Definitions
- the chain drive, timing belt drive and cardan shaft drive systems used on motorcycles are widely known. As far as standard motorcycles for circulation on roads and racing motorcycles are concerned, the chain drive is the most common driving system.
- the chain drives generally used at present consist of a single, closed-ring chain (Figure 1); the transmission of motion from the gearbox pinion (1) to the rear wheel hub crown (3) takes place by means of a steel chain (4) comprising a series of links connected in such a way as to form a single ring.
- the closed-ring chain slides outside the axis of the swinging arm (5) of the rear driving wheel.
- Other drive systems are known, for example timing belt or cardan shaft drive systems, which however are not yet used for racing motorcycles.
- the engine delivers all its power through the drive chain, thus shifting all the weight (and consequently the centre of gravity of the vehicle) backwards: at the same time, however, the weight rests on the shock absorber (9) of the swinging arm (5), which after the compression tends to return to its original position.
- the rider opens the throttle, the motorcycle tends to pitch and is immediately subjected to the recoil due to the upward movement of the swinging arm (5) that tends to raise the rear wheel (8) from the asphalt: the wheel does not adhere perfectly to the road surface and skids.
- the rider instinctively closes the throttle, which may cause the front part of the vehicle to skid, while the rider runs the risk of falling down or of being catapulted off the saddle.
- a new chain drive system which comprises two independent chain rings with intermediate double- pinion transmission element and makes it possible to change the position of the engine and the frame, allowing the engine to be lowered with consequent lowering of the weight and of the centre of gravity, thanks to which manoeuvring the vehicle in curves becomes much easier. Furthermore, thanks to the use of this system the position (attitude) of the engine is not binding and the engine can also be installed with a lower centre of gravity with respect to the engines installed at present ( Figure 3).
- the lowering of the engine increases the stability of the motorcycle considerably, and the resulting configuration permits also the lowering of the saddle, thanks to which the rider can face the beginning and the end of curves with no need to resort to very difficult manoeuvres.
- the invention is a drive system provided with two chain rings (6/7) (instead of one ring only), wherein the transmission of power to the wheel takes place indirectly, through the two chains (6/7) instead of through one chain only.
- Motion is transmitted from the gearbox pinion (1), Figure 2, to a double pinion (2) by means of a small, closed ring chain (6) (it is smaller if compared to traditional chain drives); the double pinion (2) housed in the end of the swinging arm (5) transmits motion to another chain (7) by means of an idle bearing, said chain (7) being positioned besides the small ring chain (6) and connected to the crown (3) of the rear wheel (8) hub.
- both chains may be constantly tensioned with no slack at all, which does not happen in the chains presently installed on motorcycles.
- the new drive system can be applied either to motorcycles used for circulation on roads and to racing motorcycles and partially solves the problem represented by the lack of stability of the vehicle at the end of curves and after abrupt accelerations and brakings.
- Another aim of the invention is the implementation of a system that should allow manufacturers to vary the position of the centre of gravity of the engine.
- a further goal is that the motorcycle should have a more correct attitude, which results also in reduced wear of the tyre treads.
- the chain drive system with two rings, as well as the pinions may have different sizes and shapes.
- a variant may comprise one or more series of chains positioned in two rows in front of the second drive chain.
- Another variant with bigger chains having a particular shape may feature a single ring between the gearbox pinion and the end of the swinging arm.
- Figure 1 is a complete side view of the traditional drive system used at present.
- Figure 2 is a view of the invention with double ring chain and shows the whole drive system, from the gearbox pinion to the crown of the rear wheel.
- Figure 3 is a view of the new drive system with the gearbox pinion in a lower position with respect to the centre of gravity of the swinging arm.
- Figure 4 is an axonometric view of the invention shown in Figures 2/3.
- Figure 1 shows the model with single chain used at present, while Figure 2 shows the invention comprising two chain rings (6,7) with a double idle pinion (2) installed on the axis of the swinging arm (5).
- the dimensions and gear ratios may vary depending on the model and on the intended use of the motorcycle on which the new drive system is to be installed.
- the dimensions of the drive system vary according to the wheel base of the vehicle.
- the measures indicated are not binding for the implementation of the invention, in fact they may vary depending on the frame model to which the new drive system must be applied.
- the new chain drive system with two independent rings and intermediate double-pinion transmission element comprises a double pinion (2) with a suitable bearing, to which the two chains (6) and (7) are connected to permit the transmission of power from the gearbox to the rear wheel crown.
- the pinion is positioned on the axis of the swinging arm tube (5) and connected by means of a roller bearing or an idle bearing, thus permitting the transmission of power from the gearbox pinion (1) to the crown (3) of the rear wheel (8) hub.
- Figure 3 shows a further, more convenient position of the engine and of the gearbox (represented by the pinion (1)), which is lower with respect to its traditional position.
- the double-chain drive system makes it possible to lower the engine and therefore the centre of gravity of the motorcycle, thus increasing the safety, stability and manoeuvrability of the vehicle and allowing the rider to handle the vehicle more comfortably in curves.
