Abstract

The present invention is generally directed to systems and methods to provide a user with visibility to packages that are inbound to and outbound from the user. A preferred embodiment describes a subscription system that allows the user to determine the frequency and format of package visibility information, and various tools are disclosed to automate and customize the presentation of package visibility information to the user.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 06 August 2003 (06.08.03); original claims 1-10 amended; remaining claims unchanged (2 pages)]
1. A package tracking system to notify a user about packages that are in transit in a carrier system to a consignee location associated with said user, said packages being shipped from one or more identified shippers, said package tracking system comprising: a user interface to allow said user to associate a unique location identifier with said consignee location; and a visibility engine in electronic communication with one or more carrier databases to receive shipping data about a plurality of packages that are in transit in a carrier system, each of said plurality of packages having an associated shipping record that is stored in said one or more carrier databases, wherein at least one of said plurality of packages is shipped from said one or more identified shippers and is in transit to said consignee location; and wherein said shipping record associated with said at least one package in transit to said consignee location includes a shipping address and said unique location identifier; and wherein further said visibility engine is configured to identify said at least one package in transit to said consignee location using said unique location identifier and is additionally configured to notify said user that said at least one package is inbound to said consignee location.
2. The package tracking system of Claim 1, wherein said visibility engine is additionally configured to estimate a time of arrival for said at least one package and to notify said user of said estimate.
3. The package tracking system of Claim 1, wherein said user interface is configured to allow said user to enter a list of shippers that are authorized to use said unique location identifier.
4. The package tracking system of Claim 3, wherein said visibility engine is configured to provide said list of shippers with said unique location identifier.

5. The package tracking system of Claim 1, further comprising a shipper interface to allow said one or more identified shippers to obtain said unique location identifier.
6. A method of package tracking that allows a user to receive information about packages that are inbound to a consignee location from one or more shippers, said method comprising the steps of: associating a unique location identifier with said consignee address; capturing a shipping record for each of a plurality of packages, said plurality of packages including at least one package sent to said consignee from said one or more shippers, wherein said shipping record that is associated with said at least one package includes an address of said consignee location and said unique location identifier; identifying said at least one package as inbound to said consignee location using said unique location identifier; and notifying said user of said at least one inbound packages.
7. The method of Claim 6, further comprising the steps of: estimating a delivery time for each of said at least one inbound packages; and notifying said user of said at least one estimated delivery time.
8. The method of Claim 7, further comprising the step of notifying said user of any change in said at least one estimated delivery time.
9. The method of Claim 6, wherein the step of notifying said user comprises providing said user with access to a database that has shipping information about said at least one inbound package.
10. The method of Claim 6, wherein the step of notifying said user comprises electronically providing said user with a file that has shipping information about said at least one inbound package.
