Description

Biologically Active Dietary Supplement and Method of its Preparation
The invention relates to biologically active dietary supplements on the basis of raw plant, namely, to dietary supplement on the basis of apricot, particularly, on the basis of Prunus armemaca L., and method of its preparation.
Armenia is known to be the motherland of apricot. From the earliest times apricot was used in traditional Armenian medicine as means of cleaning organism from recrements.
Apricot is used in traditional medicine of India and China. Thus, Unani medicine utilizes apricot as antidiarrhoeic, antipyretic, antiemetic, antihelmintic means, at biliary diseases, piles, earache, deafness [Kirtikar K.R., Basu B.D., Indian Medicinal Plants. Nol.II, M/S Periodical Experts, New Delhi, 1988, p.957], as analgesic and resolvent [Nagamoto N, Noguchi H., Nanba K., Nakamura H., zuno M., Shoyakugaku Zasshi 42, 81].
In modern medicine apricot is used as dietary foodstuff - in fresh (puree), dry (dried apricots) and preserved (compote) form,
Apricot and its dry stuff contain high amount of potassium and iron, which are necessary in ration of pregnants and anaemic patients.
Dry stuff of apricot shows diuretic effect. It improves cerebral functioning, improves memory and working capacity, enlarges cerebral vessels. It is prescribed to patients with heart beat disorders, blood circulation deficiency, as well as to those who are treated with diuretics and cardiac glycosides in infarction, myasthenia, etc. Daily dose of lOOg dry stuff provides stool regulation [A.D.Tourova, E.N.Sapojnikova - Medicinal herbs of USSR and their use. Moscow. Medicine, 1982. pp. 249-250].
Linolenic acid in apricot oil and fruit shows antimutagenic effect, that can be used in prophylaxis of cancer [Yamamoto, Kazuko; Osaki, Yoshiko; Kato, Tetsuta; Miyazaki, Toshio Antimutagenic substances in the Armeniacae semen and Persicae semen Yakugaku Zasshi (1992), 112(12), 934-9].
Fresh fruits of apricot are not subject to long preserving and are not convenient for transportation, and nutritious and medicinal-preventive qualities of dry and preserved stuff from apricot are noticeably inferior to fresh apricot. Preservation and long term drying (usually at high temperatures) causes oxidation of iron ions and a number of organic constituents of apricot. Besides, dry and hard stuff has a restricted sphere of application, since infants and old people, who have problems with chewing, are not able to use them.
Biologically active dietary supplements are used together with pharmaceutical preparations or without them, for regulation of organism functioning, as well as for treatment and prophylaxis of various diseases. Thus, a biologically active dietary supplement in powder form from raw plant is described, that has nutritious and bio-regulatory effect [RU Patent No. 2099978].
However, until now apricot was not used as a raw material for obtaining biologically active supplements.
The aim of the present invention is to extend the raw base of biologically active dietary supplement from plant and to obtain a supplement from apricot, suitable for long preserving, transportation and use, that, in addition, preserves the flavour of a fresh fruit and valuable nutritious and medicinal-preventive qualities of plants.
Biologically active dietary supplement according to the present invention is a dehydrated powder, obtained from puree of fresh apricots.
The powder may be also a composition, obtained from a mixture of puree of fresh apricots and puree of other fruits (sea-buckthorn, hawthorn, hips, etc.) or extracts (liquorice, etc.) of other medicinal herbs, that also have the bio-regulatory and medicinal-preventive effect. The fruits, extracts and herbs cited herein are serving as an example and do not in any way limit the scope of invention.
A method of preparation of biologically active dietary supplement from raw plant material is known, according to which the raw plant is dried, reduced to fine particles and lyopliilised, then powdered and pressed to obtain tablets [RU Patent No. 2110194],
Biologically active dietary supplement according to present invention is obtained from apricot, particularly from Prunus armemaca L. or from a mixture of apricot and other medicinal herbs. The processing steps are following:
• puree is obtained from fresh apricots by known methods,
• apricot puree is lyophilised at approximately -20°C. When preparing a composition, purees of other fruits or herbal extracts, obtained by well-known technologies, are added to the basic puree. It is also possible to dehydrate the apricot puree by spray drying at approximately 120°C. • the obtained powder is homogenised by mixing and dispensed by tabletting, encapsulating or packing into containers.
As an option of processing, the purees of different ingredients of the composition are dehydrated separately. The obtained powders are then mixed and dispensed.
Example 1
About 4 1 puree was obtained from 10 kg of fresh apricot by known methods. Apricot puree was frozen in lyophilising system LZ45 to approximately -20°C, then the pressure in the system was reduced by a vacuum generated system. The water vapours were evaporated from frozen stuff under low pressure. The obtained 1 kg of air dry powder was homogenised by mixing and dispensed by tabletting in KILIAN apparatus. As a result 2 000 of 0,5g tablets were obtained.
Example 2
About 3,6 1 of apricot and 0,4 1 of hawthorn puree was obtained respectively from 9 kg of fresh apricot fruit and 1,2 kg of hawthorn by known methods. Purees were mixed, then frozen by lyophilising system LZ45 to approximately -20°C, then the pressure in the system was reduced by a vacuum generated system. The obtained 1 kg of powder was homogenised by mixing and dispensed by tabletting in KILIAN apparatus. As a result 2000 of 0,5g tablets were obtained.
Example 3
About 4 1 of apricot puree and 0,8 1 of liquorice spissum were obtained respectively from 10 kg of fresh apricot fruit and 2 kg of liquorice. The mixture was frozen by lyophilising system LZ45 to approximately -20°C, then the pressure in the system was reduced by a vacuum generated system. The obtained 1,2 kg of powder was homogenised by mixing and dispensed by tabletting. As a result 2400 of 0,5g tablets were obtained.
