make a different design trade-off between thickness, size of the shaving area, and rigidity of the cap.
- hair-entry apertures may be provided which extend over a relatively long radial distance and/or a relatively wide annular path along which the cutting edges are operative may be provided without entailing the formation of unduly large gaps under the influence of axial loads exerted on the shaving head.
- Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line I-I in Fig. 2 of a shaving head according to the invention with, schematically shown, cutters and drive system;
- Fig. 2 is a plan view of a the shaving head of Fig. 1;
- Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of section Q of Fig. 2;
- Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a first alternative embodiment
- Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a second alternative embodiment
- Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a third alternative embodiment.
- Fig. 7 is a perspective view of an example of a shaving apparatus comprising three shaving heads according to the invention.
- Figs. 1 and 2 show part of a shaving head of a shaving apparatus shown in Fig. 6.
- the shaving head comprises a cap 1, having an annular wall portion 2 in a projecting position for contacting the skin of the user. Hair-entry apertures 3 in the form of slits in the annular wall portion 2 extend in radial directions.
- the radially extending slits may be oriented radially, as in the present example, or be oriented with a directional component in tangential direction, for example by being oriented obliquely to the radial direction or curved in tangential direction.
- the shaving head 25 is provided with a single cutter carrier structure 13 which can be rotated relative to the cap 1 by a motor 14 and a transmission 15.
- the cutter carrier structure 13 is rotatable about a rotation axis R.
- the cutter carrier structure 13 is schematically shown.
- the cutter carrier structure 13 is coupled via a transmission 15 to a motor 14, and resilient members 27 are furthermore provided for axially urging the cutting crown 13 against the annular wall portion 2.
- the cutter carrier structure 13 carries a plurality of cutters 7 circumferentially distributed about the axis R.
- the cutters 7 and the cutter carrier structure 13 are integrally formed from a single piece of material and constitute a stable and rigid cutting crown.
- the cutters 7 each have a cutting edge 8.
- the cutting edges are operative along an annular path 16 adjoining the hair-entry apertures 3, as indicated by dashed lines in Fig. 1. Since the cutting crown 13 is an essentially rigid structure, the cutters 7 and the cutting edges 8 have fixed positions relative to each other.
- the cutting crown may also include secondary cutters and cutting edges, which are moveable relative to the primary, mutually fixed cutting edges 8 for providing dual- and triple-action shaving effects.
- the secondary cutters are usually each independently movable relative to the primary cutters and independently and resiliently urged towards the annular wall 2 of the cap 1.
- the annular wall portion 2 has an inner annular boundary 9 in an axially different position from a peripheral annular boundary 12 thereof. Due to this feature, the rigidity of the cap against axial deformation is substantially increased.
- the inner annular boundary 9 can be located inwardly from the peripheral annular boundary 12 of the annular wall portion, it is preferred for providing an effective and evenly distributed skin contact that the inner annular boundary 9 is located axially outwardly from the peripheral annular boundary 12.
- the annular wall portion 2 has a continuous slope in one axial direction with respect to a plane P perpendicular to the axis R.
- the annular wall portion 2 extends substantially along a conical plane having a central axis coaxial with the axis of rotation R.
- the annular wall portion 2 has an average tangent line T enclosing an angle ⁇ with the plane P extending perpendicularly to the axis of rotation R.
- the angle ⁇ is preferably at least 5 degrees, more preferably about 9 to 11 degrees. At such an angle, the annular wall portion 2 has a large rigidity to withstand inwardly directed forces like a contact pressure acted thereon and a relatively even distribution of the contact pressure upon the annular wall portion 2 during use.
- the cap 1 comprises a central wall portion 5 being surrounded by the radially inner boundary 9 of the annular wall portion 2.
- the central wall portion 5 is situated axially inward relative to the inner boundary 9 of the annular wall portion 2.
- Hair-entry apertures 3a forming an inner circle of apertures extend through the inner edge 9 of the annular wall portion 2.
- hair-entry apertures 3b forming an outer circle of apertures coaxial with the inner circle of apertures extend through the outer edge 12 of the annular wall portion 2.
- This configuration facilitates manufacturing of the cap 1.
- the annular wall portion 2 of the external cap 1 comprises an annular reinforcement 4 between the inner and peripheral annular boundaries 9, 12 thereof.
