- This invention relates to holographic and corrosion retardant security device for packaging of metallic articles/parts/components and the process of manufacturing the same.
- the combination of holographic and corrosion retardant security device for packaging of metallic articles/parts/components are not known in the prior art and have been developed first time.
- the main object of this invention is to provide holographic and corrosion retardant security device which can not be manufactured easily and thus are not available for replacement by any person other than the manufacturer and thereby provide brand protection and corrosion protection.
- the brand protection is provided in terms of holographic film forming the outer layer and the inner layer of the composite film provides the corrosion protection.
- the said security device is made available in the form of composite film/bag/pouch and similar forms in sizes as desired for the application and it is made convenient to use for packaging.
- holograms on the package is through manual or automatic machines. These holograms, are, however, small in size and the application is to be done as a subsequent process.
- VCI bags anti-corrosive Vapour Corrosion Inhibitor bags.
- VCI bags are either mainly made of direct extruded polyethylene or co-extruded films. Metal parts put in these bags are protected against corrosion by VCI technology. In some cases, these bags are plain anti-corrosive bags while in some other cases they are printed. These bags are made from either Polyethylene, PVC, PP or PET. Corrosion protection and brand protection today are thus done in 2 separate steps.
- the said security device for packaging of metallic articles / parts / components with corrosion retardant properties is made available in the form of composite film/bag/pouch and similar forms in sizes as desired for the application.
- the said security device is made in a way convenient to use for packaging of metallic articles/parts/components.
- the said security device provides protection of brand from counterfeits.
- the said security device also provides protection to multiple metallic articles/parts/components like steel, copper, aluminum, silver, zinc etc, incorporating the unique chemistry of corrosion protection in terms of being nitrite free and non-toxic.
- the said security device combines the VCI technology with holographic technology to make holographic anti-corrosive composite easily convertible in forms like film/bags/pouches giving a clear advantage of convenience in packaging of metallic articles/parts/components, which provides the end-user of these forms -a unique advantage of corrosion protection combined with brand protection and additionally would also provide the customer with productivity benefits, as it would save a complete process of subsequent application of any security label.
- the application details involves packing of the metallic articles/parts/components to be protected from counterfeits and effects of corrosion inside the prefabricated composite made available in the form of film/bags/pouches etc and sealing the open end using conventional heat sealing process.
- the manufacture of the said security device consists of first producing the intermediates like Holographic Film (1), Adhesive (2 & 6) and Plastic film with VCI (3 & 5) which are then combined through a process as detailed hereafter to get the required device.
- the device so made is then converted to desired forms like film/bag/pouch etc. as required for the needs of packaging considering the form, weight and geometry of the metallic articles/parts/components to be packed.
- the manufacturing of holographic film is done from the base polymeric film readily available from market.
- the base film taken can be in varying thickness range from 8 microns to 200 microns of polymers like polyester and polypropylene or PVC ranging from 50 microns to 1000 microns.
- These films are vacuum metallised and then embossed using a transfer image using the conventional holographic process and in the width desired for further processing keeping in mind the size and form required for end use.
- the care is also taken to adjust the surface treatment to ensure a good bonding between the said holographic film to the adhesive to be used later in the process for lamination.
- the adhesive used for bonding again depends upon the end use as regards the temperature of storage, transit conditions etc.
- the adhesive base is prepared from polymers like aliphatic, aromatic polyurethane, polyester and polyol using conventional cross-linking agents, to give either a room temperature cure, heat activated cure, with or without a post cure at elevated temperature as required for the end use.
- the various constituents are mixed in required proportions, suitably solvated using aliphatic/aromatic ketones, acetates and / or hydrocarbons and used within the usable life earlier determined for different compositions varying from 2 hours to 14 hours.
- the mixing is done using conventional mixing equipments for a duration, determined earlier, for different compositions keeping in mind the viscosities of the ingredients to obtain a uniformly distribution and thorough mixing of the ingredients.
- Plastic film with VCI is done by blending the conventional thermoplastic polymers commercially available based on, polyethylene, polyvinyl etc with the appropriate dosage of VCI chemicals and fillers. Appropriate amounts and type of colourants, readily and commercially available, are also added to get the required colour for ease
- VCI chemicals are suitably selected to get a nitrite free chemistry, to avoid toxic hazards of nitrite chemistry.
- contact corrosion inhibitors are also used in the blend. The blend is then subjected to an extruder for obtaining the plastic VCI film of desired thickness and dimensions keeping in mind the size and form required for end use.
- the thickness can range from 25 microns to 600 microns and the film can be either mono-layer as obtained through a mono-extrusion process or co-extruded as obtained through a co- extrusion process resulting in to film with two or more layers of same or different polymer layers and in different thicknesses of individual layers.
- the final composite film (A) is then ⁇ cleTived by depositing the adhesive as obtained above once on the holographic film with depositions of adhesive varying from 1 gram per square meter to 10 grams per square meter, as evaluated and validated to obtain the desired level of bonding and in line with the surface treatment levels provided earlier in the process of manufacturing the holographic film.
- the adhesive deposition is done by using conventional coating/printing machines followed by lamination of the plastic film with VCI (3) with or without printing as required in line with the end use. This is followed by on-line drying/curing using conventional drying / curing equipments.
- the composite (B) is then similarly made by depositing the adhesive as obtained above on the plastic film (8) and based on the polymers readily available from market. These films taken can be in varying thickness range from 8 microns to 200 microns for polymers like polyester and polypropylene or PVC ranging from 50 microns to 1000 microns.
- the adhesive depositions vary from 1 gram per square meter to 10 grams per square meter, as evaluated and validated to obtain the desired level of bonding and in line with the surface treatment levels provided earlier in the process of manufacturing the holographic film.
- the adhesive deposition is done by using conventional coating/printing machines followed by lamination of the plastic film with VCI (3) with or without printing as required in line with the end use. This is followed by on-line drying/curing using conventional drying / curing equipments.
- the final composite bag/pouch is then derived by sealing the (A) and (B) at selected portions (9) by using conventional sealing equipments based on heat sealing / thermal welding to get the desired levels of bond strengths.
- Figure 1 shows a cross section (across the thickness) of composite film of the said security device.
- Figure 2 shows a cross section (across the thickness) of the composite bag/pouch of the said security device
- the holographic film (1) can be made either of polyester/polypropylene in thickness varying from 8 microns to 200 microns or PVC ranging from 15 microns to 1000 microns.
- the holograms are embossed holograms metalised to the extent as required by the customer.
- the plastic film (3) can be either varying in thickness from 25 microns to 600 microns.
- This film can either be mono-extruded or co-extruded film with thickness varying from 25 microns to 250 microns.
