Abstract

A method for sequential closed circuit desalination of a salt water solution by reverse osmosis and an apparatus with at least one circuit that comprises: a container means; one or more desalination modules; lines for conducting the solution from the container to the desalination modules and for recycling desalinated solution from the modules to the container; a circulation means for driving the recycling of the solutions; a pressurizing means for creating sufficient counter pressure to enable reverse osmosis desalination and replacement of released permeate by fresh salt water feed; means for effluent discharge and salt water recharge; means for monitoring the progress of desalination and control means that enable the desalination process to be performed in sequences with either variable pressure or constant pressure applied such that the ratio of applied pressure to osmotic pressure at each stage during the process is maintained above a minimum predetermined value.