- the annular reinforcement 4 of the annular wall portion 2 provides the external cap 2 with extra rigidity to resist unevenly distributed forces acting thereon; more specifically, tilting of the central portion 5 of the cap 1 relative to the outer boundary 12 of the annular wall portion 2 and an associated deformation of the annular wall portion 2 is reduced by a counteracting tangential deflection of the lamellae between the slits in the annular wall portion 2.
- the radially extending slits 3 are arranged in coaxial annular slit patterns 3a, 3b of different diameter, the reinforcement being formed by an annular zone between and coaxial with the coaxial annular slit patterns 3a, 3b, the tangential deflections are counteracted particularly effectively. Due to the location of the an annular zone 4 between the coaxial annular slit patterns 3a, 3b substantially in the middle between the inner and outer boundaries 9, 12 of the annular wall portion 2, the deflection-reducing effect of the annular reinforcement is evenly distributed between the inner and the outer lamellae, which is also favorable for the overall effectiveness of the reinforcement.
- the caps 1 can be manufactured at low cost.
- the annular path 16 of the cutting edges 8 of the cutters 7 adjoins both the inner and the outer apertures 3a, 3b.
- An inner circumference C of the annular wall portion 2 preferably has a diameter smaller than about 14 mm, more preferably smaller than about 13 mm. Furthermore, an outer circumference D of the annular wall portion 2 preferably has a diameter of at least 18 mm, more preferably at least about 20 mm. The outer diameter of the annular wall portion is generally preferably smaller than 21 to 23 mm for allowing multi-shaving head shavers to adapt themselves effectively to different facial curvatures by adjusting the mutual orientation of the shaving heads.
- the annular path of the cutting edges 8 preferably has a width W, measured from an inner to an outer circumference of the path, in the range of about 1.5 to 3 mm, and more preferably in the range of about 2 to 3 mm.
- the radial distance L between the inner and outer circumferences C, D of the annular wall portion 2 is about 3.8 to 4.5 mm, for example about 4.1 mm.
- the hair-entry apertures can extend over a long distance in substantially radial direction between the inner and outer edges 9, 12 of the annular wall portion 2, thus providing an advantageously large visible shaving area.
- the cutting edges 8 of the cutters 7 can be arranged to provide a relatively large effective shaving area.
- the annular wall portion 2 has an outwardly directed arcuate shape. If the annular wall portion 2 has an outer surface with a center of curvature on the axis R, finishing of the outer surface of the annular wall portion 2 is facilitated because, during finishing, the cap can be suspended on a support which is pivotable about a point on the axis R.
- the inner surface of the annular wall portion 2 has a center of curvature on the axis of rotation R and the cutting edges each have the same center of curvature. This facilitates finishing of the outer surface of the cutting edges because, during finishing, the cutting crown can be suspended on a support which is pivotable about a point on the axis of rotation R.
- a second alternative embodiment is shown, having an annular wall portion 2 which comprises two parts 10, 11 separated by the reinforcement ring 4, wherein each part 10 ,11 has an outwardly directed arcuate shape.
- the arcuate shape results in hairs being cut relatively close to the skin while improving the shaving sensation.
- Each of the arcuate portions may have one radius or several radii of curvature.
- the radially situated inner and outer hair-entry apertures 3a, 3b lie in separate rows separated by a ring-shaped section 4 of the annular wall portion 2.
- neighboring inner and outer apertures, 3a, 3b overlap each other, viewed in a radial cross-section.
- the annular wall portion may be provided with a large number of hair-entry apertures 3, for example at least 60, preferably at least 80 inner apertures 3a and at least 80, preferably at least 100 outer apertures 3b.
- the annular wall portion 2 has inner and peripheral annular zones 17, 18 having a greater wall thickness than the wall thickness of annular zones between the inner and peripheral annular zones 17, 18.
- the annular zones having increased wall thickness are located close to the paths of the ends of the cutting edges 8 where hairs may be engaged only partially by the cutting edges. Partial engagement of a hair by a cutting edges can cause the hair to be cut only partially while the cutting edge entrains the non-severed hair. The resulting pulling force exerted on the hair causes discomfort for the user.
- the annular wall portion 2 is thicker in a zone adjacent the paths of the ends of the cutting edges 8, the likelihood of hairs being engaged in that zone is reduced.
- the stiffening of the annular wall portion 2 resulting from the thickened annular zones allows the other zones to be made thinner. This effect is particularly marked if, as in the present example, the annular wall portion 2 has an annular zone including the reinforcements 4, which has a greater wall thickness than neighboring annular zones of the annular wall portion 2.
